Bringing a dog

Hard: Import permit from the Biosecurity Authority of Fiji and mandatory post-entry quarantine at Koronivia near Nausori for all US-origin pets, Hawaii and Guam included; book quarantine at least a month ahead; pit bull types, Dogo Argentino, Fila Brasileiro and Japanese Tosa banned.

Fiji works for families. Many resorts have kids' clubs, island lagoons are calm, and the flight from the West Coast has no connection. Fiji Airways also flies from Honolulu, so you can pair it with a few days on Oahu. It also works for couples who want overwater-style romance at lower prices than Bora Bora, and for budget travelers who will take a ferry instead of a seaplane.

Skip it if you want a beach town you can walk around, with bars and restaurants on the sand. Nadi is a transit town. If that is your style, Maui or Oahu are closer and need no passport.

• Nadi, near the airport. Good for the first and last night. On Kayak, the cheapest double rated 3 stars or better was Yatu Lau Transit Hotel at $31 on Wednesday, January 13, 2027, and Trans International Hotel at $39 on Wednesday, July 14, 2027, taxes and fees in.
• Denarau Island, a resort enclave by the marina, with big chain hotels, a golf course and the boats to the islands. The beach is dark sand and the water is not the draw.
• The Mamanuca islands, off the west coast. Small islands with white sand and reef, from backpacker resorts to private-island hotels. This is where Fiji earns its beach score.
• The Coral Coast, south of Nadi along the Queens Road, for Natadola Beach and family resorts with a reef lagoon.

On Viti Levu, the standout is Natadola Beach on the southwest coast: a long sweep of white sand with a gap in the reef, so expect some waves. The beaches near Nadi, such as Wailoaloa, are fine for a walk but darker and murkier than the brochures suggest.

Out in the Mamanucas, the water is clear over reef, the sand is white and the lagoons are calm, good for small children and snorkelers. The farther Yasawa islands, north of the Mamanucas, are wilder and reached by a longer boat ride.

• Garden of the Sleeping Giant, an orchid garden at the foot of the Sabeto range.
• Sigatoka Sand Dunes National Park on the Coral Coast, for dune walks above the ocean.
• Diving, including shark dives in Beqa Lagoon from Pacific Harbour.
• Village visits in the highlands, where you bring kava as a gift and dress modestly.

That is a week of variety, more than most Pacific islands on our list. Excursions are priced by operators, so compare two or three, and check what is included: transfers from Nadi hotels, lunch on the island and snorkel gear often make the difference. A good week splits into two nights on the Coral Coast for Natadola Beach and the Sigatoka dunes, and the rest on a Mamanuca island for the water.

The Fiji Meteorological Service puts the tropical cyclone season from November to April, with the peak usually in January and February, and warns that storms occasionally form in October or May. The drier, cooler months from about May to October are the classic time to go.

For November 2026 to April 2027, the service forecasts 11 to 15 cyclones across its South Pacific area of responsibility, against an average of about seven, because of a strong El Niño. West of the Dateline, where Fiji sits, it expects five to six cyclones (near or above average) and two to three severe ones (near average). East of the Dateline the outlook is worse. Fiji Airways flies nonstop to Nadi International Airport (NAN) from Los Angeles (LAX), San Francisco (SFO) and Honolulu (HNL). On October 20, 2026, its US fare table showed round-trip economy from LAX or SFO from $898 in a sale ending November 3, 2026, against $999 for year-round fares, and $875 from Honolulu.

For entry, the State Department says Americans need no visa for tourist stays under four months, a passport valid at least six months after your departure date from Fiji with a blank page, an onward or return ticket and proof of funds. Details in our passport guide.

A dog is hard. The USDA says that for all US-origin pets, Hawaii included, Fiji requires an import permit and post-entry quarantine. The Biosecurity Authority of Fiji runs the quarantine station at Koronivia, near Nausori on the far side of Viti Levu from Nadi, asks you to book it at least a month ahead, and bans pit bull types, Dogo Argentino, Fila Brasileiro and Japanese Tosa. For the trip, Nadi nights are cheap, at $31 and $39 on our test dates. Island resorts cost much more, and boat transfers to them are an extra line on the bill, so ask for both before you book.
