Oahu
Oahu is the island most visitors to Hawaii actually go to. The state's 2025 Annual Visitor Research Report counted 5,665,698 air visitors on Oahu, more than Maui, Kauai and the Big Island combined. The reasons are practical. Honolulu's airport has nonstop flights from 28 US airports, the most in the state. Waikiki has the cheapest rooms we found anywhere in Hawaii: $139 a night for a 3-star hotel on Wednesday, January 13, 2027, taxes and fees in.
It is also the only Hawaiian island with a real city. Honolulu has museums, a royal palace, a big food scene and Pearl Harbor National Memorial, which is free to enter. The North Shore, across the island, is a different world: surf towns, shrimp trucks and, in winter, some of the biggest waves on earth. The cost is crowds. Waikiki is dense, and the drive to the North Shore can be slow.

Where Oahu ranks
Who Oahu suits, and who should skip it
Oahu suits first-time visitors, solo travelers and families watching the budget. You can base yourself in Waikiki without a car, walk to the beach, and take tours or TheBus to the rest of the island. It also suits anyone who wants history and food as well as sand.
Skip it if your picture of Hawaii is a quiet resort cove. For that, Maui's Wailea and Kaanapali or Kauai's Poipu fit better. Many visitors split a week: four nights on Oahu, then a short hop to a neighbor island. Our budget Hawaii ranking compares the costs.
Where to stay: Waikiki, Ko Olina or the North Shore
- Waikiki holds most of the island's hotels. On Kayak, the cheapest 3-star-or-better hotel was Stay Hotel Waikiki at $139 for January 13, 2027 and $169 for July 14, 2027, both one night for two adults with taxes and fees. At least nine more Waikiki hotels were under $200 on the January date, including Aqua Aloha Surf Waikiki at $144 and Shoreline Hotel Waikiki at $159.
- Ko Olina on the west coast is a resort enclave built around man-made swimming lagoons. It is quieter and better for small children, but you need a car to leave it.
- The North Shore has few hotels and many rentals. It suits surfers and repeat visitors.
Note that Waikiki rooms are often small. A cheap rate usually means no view and a long walk to the sand.
Beaches: calm water, big surf and the difference
Waikiki Beach has gentle, rolling waves that make it the classic place to learn to surf. It is crowded and some stretches are narrow, but children can paddle safely on calm days. Ala Moana Beach Park nearby has a protected swimming area that locals use. On the windward side, Kailua Beach and Lanikai have soft sand and turquoise water, with trade-wind chop most afternoons.
The North Shore is a seasonal coast. In summer, Waimea Bay and Shark's Cove are often calm enough to swim and snorkel. In winter, the same beaches take waves that kill experienced swimmers; you go to watch surfers at the Banzai Pipeline, not to swim. Hanauma Bay, a protected nature preserve in a volcanic crater, is the island's best-known snorkel spot; it runs on a reservation system, so check the city's rules before you go.
Things to do, with the prices we could confirm
- Pearl Harbor National Memorial: the National Park Service lists it as fee-free. Parking is $7 a day, paid on the day by QR code. The USS Arizona Memorial program runs on a reservation schedule; book ahead.
- Diamond Head State Monument: non-residents pay $5 each plus $10 parking, and need an entry and parking reservation. Open 6 a.m. to 6 p.m., last entry 4:30 p.m.
- North Shore day: Haleiwa town, Waimea Valley, turtle beaches and, from late fall through winter, big-wave surfing.
- Windward coast: Kailua, Lanikai and the Kualoa valley used as a film location.
- Honolulu: Chinatown, Iolani Palace, the Bishop Museum and the restaurants of Kaimuki and Kakaako.
Storm damage from 2026 is limited on Oahu. The state parks division lists the Keawaula section of Kaena Point State Park as closed after storm damage to the road, and the upper Makapuu Lookout closed for repairs from October 21 to November 4, 2026.
When to go
Oahu is warm all year; the climate table on this page has the monthly numbers. Winter brings North Shore surf, whales offshore and peak prices around the holidays. Summer is calmer on the North Shore and busier with families. In our checks, the cheapest Waikiki hotel was $30 cheaper in mid-January than in mid-July.
The Central Pacific hurricane season runs June 1 to November 30, per NOAA's National Hurricane Center. In September 2026, Hurricane Lowell's outer bands brought a tropical storm warning to Oahu; a falling tree killed one man and about 21,000 customers lost power. See our hurricane season guide.
Getting there from the US
Daniel K. Inouye International Airport (HNL) has nonstops from 28 US airports, from Anchorage and Seattle to Atlanta, Boston (seasonal, resuming December 19, 2026), Detroit, Houston, New York JFK, Newark (seasonal) and Washington Dulles. New seasonal Alaska Airlines flights from Boise and Spokane start in December 2026. HNL is also the hub for flights to Lanai and Molokai.
It is a domestic flight, so a REAL ID-compliant license or a passport is enough. TSA charges a $45 ConfirmID fee if you arrive without acceptable ID. Bringing a dog is possible but slow; see our islands with a dog page.
What a trip costs
Rooms are the cheapest in Hawaii: $139 in January and $169 in July in Waikiki. Since January 1, 2026, the state Transient Accommodations Tax is 11%, up from 10.25%, under the Act 96 green fee. County lodging tax and general excise tax come on top; Kayak's totals include them. Watch for daily resort fees and hotel parking, which in Waikiki can add a lot. Without a car, you save parking and rental costs.
Tickets and tours you can book

Oahu: Full or Half Day Grand Circle Island Tour
A snack and water are included but lunch is not, and Dole train or maze tickets are extra. It is a large-coach tour; a rental car covers the same loop at your own pace.
Rating as shown on Viator

Pearl Harbor USS Arizona Memorial Tour from Waikiki
Pearl Harbor National Memorial is a fee-free park (parking is $7 a day), so you are paying for transport, timing and the briefing; drivers can book the USS Arizona program themselves on Recreation.gov. No bags are allowed at the memorial.
Rating as shown on Viator

Oahu: Shark Cage Dive on the North Shore
Food and drinks are not included and no hotel transport is listed, so you drive to Haleiwa. The cage floats at the surface, so you snorkel rather than scuba; North Shore seas can be rough in winter.

Frequently asked questions
Do you need a car on Oahu?
Not if you stay in Waikiki. You can walk to the beach and Diamond Head, take TheBus around the island and book tours to the North Shore. A car helps for the windward beaches and a full North Shore day.
Is Pearl Harbor free to visit?
Yes. The National Park Service lists Pearl Harbor National Memorial as fee-free. Parking costs $7 a day, and the USS Arizona Memorial program has limited, scheduled capacity, so reserve ahead.
Is the North Shore safe to swim in winter?
Usually not. Winter swells make Waimea Bay, Pipeline and Sunset Beach dangerous for swimmers. Summer is the swimming and snorkeling season there.
How much is the Hawaii hotel tax in 2026?
The state Transient Accommodations Tax is 11% from January 1, 2026, after the green fee raised it from 10.25%. County lodging tax and general excise tax are added, plus any resort fee.
Can you visit Lanai or Molokai from Oahu?
Yes, but only by small plane. Mokulele Airlines flies from Honolulu to both islands, and Lanai Air started four daily round trips between Honolulu and Molokai on August 12, 2026, at $169 one way including taxes and two checked bags, per Hawaii News Now. There is no ferry from Oahu. See our Lanai and Molokai pages.
Is Oahu good for a first trip to Hawaii?
Yes. It has the most flights, the cheapest rooms and the most to do without a car. See how it compares in our first-timers ranking.
