The best islands to visit with kids

Ranked for young children 64 islands scored #1: Crete, 8.2/10

This ranking answers one question: where do young children get calm, shallow water, short days of travel and a hotel that works for a family? We started from all 64 islands on the site and kept only the ones whose own page names kids as a real fit. Then we ordered them by the same overall score every island carries.

The winner is Crete, at 8.2 out of 10, and it wins despite the longest trip on the list. No airline flies nonstop from the US, so its access score is only 3.6. Everything else carries it: a 9 for beaches, a 9.5 for things to do and hotel rooms in Chania from $59 in January. If you want a shorter flight, the next two, Barbados and Antigua, are a few hours from the East Coast and almost tied.

At a glance

Best overall
Crete (8.2): shallow lagoons, family resorts and a week of sights, but no US nonstop
Best short flight
Barbados (8.1): nonstops from 8 US airports and flat west-coast bays
Best without a passport
Oahu (7.9) and St. Thomas (7.8)
Best for toddlers' water
Aruba: Baby Beach is a shallow, enclosed lagoon
Priciest on the list
Grand Cayman: $337 a night on Seven Mile Beach in mid-January
Not on the list
Maui and Puerto Rico: high scores, but our pages do not rate them for young kids

Crete

8.2/10
Things to do 9.5 Beaches 9.0 Passport needed

Crete is first because no other kid-friendly island combines a 9 for beaches, a 9.5 for things to do and a value score of 8.6. Elafonisi, in the far southwest, is a shallow lagoon children can wade across to an islet, though it is packed at midday in summer. Older kids get Knossos and the boat to Spinalonga. Rooms in Chania started at $59 on January 13 and $112 on July 14, 2027. The catch is the trip: you fly via Athens, and the island is 162 miles (260 km) long, so pick one half and rent a car.

Barbados

8.1/10
Weather 9.5 Beaches 8.5 Passport needed

Barbados is a close second on weather (9.5) and access: nonstops come from 8 US airports, and the south coast hotels are near the airport. On the west coast, Mullins Bay and Paynes Bay are usually flat, and Miami Beach at Enterprise has a calm side for small children. It loses ground on crowds, with more than 700,000 stay-over visitors in 2025, and on January prices: $140 on the south coast against $92 in July. Keep children off the east coast at Bathsheba, where rip currents make swimming dangerous.

Antigua

8.0/10
Weather 9.5 Beaches 9.0 Passport needed

Antigua's 9 for beaches is the reason it ranks third. The leeward west and southwest coasts are calm, and Pigeon Point near English Harbour is small, sheltered and shallow. Dickenson Bay has gentle water and beach bars. Five US airports fly nonstop, though JetBlue's JFK flight is listed as ending October 31, 2026. What holds it back is a 7 for things to do and the price of sand: a town room was $99 in January, but the cheapest beach-area room was $222. Bring a passport book with 180 days of validity; passport cards are not accepted.

Value 10.0 Room to breathe 10.0 Passport needed

Fiji ties Antigua at 8.0 thanks to two perfect scores: value (10) and room to breathe (10). Nadi rooms were $31 and $39 on our dates, but those are transit hotels. The calm lagoons and kids' clubs are on the Mamanuca islands, a boat ride from Denarau, and those resorts cost much more. Fiji Airways flies nonstop from Los Angeles, San Francisco and Honolulu, so there is no connection from the West Coast. Avoid January and February: the 2026-27 cyclone outlook is above average. June, July and September score best in our data.

Oahu

7.9/10
Weather 9.7 Things to do 9.0 No passport

Oahu has the strongest weather score here (9.7) and no passport requirement, with nonstops from 28 US airports. For small children, Waikiki's gentle surf, the protected swimming area at Ala Moana Beach Park and the man-made lagoons at Ko Olina all work. Waikiki also had the cheapest rooms in Hawaii: $139 on January 13 and $169 on July 14, 2027. Crowds pull it down (3.9), since Oahu drew more than 5.6 million air visitors in 2025. In winter, keep children out of the water on the North Shore, where the surf is lethal.

The white sand crescent and calm blue water of Magens Bay on St. Thomas, seen from the green hillside above6
Weather 9.2 Access 8.8 No passport

St. Thomas is the easiest no-passport Caribbean island on this list: 16 US airports fly nonstop, and the cheapest 3-star room was $93 on both of our dates. Magens Bay is a deep, sheltered horseshoe with calm, shallow water, and Coki Beach sits next to Coral World Ocean Park. A 6.5 for things to do keeps it mid-table, and its crowd score is not counted because no reliable island-only visitor figure exists. Cruise days fill Magens Bay, so check the port calendar. Only mineral sunscreen is legal in the USVI.

Aruba

7.6/10
Weather 9.8 Beaches 9.0 Passport needed

Aruba has the best weather score on the list (9.8) and a 9 for beaches. Palm Beach has the shallowest water on the hotel strip, and Baby Beach near San Nicolas is an enclosed lagoon that suits toddlers. It also sits south of the main hurricane track: only two hurricane centers passed within 50 nautical miles since 1950. It drops to seventh on price and crowds. The cheapest 3-star room near Eagle and Palm Beach was $203 in January, and 1.5 million stay-over visitors share 69 square miles. Everyone 8 and over pays a $20 fee through the online ED card.

Mallorca

7.6/10
Things to do 9.0 Weather 8.2 Passport needed

Mallorca scores 9 for things to do, the highest here after Crete: Palma's old town, the wooden Sóller train ($44.90 (€40) round trip with the tram) and the Tramuntana villages. For small children, Playa de Muro and the bay of Alcúdia are long, shallow and sandy. United flies seasonally from Newark, starting March 28, 2027. Crowds sink it (3.8): Mallorca had more than 13.5 million tourists in 2025. Rooms in Palma were $68 in January and $135 in July, and many north-coast resorts close for winter.

Calm turquoise water along the white sand of Seven Mile Beach on Grand Cayman, with sun loungers in the foreground9
Access 10.0 Weather 9.4 Passport needed

Grand Cayman has a perfect access score, with nonstops from 20 US airports including Los Angeles, and a Level 1 US travel advisory. Seven Mile Beach is usually calm right in front of the hotels, and Starfish Point has knee-deep water where children can see starfish. Stingray City works for every age. Value is what pulls it down to ninth: the cheapest 3-star-rated room on Seven Mile Beach was $337 on January 13, the highest January price on this list, and $217 in July. Condos with kitchens help a family budget.

Naxos Town's white houses and hilltop castle seen from Palatia islet, with the stone causeway and harbour in front10

Naxos

7.4/10
Beaches 8.5 Weather 8.0 Passport needed

Naxos earns its place with an 8.5 for beaches. Agios Georgios, on the edge of Naxos Town, is a shallow, sheltered bay where children can wade far out, and the west coast continues in sandy bays to Plaka. Rooms in town were $91 in January and $122 in July. Access is its weakness (3.6): fly to Athens, then take a short flight or a ferry of about 3.5 to 5.5 hours. The summer north wind can roughen the exposed bays, and many hotels close from November to April.

How this ranking was made

Every island gets six factor scores: weather (20%), beaches (25%), things to do (25%), getting there from the US (10%), value (10%) and room to breathe (10%). Weather, access, value and crowds are computed from data; beaches and things to do are editors' scores with the reason written on each island page. An island whose page verdict is "it depends" gives up 0.4 points. For this page we filtered to islands tagged for young children and kept the top 10. The full method is on how we score islands.

Which island fits your family

  • You want the shortest, simplest trip: pick Barbados, Antigua or Aruba. All three have US nonstops and calm beaches a short drive from the airport.
  • You want no passport: pick Oahu or St. Thomas. Children under 18 do not need ID at TSA for domestic flights, but on the way home from St. Thomas you clear a federal citizenship check, so carry passports or birth certificates for everyone.
  • You want a summer-holiday trip: Crete, Mallorca and Naxos are at their best from July to September in our weather data, when the Caribbean is in hurricane season.
  • You want calm water with no planning at all: Grand Cayman, if the budget allows. Its Seven Mile Beach is flat most days and the drives are short.
  • You have a week and a car: Crete. Its family resort strips at Platanias and Agia Marina near Chania, and Hersonissos east of Heraklion, make easy bases.

Why some family favorites are not here

Maui scores 8.1 overall, but our Maui page does not tag it for young children: it is car-dependent, the cheapest Kihei hotel was $296 in January, and Makena's Big Beach has a shorebreak that injures swimmers. It ranks on our family trip ranking instead. Puerto Rico, the top island on the site at 8.4, is tagged for teens and families, not small children; Condado's surf and rip currents are part of why.

Some islands are tagged for kids but score lower overall. Turks and Caicos (7.0) has a 9.5 beach score but a 5 for things to do and rooms averaging $289. Hilton Head (7.1) has lifeguarded beaches and easy driving, but a 6.5 weather score, because its winters are cool. Sardinia (7.3) has superb shallow beaches, but only from June to September.

School holidays, storms and timing

Most of the Caribbean picks are best from January to April. Summer school holidays fall inside the Atlantic hurricane season, which runs June 1 to November 30 with a peak around September 10, according to the NOAA National Hurricane Center. Aruba sits south of the usual storm track, which makes it the safest summer bet in the Caribbean on this list; Antigua, St. Thomas and Grand Cayman are in the main belt. See our hurricane and cyclone seasons guide.

Fiji's cyclone season runs November to April. For 2026-27 the Fiji Meteorological Service forecasts 11 to 15 cyclones across its region, against an average of about seven. Hawaii had a rough 2026: Hurricane Lowell's outer bands brought a tropical storm warning to Oahu in September, though damage there was limited. For a summer trip, the Mediterranean is the safer bet; just expect busy beaches in August.

Frequently asked questions

What is the best island to visit with young kids?

On our scores, Crete (8.2 out of 10): shallow lagoons like Elafonisi, many family resorts and rooms from $59 in January. If you want a nonstop flight from the US, Barbados (8.1) and Antigua (8.0) are the best choices.

Which Caribbean island is best for kids?

Barbados, then Antigua, on this ranking. Both have calm west-coast bays and US nonstops. For no passport, choose St. Thomas. For the lowest storm risk in summer, choose Aruba. Our Caribbean family ranking compares more islands.

Do kids need a passport for Puerto Rico, Hawaii or the US Virgin Islands?

No. These are US destinations. TSA's REAL ID rule applies to travelers 18 and older. Coming home from the US Virgin Islands you pass a federal citizenship check at the airport, so the USVI Department of Tourism advises carrying a passport or a birth certificate.

Is Hawaii good for a vacation with small children?

Yes, especially Oahu, which ranks fifth here: calm water at Waikiki, Ala Moana and Ko Olina, and the cheapest rooms in the state. Maui is better for mixed ages with a car; see our Hawaiian family ranking.

When is the best time to take kids to an island?

For the Caribbean, January to April, before hurricane season starts June 1. For a summer school break, the Mediterranean islands on this list (Crete, Mallorca and Naxos) are at their best from July to September.
