Koh Lanta

Krabi province, Andaman Sea Fly to Krabi, then road + ferry Good for young kids

Koh Lanta is what many people hope Phuket will be: long, sandy beaches with space between the towels, low-rise bungalows and no airport crowds. The main island, Ko Lanta Yai, is about 16 miles (25 km) long and 4 miles (6 km) wide. Almost everything you will use sits along its west coast, from Saladan port in the north to the national park at the southern tip.

It is also one of the cheapest islands on this site. On Kayak, the cheapest 3-star room was $28 on January 13, 2027 and $8 on July 14, 2027, taxes in, and the cheapest well-reviewed 4-star resort was $84 and $52. The price you pay is distance and season: there is no airport, and from May to October the Andaman monsoon makes the sea rough. Thailand publishes visitor numbers only for Krabi province as a whole, 4.5 million overnight tourists in 2025, so Lanta's own total is unknown.

How Koh Lanta scores

Six factors, scored 0 to 10 the same way for all 64 islands. Our verdict on this island is “it depends”, which takes 0.4 off the weighted average. There is no island-level visitor count we trust, so crowds are left out and the other five factors are re-weighted. How we score

Hotel prices: Cheapest hotel rated 4 stars or better with a Kayak guest score of 8.0+ from 100+ reviews (SriLanta Resort and Spa in January, Lanta Sand Resort and Spa in July), 1 night, 2 adults, Kayak 'Nightly total - Including all taxes + fees', checked 2026-10-20. The brief's plain rule (cheapest 3-star-or-better) gave $28 in January and $8 in July; the stricter rule is used for all six Asia islands because the July floor falls below the checker's $20 minimum.. Where Koh Lanta ranks

Who Koh Lanta is for, and who should skip it

Lanta suits families with small children, couples who want to read on a quiet beach, and travelers on a budget. The beaches are long and uncrowded, traffic is light compared with Phuket, and family bungalows are inexpensive.

Skip it if you want nightlife, big shopping or a different sight every day. Skip it, too, if your trip falls between May and October: the island stays open, but the sea is rough and many boat trips do not run. For a summer trip, Koh Samui on the Gulf side is the better choice. Our Thai island ranking compares the four on one scale.

Where to stay: Klong Dao, Long Beach or the quieter south

  • Klong Dao. The first big beach south of Saladan, close to shops and the pier, and the easiest base with children.
  • Long Beach (Phra Ae). The longest stretch of sand, with the widest choice of bungalows and restaurants.
  • Klong Khong and farther south. Quieter and more rustic. Roads get worse as you go south, and the southern coves are harder to reach.

We priced the island as a whole on Kayak on October 20, 2026. The cheapest 4-star-or-better hotel with a guest score of 8.0 or higher was $84 for January 13, 2027 (SriLanta Resort and Spa) and $52 for July 14, 2027 (Lanta Sand Resort and Spa), taxes and fees included. If you only need a clean double, the cheapest 3-star listings were $28 and $8.

Beaches: long, sandy and best in the dry season

The main beaches all face west onto the Andaman Sea: Klong Dao, Long Beach and Klong Khong are the three you will hear about first, with smaller coves farther south. From about November to April the sea is usually calm and the beaches shelve gently, which makes Klong Dao and Long Beach good for young children.

From about May to October the southwest monsoon sends swell straight onto this coast. Waves and currents can be strong, and some days are not safe for swimming. We score Lanta's beaches 8 out of 10: long, quiet and sandy, but only for half the year.

Things to do beyond the beach

  • Lanta Old Town. The administrative center on the quieter east coast, about two-thirds of the way down the island, and home to most of the island's Chao Ley (Moken) sea people.
  • Mu Ko Lanta National Park. Thailand's 62nd national park, declared in 1990, covering the southern tip of Lanta Yai and smaller islands nearby.
  • Boat trips from Saladan. Ferries and tours run to Koh Ngai and to the Phi Phi Islands. If a Phi Phi trip lands at Maya Bay, the national park charges foreign adults $12 (400 baht), and the bay is closed every year from August 1 to September 30.

That is a handful of good excursions rather than a week of them, so we score things to do 5.5. Most visitors spend most days on the beach, which is the point.

When to go

Go from about November to April, the dry season on the Andaman coast. The Thai Meteorological Department describes the southwest monsoon arriving around mid-May, and rainfall on Thailand's southern west coast peaking in September. From May to October you get heavy showers, rough water and cancelled boats, along with the lowest prices of the year: the cheapest 3-star room fell from $28 in January to $8 in July. The month-by-month climate table on this page comes from our dataset; see also our February pick.

Getting there from the US, and entry rules

There is no airport on Lanta and no US nonstop to the nearest one, Krabi (KBV). Krabi's international routes run to Kuala Lumpur, Singapore, Dubai and a few seasonal European cities, so most Americans connect through Bangkok or one of those hubs. From Krabi airport it is about 24 miles (38 km) to Lanta by road, with a car ferry to Ko Lanta Noi; a bridge built in 2015 links Lanta Noi to Lanta Yai. Shared vans were listed at about $11 to $13 a seat. In the dry season you can also come by ferry from Phuket or Phi Phi.

Entry rules are Thailand's: since September 15, 2026, US citizens get a 30-day visa-free tourist stay, down from 60, with up to 30 more days by application in Thailand. Your passport needs 6 months of validity and you must file the free Thailand Digital Arrival Card within 72 hours before arrival. The proposed 450-baht (about $13) tourist entry fee was not in force on October 20, 2026. Our passport rules guide has the details.

What a trip costs

Lanta is cheap once you arrive. Well-reviewed 4-star resorts ran $52 to $84 a night on our test dates, and simple 3-star rooms $8 to $28. Add the transfer from Krabi and the Phi Phi park fee if you take that trip. Baht conversions use the European Central Bank reference rate of October 19, 2026, about 33.6 baht to the dollar. Frequently asked questions

How do you get to Koh Lanta?

Fly to Krabi, which has no US nonstops, then travel about 24 miles (38 km) by road and car ferry. A bridge has joined Ko Lanta Noi and Ko Lanta Yai since 2015. In the dry season, ferries also run from Phuket and the Phi Phi Islands.

Is Koh Lanta good for families?

Yes, from November to April. Klong Dao and Long Beach are long, quiet and gently sloping, and family bungalows are cheap. From May to October the surf and currents make the west coast a poor choice for small children.

Is Koh Lanta worth visiting in the rainy season?

Only if price matters more than beach time. Rooms are at their cheapest, but the southwest monsoon brings rough seas and boat cancellations from about May to October.

Is Koh Lanta better than Phi Phi?

For a stay of several days, usually yes: Lanta has longer, quieter beaches and much cheaper rooms. Phi Phi has more dramatic scenery and Maya Bay, and works best as a day trip or a short stay.

Do I need a visa for Koh Lanta as an American?

No, for tourism up to 30 days, since Thailand cut its visa-free stay from 60 to 30 days on September 15, 2026. File the free Thailand Digital Arrival Card within 72 hours before you land.
