Grand Cayman
Grand Cayman is the safe, simple, expensive choice. Its Seven Mile Beach is long, sandy and usually calm right in front of the hotels, the US State Department rates the Cayman Islands Level 1, exercise normal precautions, and you can fly nonstop from 20 US airports, including Los Angeles on Cayman Airways.
The price is the catch. On Google Hotels, the cheapest room in a property rated 3 stars or better on Seven Mile Beach was $337 a night with taxes on January 13, 2027. The same hotel was $217 on July 14, 2027. Beyond the beach, the island offers a few excellent water days and not much else, so it rewards people who want to slow down.

Weather month by month
Best months by our weather score: February, March, April. Daytime highs, rain and sunshine are 2016–2025 averages at Owen Roberts International Airport (Open-Meteo historical weather archive); sea temperatures are 2022–2025 averages for the nearest sea area (Open-Meteo marine archive). Months marked in the storm row fall in the Atlantic hurricane season (June 1 to November 30); the score takes that risk into account.

Where Grand Cayman ranks
Who it is for, and who should skip it
Grand Cayman suits families with young children. The water on Seven Mile Beach is usually flat, the drives are short and the island is easy to navigate. It also suits couples who want quiet and divers who want reef and wreck sites close to shore.
Skip it if you are counting dollars or want variety. The island is flat, with no rainforest or mountains, and the sights are few. Jamaica has far more to do for a fraction of the room price, and Turks and Caicos has a similar calm beach with a similar bill.
Where to stay
- Seven Mile Beach is where most hotels and condos sit. On January 13, 2027, the cheapest totals with taxes were The Locale Hotel at $337, The Grand Caymanian Resort at $367, Holiday Inn Resort at $446 and Seven Mile Beach Resort and Club at $454. In July the Locale dropped to $217 and the Holiday Inn to $286.
- George Town, at the south end of the beach, is the capital and the cruise tender port. It is handy but busy on ship days.
- West Bay, north of Seven Mile Beach, is quieter, with condos and dive resorts.
- East End and Rum Point are the far side of the island: very quiet, a long drive from restaurants, good for couples.
Beaches
Seven Mile Beach is the main event: a long sweep of soft sand on the sheltered west coast, with calm, clear water most days. It is public along its length, so condo guests and hotel guests share it. Starfish Point on the north coast has knee-deep water where children can see starfish; leave them in the water. Rum Point nearby has shallow water and a beach bar.
Away from those, much of the shore is ironshore, sharp limestone that is poor for swimming. That is why we score Grand Cayman 8.5 out of 10 for beaches: one excellent beach and a couple of good ones, not a coastline of them.
Things to do
The signature trip is Stingray City, a shallow sandbar in North Sound where boats stop so you can stand among southern stingrays. Diving is the other reason to come, with wall dives and the wreck of the USS Kittiwake off Seven Mile Beach.
On land, the Queen Elizabeth II Botanic Park, Pedro St. James historic house, the blowholes on the south coast and a night tour of the bioluminescent bay fill a day or two. That adds up to 6.5 out of 10 for things to do: several good days, but not a week of variety. Prices vary by operator and we did not verify them, so compare before you book.
Crowds and cruise days
Cruise passengers outnumber overnight visitors by more than two to one. The Cayman Islands statistics office counted 1,076,900 cruise passengers and 437,800 air arrivals in 2024, across all three islands. Cruise numbers were 15% lower than in 2023, and ship calls fell from 407 to 356.
Ships anchor off George Town and tender passengers ashore, so the effect is concentrated. On busy ship days, expect a crowded waterfront, full Stingray City boats and more people at the south end of Seven Mile Beach. Book Stingray City for a morning when fewer ships are in, or stay at the West Bay end of the beach, where the crowds thin out. The statistics office notes that cruise passengers generally come ashore for less than a day, so evenings stay quiet.
When to go
The dry, breezy season runs roughly from December to April and is the most expensive time to stay. Summer is hotter and more humid, with more showers, and room prices fall: our hotel was 36% cheaper in July than in January. The month-by-month table below has the details.
Grand Cayman is in the Atlantic hurricane belt. The season runs June 1 to November 30, with a peak around September 10 according to NOAA's National Hurricane Center. Arrivals data from the Cayman statistics office show September and October are the quietest months for visitors. See our hurricane season guide.

What a trip costs
Rooms are the big cost. With taxes and fees in, the cheapest 3-star-rated room on Seven Mile Beach was $337 on January 13, 2027 and $217 on July 14, 2027. Most mid-range hotels we saw ran $440 to $460 in January.
Condos with kitchens can bring a family's daily cost down, since eating out is a large part of the bill. If cost matters most, compare our best Caribbean islands for families ranking before you book.
