São Miguel (Azores)

Azores, Portugal Nonstop from 3 US airports Crater lakes and hot springs

São Miguel is the biggest island of the Azores, Portugal's mid-Atlantic archipelago, and the closest thing in Europe to a quick trip from the US. Azores Airlines flies nonstop from Boston and New York JFK all year, and United adds Newark in summer. You land in Ponta Delgada and within an hour can be looking down into the crater lakes of Sete Cidades, soaking in iron-rich hot springs at Furnas or walking between tea rows on the north coast.

It is a nature island, not a beach island. The Azores statistics office (SREA) counted 840,244 guests in São Miguel's hotels, local lodging, campsites and youth hostels in 2025. Prices swing hard with the season: our cheapest 3-star Ponta Delgada room was $55 on a January night and $123 in July, taxes included. The weather swings too, sometimes within an hour.

Who São Miguel is for, and who should skip it

São Miguel suits couples and families who enjoy a road trip, and teens who like hiking, canyoning and boats. Distances are short, so you can base in Ponta Delgada and see most of the island on day trips. For East Coast travelers, the short nonstop flight makes a long weekend realistic.

Skip it if you want reliable sunshine or warm water. The Azores sit in the open Atlantic, and clouds can hide a crater lake for a whole morning. For winter sun, the Canary Islands are the better bet; for a similar green, walking-led trip with a bigger town, compare Madeira.

Where to stay, with the prices we found

  • Ponta Delgada (south coast). The main town, with the marina, restaurants and whale-watching boats. On Kayak, the cheapest 3-star-or-better property in central Ponta Delgada was $55 for Wednesday, January 13, 2027 (Comercial Azores Guest House) and $123 for Wednesday, July 14, 2027 (Hotel Alcides), for 2 adults with taxes and fees included. Summer more than doubles the price.
  • Furnas (east). A spa village in a volcanic valley, with hot pools and steaming vents. Stay a night to soak after the day visitors leave.
  • Ribeira Grande (north coast). Closest to the surf beach at Santa Bárbara, the tea plantations and Caldeira Velha.
  • Vila Franca do Campo (south). A small town facing an islet with a ring-shaped swimming lagoon.

Beaches: black sand, surf and natural pools

  • Santa Bárbara near Ribeira Grande: a long black-sand surf beach. Good for lessons in summer, rough in winter.
  • Praia do Pópulo east of Ponta Delgada: the handiest town beach, dark sand, calmer on settled days.
  • Praia do Fogo in Ribeira Quente: a sheltered south-coast beach, one of the better options with children in summer.
  • Ponta da Ferraria in the west: a rock pool where a hot spring mixes with the sea. Swim only in calm conditions.
  • Mosteiros: black sand and sea stacks at sunset. Strong currents.

The sea is cold for most of the year and only comfortable for many people in high summer. That is why São Miguel scores a 4 for beaches.

Things to do

  • Sete Cidades: the blue and green crater lakes, best from the Vista do Rei viewpoint or on the rim walk. Go when the cloud lifts.
  • Lagoa do Fogo: a crater lake high in the middle of the island, with a steep path down to its shore.
  • Furnas: hot springs at Terra Nostra Park and Poça da Dona Beija, steaming fumaroles by the lake and cozido, a stew slow-cooked in the volcanic ground.
  • Whale and dolphin watching from Ponta Delgada, one of the island's best-known activities.
  • Gorreana tea plantation on the north coast, and the warm stream at Caldeira Velha.
  • Canyoning, kayaking and hiking on marked trails across the island.

We could not load official 2026 ticket prices for Terra Nostra and the other paid pools, so check them before you go. The variety earns São Miguel an 8.5 for things to do: a full week of nature and food, with less culture than Madeira or Tenerife.

When to go

The Azores are mild but changeable all year. Summer is the driest, warmest and busiest season, with the best odds of clear crater views. Autumn and winter bring more rain and wind, and the sea is coolest in late winter and early spring. Shoulder months trade some rain for lower prices. The 12-month table on this page has the numbers.

Unlike the Canaries and Madeira, the Azores do get Atlantic hurricanes now and then, usually weakening as they arrive. The National Hurricane Center's season runs June 1 to November 30. Its report on Lorenzo says the storm brought hurricane-force winds to the western Azores, Flores and Corvo, in early October 2019. If you travel from September to November, buy flexible fares and read our storm-season guide.

Getting there from the US, and entry rules

Flights land at João Paulo II Airport (PDL) in Ponta Delgada. Azores Airlines flies nonstop from Boston and New York JFK all year, though JFK is thinner in winter and the airline cancelled several December 2025 and January 2026 JFK dates. United flies from Newark in summer, from early May in 2026. United has also announced Newark to Terceira, another Azores island, from June 9, 2027.

The Azores are part of Portugal and the Schengen area. A US citizen needs a passport valid for at least 3 months beyond departure and no visa for up to 90 days in any 180-day period. The EU Entry/Exit System takes fingerprints and a photo, fully since April 10, 2026. ETIAS is not yet in operation; the fee will be $22 (€20). The US runs a consulate in Ponta Delgada. More in our passport rules guide.

What a trip costs

Ponta Delgada was the cheapest place we priced in winter: $55 in January against $123 in July, taxes included. Rent a car for the crater lakes and Furnas; the State Department warns of narrow cobbled streets, blind curves and livestock on country roads. We could not confirm a tourist tax from an official Azores source as of October 20, 2026, so ask your hotel.

A dog from the US needs the standard EU paperwork, plus written notice to Portuguese authorities at least 48 hours before arrival. See how it compares on our best islands in Europe list and on islands for couples.

Frequently asked questions

Can you fly direct to the Azores from the US?

Yes. Azores Airlines flies nonstop to Ponta Delgada on São Miguel from Boston and New York JFK all year, and United flies from Newark in summer.

Is São Miguel worth visiting in winter?

Yes if you want hot springs, empty viewpoints and low prices: $55 a night on our January date. Expect rain, wind and clouds over the crater lakes, and a sea too cold for most swimmers.

How many days do you need on São Miguel?

Four to five days covers Sete Cidades, Lagoa do Fogo, Furnas, the tea plantations and a whale-watching trip, with spare time for bad weather. Add days if you want to hop to another island.

Can you swim in the sea in the Azores?

Yes, mainly in summer, at beaches like Praia do Fogo and Praia do Pópulo or in natural rock pools. The water is cool for most of the year, and the north-coast beaches have strong surf.

Do you need a car on São Miguel?

It helps. Tours cover the main sights from Ponta Delgada, but a car lets you wait for clouds to clear at Sete Cidades and reach Furnas at your own pace. Drive carefully on narrow rural roads.
