Jamaica

Caribbean, west of Haiti Nonstop from 24 US airports Passport, Level 2 advisory

Hurricane Melissa struck western Jamaica in late October 2025. A year on, the island is open: the Jamaica Tourist Board says all three international airports and the cruise ports are running normally, and most of the attractions visitors come for are trading again. The recovery is not finished. The Tourist Board's own reopening list still shows seven large Montego Bay resorts closed until 2027, plus Unico Montego Bay, listed as opening in March 2027, and two Sandals properties there return on December 18, 2026.

That makes Jamaica a choice about where, not whether. Negril's Seven Mile Beach and the Ocho Rios coast are trading. Montego Bay works if your hotel is open, and it is also where the cheapest beds are: Google Hotels showed a 3-star-rated room for $53 a night with taxes on both January 13 and July 14, 2027. The US State Department rates Jamaica Level 2, exercise increased caution, for crime and health risks, and names specific neighborhoods to avoid.

Where Jamaica ranks

Who should go, and who should wait

Go if you want an all-inclusive with real things to do outside the gate. Jamaica has more variety than any flat beach island in this group: waterfalls, rivers, mountains, music and food. Couples, budget travelers and teenagers get the most from it.

Wait, or go elsewhere, if your plan depends on one specific Montego Bay resort. The Tourist Board lists Breathless, Dreams, Hyatt Zilara, Hyatt Ziva, Jewel Grande, Secrets St. James and Secrets Wild Orchid as reopening in 2027, and Unico Montego Bay as opening in March 2027. Catalonia Montego Bay and both Grand Decameron properties are listed as closed with no date. If you want calm water and almost no logistics, Grand Cayman or Turks and Caicos are simpler, though far more expensive.

Safety is a real factor. The State Department's June 23, 2026 advisory keeps Jamaica at Level 2 and lists Level 3 areas including parts of Montego Bay such as Flankers, Mount Salem and Norwood, and Savanna-la-Mar in Westmoreland. Resort areas are not on that list, but read it before you plan independent outings.

Where to stay: Negril, Ocho Rios or Montego Bay

  • Negril has the best beach and the sunset cliffs. Royalton Negril, Royalton Hideaway Negril and Grand Lido Negril reopened in late August 2026, according to trade reports. A few small properties, including Rum Runners Resort and Kibo Hotel, were still listed closed by the Tourist Board.
  • Ocho Rios is the base for Dunn's River Falls and Mystic Mountain. Bahia Principe Grand Jamaica is due back on December 1, 2026.
  • Montego Bay is closest to the airport and cheapest. On January 13, 2027 the lowest totals with taxes were Mobay Kotch at $53, Big Apple Hotel at $68 and Verney House Resort at $81. In July, Montego Bay Club Resort was $165. Royalton Blue Waters reopened on September 15, 2026.
  • The South Coast is the quietest. Sandals South Coast is due back on November 18, 2026.

Beaches: one great one, several small ones

Seven Mile Beach in Negril is the reason to come for sand. It is long, flat and usually calm, with shallow water that suits children. In Montego Bay, Doctor's Cave Bathing Club is open; it is a small, managed beach club on the Hip Strip. Much of the rest of the north coast is resort frontage or narrow coves.

Jamaica's beaches are good, not the best in the region. If beach quality decides your trip, Turks and Caicos and Exuma score higher. We give Jamaica 7.5 out of 10 for beaches.

Things to do, and what has reopened

The Tourist Board's attractions list, checked October 20, 2026, shows these as open: Dunn's River Falls, Mystic Mountain, Rick's Cafe in Negril, Rose Hall Great House, Doctor's Cave Bathing Club, YS Falls, the Black River Safari, Rio Grande rafting near Port Antonio, Reach Falls and the Bob Marley Museum in Kingston.

It lists these as closed: Rafting on the Martha Brae, Greenwood Great House, Roaring River Park and Cave, Dolphin Cove at Lucea, Chukka White River Valley, the Negril Craft Market and a long list of Montego Bay boat, fishing and water-sports operators. Ask your tour company to confirm before you pay.

Even with gaps, this is the strongest day-trip island in our Caribbean set. We score things to do 8.5 out of 10, half a point below what a fully recovered Jamaica would earn.

When to go

The driest, busiest months run from mid-December to April, with steady trade winds on the north coast. Summer is hotter and more humid, with short afternoon showers. Our month-by-month table below shows the numbers.

The Atlantic hurricane season runs June 1 to November 30, and NOAA's National Hurricane Center puts the peak around September 10. Melissa itself arrived in late October, so do not treat October as safe. Buy travel insurance that covers storms if you book for August to November. Our hurricane season guide explains the month-by-month risk.

Getting there from the US

Fly into Sangster International (MBJ) in Montego Bay. Wikipedia's airline table lists nonstops this winter from 24 US airports, including Atlanta, Charlotte, Chicago O'Hare and Midway, Dallas/Fort Worth, Denver, Fort Lauderdale, Houston (both airports), Miami, New York JFK, Newark, Orlando, Philadelphia and Washington Dulles. Boston, Detroit, Minneapolis, St. Louis, Kansas City, Nashville and Milwaukee are seasonal. Breeze starts Tampa on December 19, 2026.

You need a passport. US citizens need no visa for stays of 90 days or less, and must complete Jamaica's online C5 immigration and customs declaration before the flight. Our passport guide covers the islands that skip that step.

What a trip costs

Rooms are cheap if you do not need a beachfront all-inclusive. On Google Hotels, with taxes and fees in, the cheapest 3-star-rated room in Montego Bay was $53 on January 13, 2027 and $53 on July 14, 2027. That is among the lowest January prices in our Caribbean ranking, though the cheapest rooms are small guesthouse-style properties, not beach resorts.

All-inclusive prices are another market, and we did not price them. Budget for tours separately, since the big day trips are outside the resort fence.

Frequently asked questions

Is Jamaica open after Hurricane Melissa?

Yes. The Jamaica Tourist Board says Sangster, Norman Manley and Ian Fleming airports and the seaports are fully operating, and most major attractions are open. Some resorts are still closed: its list shows seven large Montego Bay properties reopening in 2027 and several others reopening between November 18 and December 18, 2026.

Is it safe to travel to Jamaica right now?

The US State Department rates Jamaica Level 2, exercise increased caution, for crime and health risks, in an advisory issued June 23, 2026. It names Level 3 neighborhoods in several parishes, including parts of Montego Bay. The same update removed the natural-disaster risk indicator.

Which part of Jamaica is best to stay in?

Negril for the beach, Ocho Rios for waterfalls and day trips, Montego Bay for the shortest airport transfer and the cheapest rooms. This winter, Negril has the fewest closures among the big resort areas.

Do US citizens need a passport for Jamaica?

Yes. You need a passport valid for entry and exit. No visa is required for stays of 90 days or less, and you should complete the online C5 form before you fly.

Can I bring my dog to Jamaica?

It is hard. USDA guidance requires an import permit, a microchip, a passing rabies titer test taken at least 3 months before entry, a list of other tests, arrival at Kingston only and at least 14 days of quarantine. It is rarely worth it for a vacation.
