Fuerteventura
Fuerteventura is the beach island of the Canaries. It has the longest stretches of sand in the group: the dunes behind Corralejo in the north, the lagoon at Sotavento on the southeast coast and the wild, empty Cofete on the far southwest. It is also windy for much of the year, which is why kitesurfers and windsurfers come back season after season.
It is growing fast: 2.85 million tourists stayed on the island in 2025, up more than 7% on 2024, the biggest rise of the four main islands, according to the Canary Islands statistics office (ISTAC). Rooms are still cheap. We found $107 for a January night and $93 in July in Corralejo, taxes included. For Americans the usual caveats apply: no nonstop flight, and a sea that is cool in winter.

Where Fuerteventura ranks
Who Fuerteventura is for, and who should skip it
Come for sand, wind and water sports. Teens who want surf or kite lessons, couples who want long beach walks and anyone on a budget will find it good value. Families can do well in Corralejo or at El Cotillo, where the lagoon beaches are calmer.
Skip it if you get bored after two beach days. Beyond the coast the island is dry and sparse, with a small old capital, a few viewpoints and not much else. For sights, Lanzarote is a short ferry away and Tenerife has far more. Fuerteventura shares the islands' housing debate too: it holds 13.7% of the 47,117 vacation homes ISTAC counted across the Canaries in December 2025.
Where to stay, with the prices we found
- Corralejo (north). The liveliest town, next to the dunes and the ferries to Lanzarote and Lobos. On Kayak, the cheapest 3-star-or-better hotel was $107 for Wednesday, January 13, 2027 and $93 for Wednesday, July 14, 2027, both at Mision Costa, for 2 adults with taxes and fees included. Four-star hotels started at $172 on the January search.
- El Cotillo (northwest). A fishing village with lagoon beaches and surf breaks nearby. Small and quiet.
- Caleta de Fuste (east). A sheltered bay close to the airport, popular with families.
- Costa Calma and Morro Jable (south). Closest to Sotavento and the long southern beaches, with big all-inclusive resorts.
Beaches: long, sandy and often windy
- Grandes Playas de Corralejo: a long run of white sand in front of the dune park. Beautiful, but exposed to wind and currents on many days.
- El Cotillo lagoons: small coves with shallow, sheltered water at low tide. The best bet with young children.
- Sotavento: a huge tidal lagoon and sandbar on the southeast coast, a classic kitesurfing spot. Shallow at low tide, windy most afternoons.
- Caleta de Fuste: a calm, horseshoe bay with gentle water.
- Cofete: a remote beach under mountains, reached by a long dirt road. Strong surf and currents. This is for looking, not swimming.
We score Fuerteventura's beaches an 8: the best sand in the Canaries, held back from a higher score by wind, currents and a cool winter sea.
Things to do
- Kitesurfing, windsurfing and surfing lessons in Corralejo, El Cotillo and Sotavento. The wind is the island's main attraction after the sand.
- Corralejo dunes, a protected natural park you can walk into from town.
- Isla de Lobos, a small island off Corralejo reached by a short ferry, for a walk and a swim. Access is managed by the island council, so check its current rules before you go.
- Betancuria, the old inland capital, and the sea caves at Ajuy on the west coast.
- A day in Lanzarote by ferry from Corralejo for the volcano park and Manrique sites.
We could not confirm official 2026 prices for Lobos or the island's paid sites, so none are listed. That short list is why things to do score only a 5.5: the beach plus a handful of excursions.
When to go
Fuerteventura is one of the driest islands in the Canaries, with little rain in any month and most of it in late autumn and early winter. Summer is the windiest season, which is great for kitesurfing and hard on beach umbrellas; winter is calmer and is the high season for European visitors. The sea is coolest in late winter and warmest from late summer into autumn. The 12-month climate table on this page has the numbers.
Hurricanes do not normally reach the Canaries. The exception that proves the point came in September 2022, when the remnants of Hermine brought record rain to the islands, according to the National Hurricane Center. See our storm-season guide.
Getting there from the US, and entry rules
Fuerteventura Airport (FUE) is on the east coast near Puerto del Rosario. It has no nonstop flights from the US or Canada, so you connect in Madrid, Barcelona, Lisbon or another European hub. Many visitors pair it with Lanzarote: the ferry runs from Corralejo to Playa Blanca.
As part of Spain and the Schengen area, Fuerteventura requires a US passport valid for at least 3 months beyond departure. No visa is needed for up to 90 days in any 180-day period. The EU Entry/Exit System, fully running since April 10, 2026, records your fingerprints and photo. ETIAS is not yet in operation; its fee will be $22 (€20). Read our passport rules guide.
What a trip costs
Fuerteventura had the cheapest rooms of the four Canary Islands we priced: $107 in January and $93 in July in Corralejo, taxes included. Kite and surf schools set their own prices, so compare a few before you book. We found no regional tourist tax in force in the Canaries as of October 20, 2026.
Dogs from the US enter under the standard EU rules: microchip, rabies vaccine at least 21 days before travel and a USDA-endorsed health certificate, with no quarantine. See where it lands on our Canary Islands ranking and our list of cheap islands to visit.
Tickets and tours you can book

Frequently asked questions
Is Fuerteventura too windy?
It can be. The trade winds blow hard here, especially in summer, which is why the island is a kitesurfing center. For calmer beach days, use sheltered spots like Caleta de Fuste or the El Cotillo lagoons, and plan swims for mornings.
Is Fuerteventura or Lanzarote better?
Fuerteventura has the better and emptier beaches and cheaper rooms on our dates. Lanzarote has more to see. Corralejo and Playa Blanca are linked by ferry, so you can do both in one trip.
Where should I stay in Fuerteventura?
Corralejo for restaurants, the dunes and ferries; El Cotillo for a quiet village with lagoon beaches; Caleta de Fuste for a calm bay near the airport; Costa Calma or Morro Jable for the long southern beaches.
Can you swim at Cofete beach?
Swimming there is risky because of strong surf and currents, and the beach is remote with no services. Go for the view and the walk, and swim at a sheltered beach instead.
How do you get to Fuerteventura from the US?
There is no nonstop flight. Fly to Madrid, Barcelona or Lisbon and connect to Fuerteventura Airport, or fly to Lanzarote and take the ferry from Playa Blanca to Corralejo.
