Phuket
Phuket is Thailand's largest island, about 210 square miles (543 km2) and joined to the mainland by the Sarasin Bridge. It is the first Thai island most Americans see, for practical reasons: it has a big international airport, hundreds of hotels and boat trips to Phang Nga Bay and the Phi Phi Islands. Thailand's Ministry of Tourism counted 13.0 million overnight tourists in Phuket in 2025, 10.2 million of them foreigners. You will not have it to yourself.
What you get in return is value. On Kayak, the cheapest well-reviewed 4-star hotel in Patong cost $76 a night on January 13, 2027 and $32 on July 14, 2027, taxes in. The trade-off is the season. Phuket faces the Andaman Sea, and the southwest monsoon makes its west-coast beaches rough for about half the year. Pick your months first and your beach second.

Hotel prices: Cheapest hotel rated 4 stars or better with a Kayak guest score of 8.0+ from 100+ reviews (C&N Resort and Spa in January, Andakira Hotel in July), 1 night, 2 adults, Kayak 'Nightly total - Including all taxes + fees', checked 2026-10-20. The brief's plain rule (cheapest 3-star-or-better double) gave $24 in January (Gorgeous Boutique Room) and $10 in July (Sunray Beach Hotel, Standard Double Room); the July figure is below the checker's $20 floor, so all six Asia islands use the stricter rule.. Visitor figures: Thailand Ministry of Tourism and Sports, Domestic tourism statistics Q1-Q4 2025, Southern region workbook, Phuket sheet (January-December 2025).
Where Phuket ranks
Who Phuket is for, and who should skip it
Phuket suits travelers who want choice without effort. You can sleep in a family resort, take a speedboat to Phi Phi, eat in Phuket Town and be back for dinner on the beach. Teens get diving, snorkeling and surf lessons. Couples get villas on quieter bays at prices that would buy a basic motel room in Hawaii.
Skip it if your idea of an island is one road and no traffic. Patong is dense, loud and built up, and the main roads are busy. Koh Lanta is the slower Andaman choice, and Koh Samui is the better pick for July and August. Our Thai island ranking compares all four on the same scale.
Where to stay: Patong, Kata and Karon, Old Town or the north
- Patong. The busiest beach town, with the most hotels, bars and boat-tour pickups. It is also where we priced rooms. On Kayak on October 20, 2026, the cheapest 4-star-or-better hotel with a guest score of 8.0 or higher was $76 for January 13, 2027 (C&N Resort and Spa) and $32 for July 14, 2027 (Andakira Hotel), taxes and fees included. If you only need a clean double, the cheapest 3-star listing was $24 in January and $10 in July.
- Kata and Karon. Two west-coast beaches just south of Patong. Karon is Phuket's second-biggest tourist beach. Both are calmer at night and good for families.
- Phuket Old Town. Inland, around Thalang, Dibuk and Krabi roads, with Sino-Portuguese shophouses. Stay here for food and street life, and drive to the beach.
- The north (Mai Khao, Bang Tao, Kamala). Larger resorts, quieter sand and a shorter ride to the airport.
Beaches: what the water is like, and when
The famous beaches line the west coast: Patong, Karon, Kata, Kamala and, farther north, Mai Khao. From roughly November to April the sea on this side is usually flat and swimmable, and Kata and Karon work for young children. From about May to October the southwest monsoon pushes swell onto the same beaches. That is when red flags go up and rip currents become the main danger. Obey the flags; this is not a season for weak swimmers on the west coast.
Patong is the most crowded and has the most jet skis and longtail boats. For calmer water in any month, take a boat to the islands in Phang Nga Bay or to Phi Phi, where bays are more sheltered. We score Phuket's beaches 8 out of 10: very good sand close to every hotel, with a long, rough wet season.
Things to do beyond the beach
- Big Buddha. A 148-foot (45 m) marble-clad statue above Chalong Bay, the island's best viewpoint.
- Wat Chalong. Phuket's best-known temple, with a statue of Luang Pho Cham, who helped residents during the 1876 Angyee rebellion.
- Phuket Old Town. Shophouse streets, cafes and night markets; the On On Hotel here appeared in the 2000 film The Beach.
- Phi Phi day trip. About 50 minutes by speedboat. If your boat lands at Maya Bay, the national park charges foreign adults $12 (400 baht) and children 4 to 11 $6 (200 baht), and the bay closes every year from August 1 to September 30.
- Phang Nga Bay. The limestone islands between Phuket and Krabi, by boat or sea kayak.
That is a full week without repeating, which is why we score things to do 8.5. The gap to Bali is culture: Phuket has temples and an old town, not a living craft and ceremony scene.
When to go
The driest, calmest months on the Andaman coast run from about November to April. The Thai Meteorological Department describes the southwest monsoon arriving around mid-May and the northeast monsoon lasting from mid-October to mid-February; on Thailand's southern west coast rainfall peaks in September. In practice that means showers most afternoons from May to October, rougher seas and some boat trips cancelled.
Low season has one big upside: price. The same Patong search fell from $76 in January to $32 in July. If you must travel in July or August, our July pick is on the Gulf side. The climate table on this page shows each month from our dataset.
Getting there from the US, and entry rules
There are no nonstop flights from the US to Phuket. The airport's route list shows connections through Bangkok, Singapore, Doha, Dubai, Istanbul, Seoul, Hong Kong and Taipei. Plan on one stop via a Gulf or Asian hub, or two if you route through Bangkok on a domestic hop.
Entry rules changed this fall. Since September 15, 2026, US citizens get a 30-day visa-free tourist stay, down from 60 days, according to the Tourism Authority of Thailand. You can ask immigration in Thailand for up to 30 more days. Your passport needs 6 months of validity from entry. Every arrival must also complete the free Thailand Digital Arrival Card online within the 72 hours before landing; ignore lookalike sites that charge. The long-discussed tourist entry fee, first proposed at 300 baht and now at 450 baht (about $13), was still not being collected on October 20, 2026. Our passport rules guide covers the paperwork for every island on the site.
What a trip costs
Rooms are the cheap part. Nights in a 4-star Patong hotel ran $32 to $76 on our two test dates. The expensive part is the flight, because every route needs at least one connection.
Smaller charges to budget for: the Maya Bay park fee of $12 (400 baht) per adult on Phi Phi tours that do not include it, and a speedboat to Phi Phi from Rassada Pier, which one operator listed at $21 (700 baht) one way for a one-hour crossing. Baht conversions use the European Central Bank reference rate of October 19, 2026, about 33.6 baht to the dollar.

Frequently asked questions
Do US citizens need a visa for Phuket?
No, for tourism up to 30 days. Since September 15, 2026, Thailand's visa exemption for US passports is 30 days, down from 60. You can request up to 30 more days from immigration in Thailand, and you must file the free Thailand Digital Arrival Card within 72 hours before arrival.
Is there a tourist tax to enter Thailand?
Not yet. A fee was first proposed at 300 baht and is now planned at 450 baht (about $13), but as of October 20, 2026 it still needed Cabinet approval and was not being collected.
What is the best month to visit Phuket?
Aim for November to April, when the Andaman Sea is usually calm on the west-coast beaches. From May to October the southwest monsoon brings rain, swell and red flags, though hotel prices drop sharply.
Are there direct flights from the US to Phuket?
No. You connect through a hub such as Bangkok, Singapore, Doha, Dubai, Istanbul, Seoul or Hong Kong.
Is Phuket or Koh Samui better?
Phuket has more flights, more hotels and more day trips; Samui is smaller and calmer. The deciding factor is the month: Phuket's west coast is best from November to April, while Samui is wettest late in the year and good in July and August.
