Crete

Crete, Greece No US nonstop: fly via Athens 162 miles end to end

Crete is not an island you finish. It runs 162 miles (260 km) from east to west, has mountains high enough to hold snow into spring, and was the heart of the Bronze Age Minoan civilization. ELSTAT counted 6,514,515 arrivals in hotels, short-stay rentals and campsites across the Region of Crete in 2025, more than any other Greek island, and the cruise ports of Heraklion and Souda added 936,590 passengers between them.

The trick is to choose a half. The west, around Chania, has the Venetian harbor, the gorges and the famous beaches of Elafonisi, Balos and Falassarna. The center and east, around Heraklion, has Knossos, the archaeological museum, Spinalonga and the palm beach at Vai. Do one well rather than both badly. For a first Greek trip with less driving, compare Naxos.

Where Crete ranks

Who Crete suits, and who should skip it

Crete suits families and groups with a car and a week, teens who want gorges, snorkeling and boat trips, and anyone who cares about food: the island grows much of what it eats. Resort strips like Platanias and Agia Marina near Chania, or Hersonissos east of Heraklion, make easy family bases. See how it compares in our family ranking.

Skip it for a three-day trip, or if you will not drive. Buses link the north coast towns, but the best beaches and villages are a long way from the bus routes.

Where to stay: Chania, Rethymno or Heraklion

  • Chania is the most attractive town and the best base for the west. On Kayak, the cheapest room rated 3 stars or better near the old town was $59 for January 13, 2027 (a 4-star listing) and $112 for July 14, 2027, taxes and fees in.
  • Rethymno, in the middle, has a Venetian fortress, a long town beach and access to both halves.
  • Heraklion is the airport city and the base for Knossos and the museum; nearby Hersonissos and Malia are big resort and party strips.
  • Elounda and Agios Nikolaos in the east hold most of the luxury resorts.

Unlike the Cyclades, Crete does not shut in winter. Kayak listed 357 stays in Chania for January 13 against 388 for July 14.

Beaches: worth the drive

  • Elafonisi, far southwest: a shallow lagoon with pink-tinged sand, wadeable to an islet. Very good for small children; very crowded at midday in summer.
  • Balos, on the Gramvousa peninsula: a turquoise lagoon reached by boat from Kissamos or by a dirt road and a steep walk.
  • Falassarna: a long, open sandy beach on the west coast, known for sunsets; it gets waves when the wind is up.
  • Preveli, on the south coast: a river, a palm grove and a sandy beach at its mouth.
  • Vai, in the far east: sand under the largest natural palm forest in Europe.
  • Matala: a bay under cliffs cut with ancient caves.

Our score is 9 out of 10: several excellent sandy beaches, held back from a 10 only because the best ones are a long drive from the main towns.

Things to do: palaces, towns and gorges

  • Knossos, the largest Minoan palace site, just outside Heraklion. Pair it with the Heraklion Archaeological Museum, which holds the original frescoes and finds.
  • Phaistos in the south, a second palace site with a view over the Messara plain.
  • Chania's old harbor and the Venetian lanes behind it.
  • Spinalonga, a Venetian sea fortress and former leper colony, by boat from Plaka or Elounda.
  • Gorges: Imbros and Aradena are shorter alternatives to Samaria. Samaria Gorge is closed until further notice, according to the park agency NECCA's ticket site on October 20, 2026, pending inspections. Check before you plan around it in 2027.
  • Arkadi Monastery near Rethymno, and the mountain villages and wineries inland.

Food is a reason in itself. Cretan cooking leans on olive oil, wild greens, snails, lamb and soft mizithra cheese, with dakos rusks and raki poured at the end of almost every meal. Village tavernas in the hills behind Chania and Rethymno are the place to eat it.

Our things-to-do score is 9.5 out of 10: easily more than a week of varied days.

When to go

May, June, September and October are the best months: warm enough to swim, cool enough to hike, and less crowded than July and August. Crete also stays open in winter, when Chania and Heraklion work as city breaks. The summer north wind is milder here than in the Cyclades, but the south coast can be gusty. Check the monthly table below, and our October ranking.

Getting there from the US, and what you need

No airline flies nonstop from the US to Heraklion (HER) or Chania. Fly to Athens, which has nonstops from New York JFK and Newark, and seasonally from Atlanta, Boston, Charlotte, Chicago, Dallas/Fort Worth, Philadelphia and Washington Dulles; Detroit (from June 8, 2027) and Seattle (from May 12, 2027) are new for next summer. Short flights from Athens serve both Cretan airports, and many European cities fly direct to Heraklion in season, so a connection via London or Frankfurt also works.

Ferries are a good option because they sail overnight. Piraeus to Heraklion takes as little as 7 hours 50 minutes, with fares from about $37 (€33), on Minoan Lines, Anek, Blue Star and others. Piraeus to Chania runs 1 to 2 times a day in about 8 to 9.5 hours from $42 (€37), with cabins from about $97 (€86), per Ferryhopper.

US citizens need a passport valid three months beyond departure from the Schengen area; no visa for 90 days. The EU Entry/Exit System takes fingerprints and a photo on arrival; ETIAS is not yet in force. See our passport guide.

What a trip costs

The Kayak floor in Chania was $59 in January and $112 in July. Add a rental car, which you will want for most beaches. Hotels collect Greece's climate resilience fee at checkout, per room per night: from April to October, $5.60 (€5) at a 3-star, $11.20 (€10) at a 4-star and $16.80 (€15) at a 5-star; from November to March, $1.70 (€1.50), $3.40 (€3) and $4.50 (€4). Cruise passengers pay a $5.60 (€5) landing fee per port from June to September, less in other months.

Frequently asked questions

How many days do you need in Crete?

At least five for one half of the island, and ten or more to see both. Crete is 162 miles (260 km) long, and the drive from Chania to the far east takes most of a day.

Is Chania or Heraklion better to stay in?

Chania for atmosphere and the western beaches; Heraklion for Knossos, the museum and the east. Many visitors split a week between Chania and Rethymno or Elounda.

Is Samaria Gorge open?

Not as of October 20, 2026. The park agency NECCA says the gorge is closed from both entrances until further notice and will reopen after inspections. Imbros Gorge is a shorter alternative nearby.

Can you get a direct flight from the US to Crete?

No. There are no US nonstops to Heraklion or Chania. Fly to Athens and connect, or route through a European hub with summer flights to Heraklion.

Is Crete good for families?

Yes. Elafonisi and the resort beaches near Chania and Heraklion are shallow and sandy, family hotels are common, and Knossos and Spinalonga work for older children.
