Roatán

Bay Islands, Honduras Nonstop from 6 US airports Level 3 advisory, Honduras

Roatan sits on the Mesoamerican Barrier Reef off the north coast of Honduras. It combines two things that rarely come cheap together: a calm, sandy swimming beach at West Bay, with reef a short swim offshore, and some of the lowest room prices on this site. The cheapest 3-star-rated room on Google Hotels was $52 a night with taxes on January 13, 2027.

Two numbers set the terms. The US State Department rates Honduras Level 3, reconsider travel, for crime and terrorism (August 25, 2026), though it does not name Roatan among its high-crime areas. And the Honduran Tourism Institute counted 1,802,495 cruise visitors to Honduras in 2024, against 119,262 tourists who arrived by air at Roatan's airport.

Weather month by month

Best months by our weather score: March, April, May. Daytime highs, rain and sunshine are 2016–2025 averages at Juan Manuel Gálvez International Airport (Open-Meteo historical weather archive); sea temperatures are 2022–2025 averages for the nearest sea area (Open-Meteo marine archive). Months marked in the storm row fall in the Atlantic hurricane season (June 1 to November 30); the score takes that risk into account.

Where Roatán ranks

Who it is for, and who should skip it

Roatan suits divers and snorkelers on a budget, and teenagers who want an open-water certification. You can walk off the sand at West Bay and snorkel over reef.

Skip it if the advisory level matters to you, or if anyone in your group may need serious medical care: the State Department says injured travelers in Honduras will likely need to travel to a major city for proper treatment. Grand Cayman is the Level 1 alternative, and Cozumel is the cheaper Mexican one.

Where to stay

  • West Bay has the best beach and most of the resorts. Seagrape was $96 with taxes on January 13, 2027.
  • West End, just north, is a small, walkable village with dive shops, bars and cheaper rooms. Mame Trees, rated 4 stars by Google, was $69 on July 14, 2027.
  • Sandy Bay, between West End and Coxen Hole, is quieter, with small hotels along the reef.
  • East End and the area around Camp Bay are remote and slow, good for people who want to get away from cruise days.

The very cheapest 3-star-rated rooms in our Google Hotels search were Hotel Los Corales at $52 in January and $54 in July, and Lenca World at $54. We could not confirm exactly where on the island Los Corales sits, so check the map before booking.

Beaches

West Bay Beach is the one to know: soft sand, calm, shallow water and coral close to shore, with snorkelers in the water all day. Half Moon Bay in West End is a small, sheltered cove with easy snorkeling. Beyond those two, good swimming beaches are few, and West Bay fills with cruise passengers on busy ship days.

That earns 7 out of 10: one very good beach plus a cove, not a coastline of them.

Things to do

Diving and snorkeling on the reef, much of it within the Roatan Marine Park area, are the reasons to come. On land, Gumbalimba Park, Carambola Botanical Gardens, zip lines and a visit to the Garifuna community at Punta Gorda round out a stay. Boats also connect Roatan with neighboring Utila, the budget dive island.

We score things to do 6.5 out of 10. The State Department notes that safety inspections of equipment are rare in Honduras, so choose dive and adventure operators that use internationally certified equipment and guides. Prices vary and we did not verify them.

Safety, water and health

The Level 3 advisory covers all of Honduras. The State Department's list of high-crime areas names Distrito Central, Cortes and Colon on the mainland, not the Bay Islands, but it does not give Roatan a separate, lower level. Use registered taxis or hotel transfers, and keep valuables out of sight.

It also says tap water is not safe to drink in Honduras, and that health care outside the major cities is limited. Carry travel insurance that covers medical evacuation, especially if you dive.

When to go

Winter brings the most visitors and the most cruise ships. Rain varies a lot through the year here, so check the climate table below for the wettest and driest months before you book.

Roatan sits in the western Caribbean hurricane zone. The Atlantic season runs June 1 to November 30 and peaks around September 10, according to NOAA's National Hurricane Center. Our hurricane guide has the details.

Getting there from the US

Fly into Juan Manuel Galvez International (RTB). Wikipedia's airline table lists American from Dallas/Fort Worth and Miami, Delta from Atlanta, United from Houston and seasonally Denver, and seasonal Sun Country from Minneapolis.

You need a passport valid for 6 months beyond your arrival date with a blank page, and a return or onward ticket. No visa is needed for stays of 90 days or less. See our passport guide for other islands' rules.

Cruise days and crowds

Cruise traffic in Honduras keeps growing. The Honduran Tourism Institute estimates 1,802,495 cruise visitors in 2024, up 29.4% on 2023, and 1,472,035 from January to October 2025, 3% more than a year earlier. Its figures include crew who go ashore and cover the whole country, but Roatan, with its cruise terminals near Coxen Hole and at Mahogany Bay, is the main port.

On a busy ship day, buses and tours carry passengers to West Bay Beach and the parks. If you are staying on the island, swim and snorkel early, or spend ship days in West End, on a dive boat or on the quieter East End.

What a trip costs

Rooms are cheap. With taxes and fees, the lowest 3-star-rated prices on Google Hotels were $52 on January 13, 2027 and $54 on July 14, 2027. A five-night January stay at that price is about $260 in rooms. On the beach at West Bay, Seagrape was $96 in January; in West End, Mame Trees was $69 in July.

Diving is the big expense, sold by dive shops at prices we did not verify. Add travel insurance with medical evacuation cover, which the State Department's medical notes make worth having. Compare totals in our cheap islands ranking.
