Mauritius

Indian Ocean, east of Madagascar No US nonstop: via Dubai or Paris Passport + online arrival form

Mauritius is the Indian Ocean island for people who get restless on a sunbed. A coral reef rings most of the coast, so the beaches face calm lagoons. Inland, the island rises to forested gorges, waterfalls and volcanic peaks. You can swim in the morning and hike Le Morne in the afternoon.

It is also busier and better value than its neighbors. Statistics Mauritius counted 1,436,250 tourist arrivals in 2025 (provisional), and visitors from the whole of the Americas made up only 31,104 of them. On our test dates, the cheapest 3-star room in Grand Baie was $60 in January and $79 in July, taxes in. The cost is the journey: there is no nonstop flight from the US.

Weather month by month

Best months by our weather score: May, October, November. Daytime highs, rain and sunshine are 2016–2025 averages at Sir Seewoosagur Ramgoolam International Airport (Open-Meteo historical weather archive); sea temperatures are 2022–2025 averages for the nearest sea area (Open-Meteo marine archive). Months marked in the storm row fall in the Southwest Indian Ocean cyclone season (November 15 to April 30); the score takes that risk into account.

Where Mauritius ranks

Who Mauritius suits, and who should skip it

Mauritius fits couples who want a resort with real excursions, and families who want calm water and a rental car. It sits between the Maldives, where the resort is the trip, and Zanzibar, which is cheaper and rougher around the edges.

Skip it if you want empty, wild beaches: the Seychelles do that better. Skip it in late summer if a cyclone warning would ruin a short trip. And if you plan to bring a dog, read the rules below first.

Where to stay: north, west or east

  • Grand Baie and the north (Pereybère, Trou aux Biches, Mont Choisy). The most restaurants, bars and boat trips, and the cheapest rooms. On Kayak, the cheapest double rated 3 stars or better was Grand Bay Suites at $60 on Wednesday, January 13, 2027, and Esprit Libre Restaurant and Guest House at $79 on Wednesday, July 14, 2027, taxes and fees included.
  • Flic en Flac and the west. Sheltered from the trade winds, with sunsets over the water and quick access to Black River Gorges and Le Morne.
  • Belle Mare and the east. Long beaches and big resorts, breezier in the winter months, and the departure point for Île aux Cerfs.

Beaches: lagoon water, with caveats

The reef does the work. Inside it, the water at Trou aux Biches, Mont Choisy and Flic en Flac is usually shallow and calm, good for children. Le Morne has a wide lagoon that draws kitesurfers when the wind is up. Belle Mare on the east coast is long and pale but takes the trade winds.

The caveats: some stretches have coral rubble or seagrass underfoot, so pack reef shoes, and on resort-lined coasts the public access paths can be few and far between. Where the reef has a gap, as along parts of the south coast, waves reach the shore and swimming is not safe.

Things to do beyond the beach

  • Le Morne Brabant, the mountain at the southwest tip, a UNESCO World Heritage site with a steep guided or self-led hike and a view over the lagoon.
  • Black River Gorges National Park: forest trails, viewpoints and waterfalls in the southwest highlands.
  • Chamarel, for the multicolored earth formation and the waterfall nearby.
  • Grand Bassin (Ganga Talao), the crater lake that is the island's most important Hindu pilgrimage site.
  • Port Louis: the central market, the waterfront and Aapravasi Ghat, a UNESCO site on the history of indentured labor.
  • Boat days to Île aux Cerfs off the east coast, plus diving, snorkeling and catamaran trips from Grand Baie.

That is a full week, which puts Mauritius level with Zanzibar at the top of the Indian Ocean on our things-to-do scale.

When to go, and cyclone season

Mauritius Meteorological Services describes two seasons: a warm, humid summer from November to April and a cooler, dry winter from June to September, with May and October as transition months. Most rain falls in summer, and summer is when tropical cyclones form in the southwest Indian Ocean; the service has already published its storm names for the 2026-2027 cyclone season.

The practical reading: September to November and May give you dry weather outside the cyclone months. The Seychelles Meteorological Authority puts the peak of the southwest Indian Ocean season in January. Winter is still beach weather on the sheltered west and north coasts. Our cyclone season guide lines this up against other regions.

Getting there from the US, and entry rules

No US airport flies nonstop to Sir Seewoosagur Ramgoolam International (MRU). The common connections are Dubai on Emirates, Paris on Air France or Air Mauritius, Istanbul on Turkish Airlines, London-Gatwick on British Airways or Air Mauritius, and Johannesburg on South African Airways, Airlink or FlySafair.

The US State Department says Americans need no visa for 60 days or less, a passport valid for the length of the stay with a blank page, proof of onward travel and funds, and the Mauritius All-in-One Travel Digital Form, completed within 72 hours before arrival. A yellow fever certificate is required only if you come from, or transit more than 12 hours through, a country with yellow fever risk. Since June 6, 2026, Mauritius also bars foreigners who were in the Democratic Republic of Congo, Uganda or South Sudan within 21 days. More in our passport guide.

Bringing a dog, and what a trip costs

A dog is possible but takes planning. The USDA's export certificate for Mauritius requires an import permit from the Division of Veterinary Services, six months of US residence, a rabies vaccine and a rabies antibody test of at least 0.5 IU/ml taken one to six months before export, Ehrlichia and Brucella tests within 45 days, and core vaccinations. Only spayed or non-pregnant females and neutered males qualify, and pit bull types, Japanese Tosa, Dogo Argentino, Fila Brasileiro and Boerboel are banned.

For the trip itself, our two test nights in Grand Baie came to $60 in January and $79 in July for the cheapest qualifying room. Resorts on the east and west coasts cost several times that. Budget for a rental car or drivers: the sights are spread across the island, and the gorges, Chamarel and Le Morne are a full day from the north coast. Tours and boat trips are priced by operators, so compare a few before you book; the lagoon and the public beaches, of course, cost nothing at all.
