Turks and Caicos (Providenciales)

Atlantic, southeast of Bahamas Nonstop from 19 US airports Calm, shallow Grace Bay

Turks and Caicos is not technically in the Caribbean Sea; it sits in the Atlantic southeast of the Bahamas. Almost every visitor stays on Providenciales, and almost every one of them is there for Grace Bay: a long, soft beach with calm, shallow water protected by an offshore reef.

We give it 9.5 out of 10 for beaches, the highest score in our Caribbean group. We give it 5 for things to do. It is also expensive: on Google Hotels, the cheapest room rated 3 stars or better in Grace Bay was $343 a night with taxes on January 13, 2027. Know one rule before you pack: the State Department warns that a single forgotten bullet in your luggage can bring a prison sentence of 12 years or more.

Weather month by month

Best months by our weather score: March, April, December. Daytime highs, rain and sunshine are 2016–2025 averages at Providenciales International Airport (Open-Meteo historical weather archive); sea temperatures are 2022–2025 averages for the nearest sea area (Open-Meteo marine archive). Months marked in the storm row fall in the Atlantic hurricane season (June 1 to November 30); the score takes that risk into account.

Who it is for, and who should skip it

It suits couples and families who want to do very little, very well. The water at Grace Bay, Taylor Bay and Sapodilla Bay is usually flat and clear, which makes it easy with young children.

Skip it if you get restless. Providenciales is low and dry, with no rainforest, waterfalls or old town. Jamaica has far more to explore, and Nassau has more to do and cheaper beds. Budget travelers will struggle here.

Where to stay

  • Grace Bay holds most hotels, restaurants and shops. With taxes, the cheapest 3-star-rated rooms on January 13, 2027 were The Grace Bay Suites at $343 and Ports of Call Resort at $462; The Sands at Grace Bay was $634. On July 14, 2027 the Grace Bay Suites was $235, Sibonne Beach Hotel $327 and Ports of Call $328.
  • Long Bay, on the southeast shore, is windier and quieter, with villas and the island's kiteboarding beach.
  • Chalk Sound and Sapodilla Bay, in the southwest, are villa country near the calmest shallow beaches.

Many visitors rent a condo or villa with a kitchen to cut costs.

Beaches

Grace Bay is the headline: soft, pale sand and water that is usually calm and shallow near shore. It is long enough that it rarely feels full. For snorkeling straight from the sand, Bight Reef (also called Coral Gardens) sits at the western end of Grace Bay.

Taylor Bay and Sapodilla Bay on the southwest coast stay knee-deep a long way out, the best places on the island for toddlers. Long Bay is shallow too but often windy, which is why kiteboarders use it. That depth of choice is why Providenciales scores 9.5, not 10: everything is excellent, but it is one small island's worth of beaches.

Things to do

Most activities are on the water. Boat trips run to Iguana Island (Little Water Cay), home to the protected rock iguana, and through the turquoise lagoon of Chalk Sound National Park. Snorkel and dive boats visit the reef wall, and Long Bay is a good place to learn kiteboarding.

For history, you need a day trip to Grand Turk, the capital island and cruise port. On land in Providenciales there is little beyond restaurants and shops, so we score things to do 5 out of 10: a beach plus a handful of excursions. Prices vary by operator and we did not verify them.

Crowds: cruise ships go to Grand Turk, not here

The Turks and Caicos statistics department counted 640,748 stayover visitors in 2025 and 1,312,246 cruise passengers. Those cruise passengers land at Grand Turk. Providenciales has no cruise pier, so Grace Bay never fills with day crowds the way Nassau or Cozumel can.

The busiest month in 2025 was March, with 77,124 stayovers; the quietest was September, with 18,795. Stayovers in the first half of 2026 ran ahead of 2025 every month.

When to go

The dry season, roughly December to April, is the most popular and the most expensive. Summer is hotter, with lighter winds and lower prices: our hotel was about 31% cheaper in July. See the climate table below for each month.

The islands lie in the Atlantic hurricane belt, where the season runs June 1 to November 30, peaking around September 10 according to NOAA's National Hurricane Center. Our hurricane guide explains the risk by month.

Getting there, entry rules and departure charges

Fly into Providenciales (PLS), which the Airports Authority now calls Howard Hamilton International Airport. Wikipedia's airline table lists year-round nonstops from Atlanta, Charlotte, Miami, New York JFK, Newark, Orlando and Washington Dulles, and seasonal flights from Boston, Chicago, Dallas/Fort Worth, Detroit, Houston, Minneapolis and Philadelphia. BermudAir adds Baltimore, Boston, Fort Lauderdale, Newark, Raleigh/Durham and St. Petersburg/Clearwater this winter.

You need a passport. The State Department asks for 3 months' validity beyond departure and 2 blank pages; the tourist board's FAQ says 6 months, so travel with at least 6. No visa is needed for 90 days or less. Check every bag for ammunition: it is illegal, and police search at departure.

The Airports Authority's published charges include a $29 departure tax, a $3 terminal fee, an $8 security charge and a $20 development charge, collected by the airline in your fare. We could not confirm from an official page whether the government changed these in 2025 or 2026.

What a trip costs

Start with the room. With taxes and fees, the cheapest 3-star-rated room in Grace Bay was $343 on January 13, 2027 and $235 on July 14, 2027. The next-cheapest options cost $100 to $300 more in January. A five-night winter stay at the cheapest hotel comes to about $1,715 before food, tours or a rental car. A condo with a kitchen is the usual way to cut the daily bill.

Add the airport charges listed by the Airports Authority, $60 a person in total, though they are normally inside your airfare. If price matters, compare Grand Cayman, which costs about the same, with our cheap islands ranking before you commit.
