For a couple, the Canaries are less about the beach than about what you do between swims: long lunches, wine, volcano landscapes, an old town for an evening walk. The sea is cool in winter and the main resort coasts are busy, so the island you pick shapes the trip more than the hotel does.
This ranking starts from each island's overall score and adds points where our island page says it suits couples. Only one of the four carries that tag: Lanzarote, which moves from third in our main ranking to first here. Its draw is the work of the artist César Manrique, the vineyards dug into black ash at La Geria and the calm coves near Playa Blanca. Tenerife and Gran Canaria have more to do and Fuerteventura has more empty sand. The cards explain the trade-offs.
At a glance
- Best for couples
- Lanzarote: Manrique sites, La Geria wine country, the Papagayo coves and quiet Playa Blanca
- Most to do for two
- Tenerife: Teide, La Laguna, the north coast towns and a ferry to La Gomera
- Best city and nightlife
- Gran Canaria, for Las Palmas and the bars of Playa del Inglés
- Emptiest beaches
- Fuerteventura, with the most room to breathe of the four
- Best two-island trip
- Lanzarote and Fuerteventura, linked by ferry from Playa Blanca to Corralejo
How this couples ranking works
Each island starts from its overall score, built from six factors: weather, beaches, things to do, getting there from the US, value and room to breathe. Islands that our island page tags for couples (romance, a honeymoon, a slow trip for two) get 1.5 extra points. The tag is an editorial call, with the reason written on each island page. The full method is in how we score islands.
Lanzarote is the only one of the four tagged for couples. Tenerife is tagged for families, teens, kids and budget travelers; Gran Canaria for families and solo travelers; Fuerteventura for teens and budget travelers. Without the tag, the order would match our main Canary Islands ranking, where Lanzarote is third.
The ferry between Playa Blanca on Lanzarote and Corralejo on Fuerteventura makes these two an easy pair: Lanzarote for the sights and the wine, Fuerteventura for the beaches. Lanzarote also has the ferry from Órzola to La Graciosa, a small island of sand tracks and empty beaches, for a day trip. From Tenerife, boats leave Los Cristianos for La Gomera. All of these are day-trip distances, so you can add a second island without changing hotels.
What a Canary honeymoon is, and is not
The Canaries are a good fit for a couple who want mild weather, food, wine and landscapes in Europe. They are not a tropical honeymoon. In our climate data the sea is at its coolest in late winter, around 66°F (19°C) off Lanzarote and Fuerteventura in February, and it peaks from August to October, at 73 to 77°F (23 to 25°C) depending on the island. The main resort coasts are busy, and Lanzarote and Fuerteventura are often windy.
If warm water and an overwater villa are the point, look at our best islands for a honeymoon ranking. If you want hiking and drama rather than sand, Madeira, the Portuguese island to the north, scores 9 for things to do and had a seasonal summer nonstop from Newark in 2026, something no Canary Island has.
What it costs, and getting there
Our hotel checks, for the cheapest 3-star-or-better double in each main resort area, 2 adults, taxes in, January 13 and July 14, 2027: Lanzarote (Puerto del Carmen) $169 and $151, Gran Canaria (Playa del Inglés) $161 and $139, Tenerife (Los Cristianos and Playa de las Américas) $124 and $92, Fuerteventura (Corralejo) $107 and $93. We found no regional tourist tax in the Canaries as of October 20, 2026. Timanfaya National Park on Lanzarote is $34 (€30) per adult.
There is no US nonstop to the Canaries since United ended Newark-Tenerife on May 2, 2025; connect in Madrid, Barcelona, Lisbon or another European hub. A US passport must be valid at least 3 months beyond departure. Since April 10, 2026 the EU's Entry/Exit System records fingerprints and a photo at the border, and ETIAS is not yet in operation.
