Mykonos
Mykonos is small, dry and built for visitors. Its town, called Chora, is a maze of white lanes on the harbor, and the south coast is a chain of sandy bays with sunbeds, tavernas and beach clubs. ELSTAT counted 741,548 arrivals in hotels, short-stay rentals and campsites on the island in 2025, and the Hellenic Ports Association logged 1,222,748 cruise passengers, more than any other Greek port except Piraeus.
That popularity sets the price. The cheapest 3-star room in town on Kayak for July 14, 2027 was $198. In return you get some of the best sand in the Cyclades, the sacred island of Delos a short boat ride away, and a night scene that runs until sunrise. If you want the Cyclades without the bill, Paros and Naxos are a short ferry ride south.

Where Mykonos ranks
Who Mykonos suits, and who should skip it
Mykonos suits adults who want to walk from a hotel to dinner, take a bus to the beach and stay out late. Solo travelers do well here: the town is compact, the beach buses run from the town bus stations, and the crowd is social. It has long been one of Greece's most LGBTQ-friendly islands.
It suits families less. Prices are high, the party beaches are loud, and the town's lanes are tight. Couples looking for quiet romance often prefer Santorini in shoulder season or Milos.
Where to stay: Chora, Ornos or the beach bays
- Mykonos Town (Chora) puts you near Little Venice, the windmills, the ferry port and the bus stations. On Kayak, the cheapest room rated 3 stars or better within about a mile of the center was $54 for January 13, 2027 and $198 for July 14, 2027, taxes and fees in. A $51 January rate was a member-only price, so we did not count it.
- Ornos, just south of town, has a sheltered sandy bay and boats to the other beaches. It is the easiest base with children.
- Platis Gialos and Psarou are resort bays with sunbeds in rows and higher-end hotels.
You do not need a car if you stay in town or on a bus-served bay. Buses link Chora with Ornos, Platis Gialos, Paradise and Kalafatis, and small boats hop between the south coast beaches in summer. A car or scooter helps only for the north coast and Ano Mera, and parking near the old town is hard.
Winter supply drops sharply. Kayak listed 173 stays for January 13 against 403 for July 14, because many Cycladic hotels close from November to April.
Beaches: sheltered south, windy north
The rule on Mykonos is simple. The south coast faces away from the summer north wind and is where the calm, sandy beaches are. The north coast takes the wind head on.
- Ornos and Agios Ioannis: calm, shallow sand close to town, good for children.
- Psarou and Platis Gialos: golden sand, gentle water, wall-to-wall sunbeds.
- Paradise and Super Paradise: the party beaches, with DJs from the afternoon.
- Elia and Kalafatis: longer, a bit calmer, with water sports at Kalafatis.
- Agios Sostis and Ftelia on the north coast: undeveloped, and windy; Ftelia is a windsurf spot.
Our score is 7.5 out of 10: real sand and clear water, held back by crowds, paid sunbeds and wind.
Things to do: Delos first
Delos, the mythical birthplace of Apollo and a whole ancient city of temples, houses and mosaics, is the reason to give Mykonos an extra day. The Delos Tours boat schedule for 2026 lists a return fare of $28 (€25) from the Old Port, plus site entry of $22 (€20) per person. A guided half-day tour costs $89 (€79). Go on the first boat; there is almost no shade on the island.
- Little Venice and the windmills: the sunset walk everyone does, best on a weekday.
- Panagia Paraportiani: a whitewashed church built from several chapels, in the old Kastro quarter.
- Ano Mera: the inland village with the Tourliani monastery and a quieter square.
- Armenistis lighthouse on the northwest tip for views toward Tinos.
- Nightlife: bars in Little Venice and clubs near Paradise beach.
When to go
June and September give you warm sea, open beach clubs and lower prices than July and August. The meltemi, a strong dry north wind, blows from about mid-May to mid-September and can make the north beaches unusable and the fast ferries rough. From November to March the island is quiet, many hotels and clubs close, and the Delos boats stop after November 30. The monthly table below shows the sea and air; our June ranking compares the alternatives.
Getting there from the US, and what you need
No airline flies nonstop from the US to Mykonos (JMK). Fly to Athens, where nonstops arrive from New York JFK and Newark, and seasonally from Atlanta, Boston, Charlotte, Chicago, Dallas/Fort Worth, Philadelphia and Washington Dulles. Aegean flies Athens to Mykonos year-round, but note that Fraport Greece is closing the Mykonos runway for repairs every Thursday from November 19, 2026 to March 18, 2027, except over the holidays; use the ferry or fly on another day. Detroit (Delta, from June 8, 2027) and Seattle (Alaska, from May 12, 2027) join the Athens list next summer.
Ferries are often easier than a connection. From Rafina, closer to Athens airport, Fast Ferries and Golden Star run daily all year, from about 2 hours to 4 hours 30 minutes, with fares from $40 (€35.50). From Piraeus, Blue Star Ferries takes about 4 hours 35 minutes from $48 (€43), and Seajets about 2 hours 40 minutes from $98 (€87.70), per Ferryhopper.
US citizens need a passport valid three months past the day you leave the Schengen area; no visa for stays up to 90 days. The EU Entry/Exit System takes fingerprints and a photo on first entry. ETIAS is not yet in force. See our passport guide.
What a trip costs, and the cruise fee
Plan around the July floor of $198 a night in town, against $54 in January. Hotels also collect Greece's climate resilience fee at checkout: from April to October, $5.60 (€5) a night at a 3-star, $11.20 (€10) at a 4-star and $16.80 (€15) at a 5-star, and much less from November to March.
If you arrive by cruise ship, Mykonos and Santorini carry Greece's highest landing fee: $22 (€20) per passenger from June 1 to September 30, $13 (€12) in April, May and October, and $4.50 (€4) in winter. Lines usually add it to your bill.
