Tenerife

Canary Islands, Spain No US nonstop: connect in Europe US passport; ETIAS not yet live

Tenerife is the Canary Island with the most to do. It has Mount Teide, at 12,188 feet (3,715 m) the highest peak in Spain, inside a UNESCO-listed national park. It has a UNESCO old town in San Cristóbal de La Laguna, a green, cliff-edged north and a sunny resort coast in the south. It also has the most visitors: 7.56 million tourists stayed on the island in 2025, according to the Canary Islands statistics office (ISTAC).

Two things matter for an American planning a trip. First, there is no nonstop flight from the US. United flew Newark to Tenerife South until May 2025 and has not returned, so you connect in Europe or Canada. Second, this is a winter sun island, not a tropical one. Days stay mild all year, but the Atlantic here is cool, and in January most people swim in heated hotel pools rather than the sea. If you accept both, the hotel prices are hard to beat: we found $124 for a January night on the south coast, taxes included.

Where Tenerife ranks

Who Tenerife is for, and who should skip it

Tenerife suits families with mixed ages and teens. You can split a week between the beach, a cable car to the top of a volcano, whale-watching boats from the southern marinas and the big water parks on the south coast. Roads are good and car rental is easy, so a family can base in one resort and drive to the rest.

Skip it if your idea of an island is warm, calm water you can float in for hours in January. The sea is at its coolest in late winter. It also is not a quiet island. Tenerife takes the largest share of Canary tourism, and residents have marched against the model: the movement Canarias tiene un límite held large protests on April 20, 2024, October 20, 2024 and May 18, 2025, calling for a tourism moratorium, limits on vacation rentals and an ecotax. Tenerife also holds 41.2% of the 47,117 vacation homes ISTAC counted across the islands in December 2025. None of this makes a visit unsafe, but you should know the debate is local and real.

Couples looking for a slower pace may prefer Lanzarote, and walkers who do not care about beaches should compare Madeira.

Where to stay, with the prices we found

  • Los Cristianos and Playa de las Américas (south). The main resort strip, with the most hotels, the calmest sunshine and ferries to La Gomera from Los Cristianos. On Kayak, the cheapest 3-star-or-better hotel here was $124 for Wednesday, January 13, 2027 and $92 for Wednesday, July 14, 2027, both for 2 adults with taxes and fees included. Cheaper rooms came up first in the search, but they were at Golf del Sur, farther east along the coast.
  • Costa Adeje (south, just west). Newer, more upscale hotels along Playa del Duque and Fañabé. Four-star rooms in Adeje on the same January search started at $222.
  • Puerto de la Cruz (north). An older town with more Spanish life, black-sand beaches and the Lago Martiánez pools. It is cloudier than the south, which matters in winter.
  • Santa Cruz and La Laguna (northeast). Best for a city stay, museums and the Anaga hills, with Playa de las Teresitas close by.

Beaches: decent, often man-made, never tropical

Tenerife's beaches are good rather than great. Many of the southern ones are sheltered by breakwaters, which is why they are calm.

  • Playa de Los Cristianos: sheltered, gently shelving, the easiest swim for young children.
  • Playa del Duque in Costa Adeje: golden sand, sunbeds, calm on most days.
  • Playa de las Teresitas near Santa Cruz: a long pale-sand beach behind a breakwater, popular with locals on weekends.
  • Playa Jardín in Puerto de la Cruz: black volcanic sand and real Atlantic waves. Watch the flags.
  • Benijo in the Anaga hills: dramatic and wild, with strong currents. Look, do not swim.

That is why we score Tenerife's beaches a 6 out of 10: fine for a family week, but you do not fly here for the sand.

Things to do, priced where a price exists

  • Teide cable car. A return ticket starts at $48 (€43) and an ascent-only ticket at $27 (€24) on the official booking site. The top station is at 11,663 feet (3,555 m), and your stay up there is limited to one hour. The final climb to the crater needs a separate permit from the island council's Tenerife ON service, which the operator advises booking months ahead.
  • Teide National Park itself, a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2007. Drive through Las Cañadas for the lava fields even if you skip the cable car. Bring warm layers: winter trails can close for ice and snow.
  • San Cristóbal de La Laguna, UNESCO-listed since 1999, for a walk through colonial streets and a coffee in the university town.
  • Anaga Rural Park for laurel-forest hikes and tiny villages, and Los Gigantes for the sea cliffs, best seen from a boat.
  • Whale and dolphin watching from the southern marinas, and a day ferry to La Gomera from Los Cristianos.
  • Loro Parque in Puerto de la Cruz and Siam Park in Costa Adeje for families. We could not load either park's official prices, so check them before you budget.

That range earns Tenerife a 9 for things to do, the highest of the four Canary Islands we rank.

When to go

Tenerife works all year. The south coast is the drier, sunnier side; the north catches the trade-wind clouds and is greener. The wettest months are late autumn and winter, though rain on the southern resorts is light. Winter is the peak season for Northern Europeans escaping the cold, so January and February are busy. The sea is coolest in late winter and warmest from August to October. The 12-month table on this page has the numbers.

The Canaries sit outside the usual hurricane tracks, but not entirely out of reach. The US National Hurricane Center's report on Hermine says the storm's remnants brought record rainfall and flooding to the islands in September 2022. Saharan dust episodes, called calima, can also haze the sky for a few days. Our storm-season guide explains how we treat these risks.

Getting there from the US, and entry rules

Most visitors land at Tenerife Sur (TFS), close to the southern resorts. There is no nonstop flight from the US: United's Newark service ended on May 2, 2025, and route trackers list no US nonstop for 2026. Connect through Madrid, Barcelona, Lisbon or another European hub. From Canada, Air Canada lists seasonal Toronto flights from October 26, 2026 and Montreal flights from November 1, 2026.

Tenerife is part of Spain and the Schengen area. A US citizen needs a passport valid for at least 3 months beyond your departure and no visa for stays of up to 90 days in any 180-day period. Since April 10, 2026 the EU's Entry/Exit System registers your fingerprints and photo at the border instead of stamping your passport. ETIAS is not yet in operation; the EU says it will announce the start date months in advance and the fee will be $22 (€20). See our passport rules guide.

What a trip costs

Hotel nights are the good news. Our south-coast hotel was $124 in January and $92 in July, taxes in. Taxes and fees are included in Kayak's total. We found no regional tourist tax in force in the Canary Islands as of October 20, 2026, though protesters keep asking for one. Budget the Teide cable car at $48 per adult and a rental car if you want to see the north.

Bringing a dog from the US is ordinary EU paperwork: an ISO microchip, a rabies shot at least 21 days before travel and a USDA-endorsed health certificate. Compare the other Canaries on our Canary Islands ranking or see the best Canary Island for families.

Frequently asked questions

Is there a direct flight from the US to Tenerife?

No. United flew Newark to Tenerife South until May 2, 2025 and dropped its planned winter return. As of October 2026 you need one connection, usually in Madrid, Lisbon or another European hub.

Is Tenerife warm enough to swim in January?

The air is mild, but the sea is close to its coolest of the year. Many people swim briefly in the sheltered southern beaches and spend more time in heated hotel pools. For warm sea swimming in January, look at the Caribbean.

Which part of Tenerife is best to stay in?

The south, around Los Cristianos, Playa de las Américas and Costa Adeje, for sunshine and beaches. Puerto de la Cruz in the north for a more Spanish town and greener scenery, with more cloud.

Do Americans need ETIAS for Tenerife?

Not yet. The European Commission says ETIAS is not in operation and no applications are being collected. You need a passport valid 3 months beyond departure, and your fingerprints and photo are taken under the Entry/Exit System.

Do you need a permit to climb Mount Teide?

You need a permit only for the final trail to the summit crater, issued by the island council through Tenerife ON. The cable car to the upper station and its viewpoint trails do not need one.
