Sicily
Sicily is the island to pick when the beach is not the main event. In one trip you can see Greek temples at Agrigento, the Arab-Norman churches of Palermo and Monreale, the old island town of Ortigia in Siracusa, the hill town of Taormina and the summit country of Mount Etna, an active volcano.
It is also big: 9,927 square miles (25,711 km²), the largest island in the Mediterranean and more than seven times the size of Mallorca. Plan on two or three bases, not one, and a car. The regional tourism observatory counted 5,801,463 arrivals in hotels and other licensed accommodation in 2024, plus 1,336,676 in short-term rentals counted separately. Americans were the second-largest foreign market, with 379,829 arrivals.

Where Sicily ranks
Who Sicily is for, and who should skip it
Sicily suits couples who want long lunches and old towns, families with teens who will climb a volcano and swim off rocks, and anyone who has done mainland Italy and wants the next step. It rewards a rental car and a loose plan.
Skip it if you want soft sand outside your hotel every day. Many beaches are pebble or rock, the best sandy ones are spread around the coast, and in August they are full. For a beach-first Italian island, Sardinia is the better choice. For an easier, more compact Mediterranean trip, see Mallorca.
Where to stay: three corners of the island
- Taormina and the east coast. The classic first base: the Greek theater, sea views, Etna day trips, and Catania airport within reach. Our prices on Booking.com: $116 at Taormina Park Hotel (4 stars) for January 13, 2027, and $140 at Hotel Baia delle Sirene (3 stars) on the shore at Mazzarò for July 14, 2027, taxes in. In January only six hotels of 3 stars or more showed up in Taormina itself; many close in winter.
- Siracusa (Ortigia) and the southeast. A walkable island old town, with the baroque towns of Noto, Modica and Ragusa and the Vendicari reserve nearby.
- Palermo and the northwest. The capital's markets, churches and street food, Monreale up the hill, Cefalù along the coast and San Vito Lo Capo to the west.
- Agrigento works as one night on the drive between east and west, for the Valley of the Temples at opening time.
Beaches: good, but spread out
Sicily's beaches are good with caveats. The best sand is far apart, many town beaches are pebble or rock, and the swimming season is roughly June to early October.
- San Vito Lo Capo (northwest): a long, pale sand bay with shallow water, the island's best family beach.
- Mondello (Palermo): the city's sandy bay, calm and shallow, very busy on summer weekends.
- Isola Bella and Mazzarò (Taormina): small pebble beaches with clear water, below the town.
- Cefalù: a sandy town beach under the cathedral.
- Vendicari and Marzamemi (southeast): wild sand coves in a nature reserve, and a fishing village with beaches nearby.
- Scala dei Turchi (near Agrigento): the white marl cliff is a sight to photograph more than a beach day.
Things to do: a week is not enough
- Mount Etna. Guided trips go up the south and north flanks; how high you can go depends on current activity and rules.
- Valley of the Temples, Agrigento. A ridge of Greek temples, best at opening time or late afternoon in summer.
- Palermo and Monreale. The Palatine Chapel, the cathedral, the markets of Ballarò and the Vucciria, and the mosaics of Monreale cathedral.
- Siracusa. The Greek theater and Neapolis park, and the old town of Ortigia.
- The Val di Noto. Rebuilt baroque towns: Noto, Modica, Ragusa Ibla.
- The Aeolian Islands. Boats from Milazzo to Lipari, Vulcano and Stromboli.
- Food. Arancini, granita with brioche, cannoli, swordfish and Etna and Marsala wines.
When to go, and the Etna factor
May, June, September and early October are the best months: warm enough to swim from June, and cooler for sightseeing than July and August, when the interior bakes. Winter is mild on the coast and fine for cities and ruins, but it is not a beach season. The climate table on this page has the month-by-month numbers.
Etna's eruptions can close Catania airport. Ash closed it on July 4, 2024 and August 15, 2024, and in August 2026 an eruptive phase forced hundreds of flights to be cancelled or rerouted until the airport resumed operations on August 15, 2026. Closures usually last a day or a few days. The US State Department warns Sicily travelers to expect airport closures during volcanic activity, so book flexible fares and keep Palermo as a backup.
There is no hurricane season. Rare Mediterranean cyclones peak from September to January; Medicane Qëndresa crossed Siracusa in November 2014. Our storm seasons guide compares regions.
Getting there from the US
The main gateway is Catania (CTA). Delta flies daily from New York JFK on a Boeing 767-300; in the 2026/27 season the route runs into winter, pausing only from early January to the end of February and resuming in March 2027. United adds Newark-Catania from May 28, 2027, four times a week. United also flew Newark-Palermo three times a week from May 22 to December 17, 2026. From elsewhere in the US, connect in Rome, Milan or another European hub.
US citizens need a passport valid at least 3 months beyond departure from the Schengen area, with two blank pages for Italy, and no visa for stays under 90 days. The EU Entry/Exit System registers fingerprints and a photo at the border. ETIAS is not yet in operation and has no start date. See our passport rules guide.
What a trip costs
Hotels in Taormina were $116 in mid-January and $140 in mid-July for the cheapest 3-star-or-better rooms, taxes included, which makes Sicily cheaper in summer than Ibiza on the same night. Italian towns charge their own tourist tax per person per night, collected by the hotel; the amount varies by town and hotel category, so check it on your booking. Budget for a rental car, fuel and paid parking near the old towns, and for site tickets at Agrigento, Siracusa and the Palermo churches.
The cheapest months for hotels are the cool ones, but in January many Taormina hotels are closed, so choice is thin. Palermo and Siracusa are working cities rather than resorts, and make better winter bases.
Tickets and tours you can book

Etna: Guided Summit Hiking Tour up to 3400m, Optional Pickup
The guide price is low, but the cable car (54 EUR) or cable car plus 4x4 (82 EUR) is paid on site, so the real cost is closer to $120-155. Weather and eruptions close the summit often.
Rating as shown on GetYourGuide

Catania: Mount Etna Morning/Sunset Tour (Pick Up & Tasting)
Pickup, guide, helmet and tasting are included; the summit and the cable car are not. Good if you want Etna without a high-altitude hike.
Rating as shown on GetYourGuide

The Original Palermo Street Food & Market Tour (All-Inclusive!)
Food and drinks are included; bottled water is not. The booking is non-refundable, which is unusual.

Frequently asked questions
Are there direct flights from the US to Sicily?
Yes. Delta flies New York JFK to Catania daily, with a winter pause from early January to the end of February. United flew Newark to Palermo through December 17, 2026, and adds Newark to Catania from May 28, 2027.
Does Mount Etna close Catania airport?
Sometimes. Ash closed Catania airport on July 4 and August 15, 2024, and for several days in August 2026. Closures are usually short, but keep your plans flexible and consider Palermo as an alternative airport.
How many days do you need in Sicily?
A week covers one or two corners, for example Taormina and Siracusa, or Palermo and the west. Ten days to two weeks lets you loop the island with Agrigento in the middle.
Do you need a car in Sicily?
For anything beyond Palermo, Taormina and Siracusa, yes. Trains and buses link the cities, but the beaches, baroque towns and Etna are much easier by car.
Is Sicily or Sardinia better?
Sicily for history, cities and food. Sardinia for beaches and empty coastline. See our Sardinia page and the Europe ranking.
