The best islands for solo travelers

Ranked for solo travel 64 islands scored #1: Puerto Rico, 8.4/10

Traveling alone changes what matters. You want a base you can walk, transport that does not need a rental car, places to meet people, tours you can join, and a trip that feels safe. This ranking keeps the islands our pages tag for solo travel and orders them by overall score.

Puerto Rico leads at 8.4. Old San Juan and Condado are walkable and social, tours run to the rainforest and the bioluminescent bays, and you need no passport. Barbados (8.1) and Oahu (7.9) are the other easy, English-speaking picks. Further down, Zanzibar, Bali and Palawan are far cheaper to sleep in, but they are a day or more of travel away.

Weather 9.0 Things to do 9.0 No passport

Puerto Rico is first on a combination no other solo pick matches: a 9 for things to do, an 8.9 for access from 41 US nonstop airports and a 7.4 for value. Base in Old San Juan or Condado and you can walk to the forts ($10 for 16 and older), bars and restaurants, then join tours to El Yunque and the bio bays. The cheapest San Juan rooms were $120 in January and $114 in July. The catch: beyond San Juan, without a car you depend on tours.

Barbados

Oahu

7.9/10
Weather 9.7 Things to do 9.0 No passport

Oahu has a 9.7 for weather and a 9 for things to do, and Waikiki is walkable, with TheBus and tours for the rest of the island. Pearl Harbor National Memorial is free to enter; Diamond Head costs $5 for non-residents plus a reservation. It is third because crowds score 3.9 and value 6.3: the cheapest Waikiki hotel was $139 in January and $169 in July, though that is still the lowest in Hawaii. No passport is needed, and 28 US airports fly nonstop.

Zanzibar

7.7/10
Value 10.0 Weather 9.5 Passport needed

Zanzibar has a 9.5 for weather and a 10 for value: the cheapest 3-star room in Nungwi was $36 in January and $41 in July. Hostels in Nungwi and Stone Town and shared tours sold everywhere make it easy alone, and Stone Town's Forodhani night market fills the waterfront with grilled seafood stalls. Access scores 2.1: there is no US nonstop, so plan a connection via Doha, Dubai, Istanbul or Addis Ababa. Avoid April and May, the long rains, and read the State Department's Tanzania entry warnings.

Bali

7.6/10
Value 10.0 Things to do 9.5 Passport needed

Bali has a 9.5 for things to do and a 10 for value, with a well-reviewed Seminyak 4-star at $22 in January and $30 in July. It has a big backpacker and digital-nomad scene, hostels, group tours and ride-hailing, so it is easy to meet people. Access (2) and beaches (6.5) hold it back: there is no US nonstop, and the west-coast beaches face open surf. Pick one or two bases, since driving between areas takes far longer than the map suggests.

Palawan

7.6/10
Value 10.0 Beaches 8.5 Passport needed

Palawan scores 8.5 for beaches and 10 for value: a well-reviewed El Nido hotel was $40 in January and $44 in July. Solo travelers fit straight into the joiner island-hopping tours, which ran about $19 to $29 a person in August 2026, and the shared vans from Puerto Princesa. Its weather score (7.6) reflects a June-to-November rainy season, and access is 2.3. No crowd score is counted, because the Philippines publishes no Palawan visitor total. 7.0/10
Value 9.2 Weather 7.9 Passport needed

Paros is the best solo base in the Greek islands on our scores, with a 9.2 for value: Parikia rooms were $60 in January and $89 in July. Access is its weak point (3.6), with no US nonstop: fly to Athens, then a short flight or a ferry of 2 hours 40 minutes or more. Expect strong north wind in July and August.

Weather 8.4 Things to do 8.0 Passport needed

Gran Canaria earns its place through Las Palmas, a real city with buses, nightlife and a reef-sheltered city beach at Las Canteras, so you need no car or resort. Value (6.4) and access (4.7) pull it down: south-coast rooms were $161 in January and $139 in July, and there is no US nonstop. The sea is coolest in late winter.

Ibiza

6.4/10
Weather 8.3 Beaches 8.0 Passport needed

Ibiza loses 0.4 points for a conditional verdict, because it is a June-to-September island. In summer it is one of the most social places in Europe, with buses linking Ibiza Town, Sant Antoni and the beaches. Value scores 5.2 and crowds 2.9: the cheapest Ibiza Town room was $315 on July 14, 2027, against $98 in January, when much of the island is closed. United starts the first US nonstop, Newark to Ibiza, on May 31, 2027.

How this ranking was made

The overall score weights beaches and things to do at 25% each, weather 20%, and access, value and crowds 10% each; a conditional verdict costs 0.4 points. We kept the islands tagged for solo travel: safe, social, easy without a car, with hostels or group tours. Our method page lists every source. The score does not include a separate safety measure, so read the notes below.

Which ones work without a car

  • Fully car-free: Key West's Old Town, Waikiki on Oahu, Las Palmas on Gran Canaria and Paros, where buses link Parikia, Naoussa and the main beaches.
  • Car-free with buses: Barbados, where public buses and route-taxi minibuses cover the south and west coasts, and Ibiza in summer.
  • Car-free with tours: Puerto Rico beyond San Juan, Zanzibar, Bali and Palawan, where shared tours and shared vans do the work.

Our hotel prices are for a double room for two adults. We did not price single rooms or hostel beds.

Safety and entry notes

Three of the ten need no passport: Puerto Rico, Oahu and Key West. The far islands carry extra costs and rules. Zanzibar needs a $100 Tanzania visa and $44 of mandatory Zanzibar insurance, and the State Department's Tanzania page warns that LGB travelers may be denied entry. Bali charges a $28 visa on arrival plus an $8 levy, and its traffic is a real hazard: in 2023 the governor proposed banning tourists from riding motorbikes after a series of accidents. Palawan means vans of 5 to 7.5 hours or extra flights.

Jamaica is not tagged for solo travel on our pages; the State Department rates it Level 2 with named Level 3 neighborhoods. For every island's rules, see our passport guide.
