Ibiza
Ibiza is a sixth the size of Mallorca, but it behaves like two islands. The south, around Ibiza Town, Platja d'en Bossa and Sant Antoni, is the club and beach-bar island the world knows. The north, around Santa Eulària, Sant Joan and Portinatx, is pine hills, farmhouse hotels and small coves.
It is expensive in summer and shuttered in winter. On July 14, 2027, the cheapest 3-star-or-better hotel in Ibiza Town was $315 a night on Booking.com; on January 13, 2027, Kayak found only 11 hotels of 3 stars or more open in town, the cheapest at $98. IBESTAT counted 3,727,861 tourists for Ibiza and Formentera together in 2025; it does not publish Ibiza alone.

Where Ibiza ranks
Who Ibiza is for, and who should skip it
Ibiza suits couples and groups of adult friends. The nightlife is the reason most people come, but the north coast and Formentera make a good slow week for couples who never set foot in a club. Solo travelers do well here in summer: it is social, and buses link the main towns.
Skip it with small children unless you base yourself in the north or in a family resort, and skip it as a budget island. If you want more beaches, mountains and a real city for the same flight, Mallorca is the better all-rounder. If you want Greek-style party nights with whitewashed villages, compare Mykonos.
Where to stay: Ibiza Town, Sant Antoni or the north
- Ibiza Town (Eivissa). The capital, with the walled old town of Dalt Vila, the port, restaurants and the ferries to Formentera. The base for a first visit. Our prices: $98 at Hotel Vibra Vila (3 stars) on Kayak for January 13, 2027, and $315 at Hotel Royal Plaza (4 stars) on Booking.com for July 14, 2027, both with taxes.
- Platja d'en Bossa. The long beach south of town, next to the big clubs. Loud by design.
- Sant Antoni. The west-coast town of sunset bars and package hotels, close to Cala Comte and Cala Bassa.
- Santa Eulària and the north. Quieter towns, rural hotels and coves. You will want a car.
Beaches: coves, salt flats and Formentera
Ibiza's beaches are very good, mostly small and sandy, and busy in season. The best water is in the coves, where seagrass meadows of Posidonia keep the sea clear and pale. Posidonia is part of the island's UNESCO World Heritage listing, Ibiza, Biodiversity and Culture.
- Cala Comte and Cala Bassa (west): shallow turquoise water and sunset views. Rocky ledges at Cala Comte, more sand at Cala Bassa.
- Ses Salines (south): a long sandy beach inside the salt-flats nature park, with beach clubs at one end.
- Cala Salada (northwest): a small cove with pines down to the sand. Arrive early in summer.
- Cala Llonga and Cala Nova (east): a sheltered sandy bay that suits families, and a more open beach that can get waves.
- Formentera, the next island south: daily ferries from Ibiza Town to beaches like Ses Illetes, the long sand spit most visitors come for.
Things to do beyond the clubs
- Dalt Vila, the hilltop old town of Ibiza Town. Its Renaissance walls are part of the UNESCO listing, along with the Phoenician settlement at Sa Caleta.
- Formentera day trip by ferry from Ibiza Town, with a rented bike or scooter on arrival.
- Sunsets in Sant Antoni and at Cala Comte.
- The clubs around Platja d'en Bossa and Sant Antoni, from late spring to early fall. Check opening parties and closing dates before you book.
- Hippie markets and north-coast villages such as Sant Joan and Santa Gertrudis.
- Boat trips to the coves and to Es Vedrà, the rock islet off the southwest coast.
Beyond that list, Ibiza is a beach-and-scene island. Five days covers it; a week works if you add Formentera.
When to go
The season is short and sharp. June and September give warm sea, open clubs and fewer people than July and August. May and October are calm and cheaper, with some places still closed. From November to April the island is quiet: IBESTAT's December 2025 count was 28,937 tourists for Ibiza and Formentera, against 3.7 million for the year. The climate table on this page shows the sea and air through the year.
There is no hurricane season. Rare Mediterranean cyclones (medicanes) peak from September to January; Medicane Blas struck the Balearics in November 2021. See our storm seasons guide for the comparison with the Caribbean.
Getting there from the US
In 2026 no airline flies nonstop from the US to Ibiza (IBZ); you connect in Madrid, Barcelona or another European hub, or fly into Palma and take a short hop. That changes next summer: United starts Newark-Ibiza on May 31, 2027, four times a week on an Airbus A321XLR, according to Aeroroutes and the Wikipedia airport table. It will be the first US nonstop to the island.
Entry is the same as the rest of Spain. US citizens need a passport valid at least 3 months beyond departure from the Schengen area, no visa for under 90 days. The EU Entry/Exit System takes fingerprints and a photo at the border. ETIAS is not yet running, and no start date has been set; see our passport rules guide.
What a trip costs
Hotels: $98 in mid-January (Kayak) and $315 in mid-July (Booking.com) for the cheapest 3-star-or-better double in Ibiza Town. July is more than double what we found in Palma on the same night.
The Balearic sustainable tourism tax applies per person per night for guests 16 and older: from May to October, $4.49 (€4) at 5-star and 4-star superior hotels, $3.37 (€3) at 4-star and 3-star superior, $2.25 (€2) at 1- to 3-star hotels and holiday rentals, and $1.12 (€1) at hostels and campsites. From November to April it is 75% less, and from the ninth night it is halved. A proposed summer increase did not pass in 2026.
Club entry, beach-club beds and taxis add up fast in August. We did not price them, because they change week to week; check the venue before you go.

Frequently asked questions
Can you fly direct from the US to Ibiza?
Not in 2026. United starts the first US nonstop, Newark to Ibiza, on May 31, 2027, four times a week. Until then, connect in Madrid, Barcelona or another European city.
Is Ibiza only for partying?
No. The north coast around Santa Eulària and Sant Joan is quiet, with coves and rural hotels, and Dalt Vila in Ibiza Town is a UNESCO-listed old town. But the island's summer prices are set by the club season.
When does Ibiza's season start and end?
Roughly May to October. In January, Kayak showed only 11 hotels of 3 stars or more open in Ibiza Town for our test date, and IBESTAT counted under 29,000 tourists for Ibiza and Formentera in December 2025.
How much is the tourist tax in Ibiza?
It is the Balearic sustainable tourism tax: $1.12 to $4.49 (€1 to €4) per person per night from May to October depending on hotel category, 75% less from November to April, and free for under-16s.
Is Ibiza or Mallorca better for a first trip?
Mallorca, for most Americans: more beaches, a real city, mountains, a Newark nonstop and lower summer prices. Ibiza wins if nightlife or a short, social beach trip is the point. Compare on our Europe island ranking.
