Cozumel
Cozumel is a reef island first. The west coast faces the mainland across a sheltered channel, and the reefs of Cozumel Reefs National Park, Palancar among them, draw divers from all over the world. Rooms are cheap: the lowest 3-star-rated price on Google Hotels in San Miguel was $37 a night with taxes on both January 13 and July 14, 2027.
It is also a cruise island on a huge scale. Mexico's tourism ministry recorded 4,724,255 cruise passengers and 1,299 ship calls at Cozumel in 2025, far more than any other Mexican port. Overnight visitors are a small fraction of that: 188,251 foreign tourists arrived by air at Cozumel airport, down 16.8% from 2024. Plan your town and beach days around the ship schedule.

Weather month by month
Best months by our weather score: February, March, April. Daytime highs, rain and sunshine are 2016–2025 averages at Cozumel International Airport (Open-Meteo historical weather archive); sea temperatures are 2022–2025 averages for the nearest sea area (Open-Meteo marine archive). Months marked in the storm row fall in the Atlantic hurricane season (June 1 to November 30); the score takes that risk into account.

Where Cozumel ranks
Who it is for, and who should skip it
Go if you dive or snorkel, or want to learn. Cozumel's reefs and its cheap guesthouses make it one of the best-value water trips on this site, and teenagers can get certified here. Budget travelers also do well: several 3-star-rated rooms in town came in under $52 with taxes.
Skip it if the beach is the point. The calm west coast is mostly ironshore rock and paid beach clubs, and the sandy east coast faces open surf. Grand Cayman and Roatan both pair good reef with a better swimming beach.
Where to stay
- San Miguel de Cozumel, the only town, has the cheapest rooms, the ferry pier and most restaurants. With taxes, Posada Edem was $37 on both dates; Bea Rooms and Studios was $46 and Hotel Casa Colonial $48 in January, and Mary Carmen and Hotel Bello Caribe were $51 in July. These are simple guesthouses and small hotels.
- North hotel zone, north of town, has quieter waterfront hotels, away from the cruise piers.
- South hotel zone has the all-inclusives and dive resorts closest to the southern reefs, and also the cruise terminals.
Beaches
On the west coast, the water is usually calm and clear, but sand is limited. Most swimming happens from beach clubs such as Paradise Beach and around Playa Palancar, where you pay or spend to use the facilities. Children can swim here, but footing is often rocky.
The east coast has the wild, sandy beaches, with strong waves and currents on most days. Only a few spots, such as the rock-sheltered cove at Chen Rio, are usually calm enough for a swim; heed red flags. That split is why we score Cozumel 6 out of 10 for beaches: the island's water is better for snorkeling than for lying on sand.
Things to do
Diving and snorkeling lead: wall and drift dives on Palancar, Columbia and Santa Rosa reefs, and shore snorkeling along the west coast. On land, Punta Sur at the southern tip has a lighthouse, lagoon and beaches; the San Gervasio Maya ruins are inland; and the east coast road is a good scenic drive.
The ferry to Playa del Carmen opens up the Riviera Maya for day trips. That variety earns 7 out of 10 for things to do. Park fees and tour prices change often and we did not verify them, so check before you go.
Cruise crowds, by the numbers
Cozumel had 1,299 cruise calls in 2025, about 25 a week on average, and 4,724,255 passengers, up 2.3% on 2024. In December 2025 alone, 161 ships brought 568,531 passengers. By comparison, Cozumel airport handled 646,606 passengers in all of 2025, arrivals and departures together, according to its operator ASUR.
Ship passengers concentrate in the south hotel zone, downtown San Miguel and the nearby beach clubs during the day. Mornings, evenings and the north end are quieter. If you dive, the boats go out early and avoid most of it.
When to go
The dry season, roughly December to April, is the busiest for both hotel guests and cruise ships. Summer is hotter and more humid, with calm seas for diving. The climate table below has each month.
Cozumel sits in the path of western Caribbean hurricanes. The Atlantic season runs June 1 to November 30 and peaks around September 10, according to NOAA's National Hurricane Center. See our hurricane guide for the month-by-month risk.
Getting there, entry rules and fees
Fly into Cozumel International (CZM). Wikipedia's airline table lists year-round nonstops from Dallas/Fort Worth, Houston and Miami, and seasonal flights from Atlanta, Charlotte, Chicago O'Hare, Denver and Minneapolis. Many more visitors fly to Cancun and take the passenger ferry from Playa del Carmen.
You need a passport book to fly; a passport card is not accepted by air. Mexico now issues a digital entry record (FMMD) at the airport, so you do not fill in a paper tourist card, and no visa is needed for stays up to 180 days. Quintana Roo also charges every foreign tourist the state Visitax, which its official site says applies to Cozumel. We could not confirm the 2026 amounts of the Visitax or Mexico's non-resident fee from an official page today.
The State Department rates Mexico and Quintana Roo Level 2, exercise increased caution (May 29, 2026), noting gang shootings that have injured bystanders in the state.
What a trip costs
Rooms are cheaper than on any other island we priced in the western Caribbean and the Bahamas. With taxes and fees, Google Hotels showed 3-star-rated rooms in San Miguel at $37 on January 13, 2027 and $37 on July 14, 2027, with several others between $46 and $51. A five-night winter stay at the cheapest of them comes to about $185 in rooms. Resorts in the north and south hotel zones cost far more, and we did not price them.
Your real costs are on the water. Dive packages, snorkel boats, park entry at Punta Sur or the reef park, and the Visitax are all extra, and their prices change. If you plan to fly into Cancun to save on airfare, add the transfer to Playa del Carmen and the ferry crossing to your budget. Compare the total with our cheap islands ranking before you decide.
