The best Greek island to visit in June

Ranked for June #1: Crete, 8.76/10 Weather 8.3+ on all 8 islands

June may be the easiest month to plan a Greek island trip. The sea has warmed to between 71°F and 75°F (22°C and 24°C), rain has all but stopped, and the July and August peak has not arrived. Every island we rank scores between 8.3 and 9.3 on June weather.

When the weather is that even, the other factors decide. Crete leads because it has the best beaches, the most to do and the warmest June sea. The more useful story is lower down. Corfu, fifth in May, climbs to fourth, because June is one of the driest and sunniest months in the wetter Ionian Sea.

Crete

8.8/10
84°F high 75°F sea 0.4 in rain

Crete leads June with a weather score of 9.3, the best on this list: highs of 84°F (29°C), a 75°F (24°C) sea and about 0.4 inches (10 mm) of rain. Add the highest beach and things-to-do scores in Greece, 9 and 9.5, and nothing catches it. Elafonisi's shallow lagoon is warm enough for small children, though very crowded at midday in summer. A Chania 3-star was $112 for July 14, 2027. Bring a car; Samaria Gorge is closed until further notice.

Rhodes

8.2/10
86°F high 74°F sea 0.4 in rain

Rhodes is second, with a June weather score of 9.2 and the hottest days on the list, 86°F (30°C). The sea is 74°F (24°C). Its value score, 9.6, is the best of the big islands: a 3-star near the Old Town was $96 for July 14, 2027. Beaches at 7 keep it behind Crete. Visit the Lindos acropolis early, and use the sheltered east coast at Tsambika when the summer wind hits the west.

Naxos is third, close behind Rhodes. Its June weather scores 8.9, with highs of 83°F (28°C), a 72°F (22°C) sea and about 0.2 inches (6 mm) of rain. Its own page names June as ideal: warm sea, open tavernas, fewer people. Its beaches, 8.5, are the best in the Cyclades, and Agios Georgios in town stays usable when the wind is up. A town 3-star was $122 for July 14, 2027.

Corfu

8.0/10
83°F high 73°F sea 1.2 in rain

Corfu has one of its best months in June, a weather score of 9.0, and climbs to fourth. Highs reach 83°F (28°C), the sea 73°F (23°C), and rain falls to about 1.2 inches (30 mm). It is greener than the Aegean islands, and its things-to-do score, 8.5, covers the old town, the Achilleion and boat days to Paxos. The catch is the beaches, 7, many of them pebbly. A 3-star near town was $130 for July 14, 2027.

Paros

7.9/10
81°F high 72°F sea 0.2 in rain

Paros slips to fifth in June because it is one of the cooler islands: highs of 81°F (27°C) and a 72°F (22°C) sea give a weather score of 8.8. It is dry, about 0.2 inches (4 mm) of rain. Its value is the draw: $89 for a Parikia 3-star on July 14, 2027, less than half the Mykonos floor. June is the month to hop to Naxos, 50 minutes away, before the meltemi peaks.

Milos

7.6/10
82°F high 73°F sea 0.1 in rain

Milos has a strong June, weather 9.0, with highs of 82°F (28°C), a 73°F (23°C) sea and almost no rain, about 0.1 inches (3 mm). Its own page calls June one of the two best months, when boat tours to Kleftiko run and the wind is calmer. It ranks sixth because rated hotels are scarce and costly: $291 for the cheapest 3-star-or-better in Adamas on July 14, 2027. Unrated studios are cheaper.

Santorini's June weather scores 9.0: highs of 82°F (28°C), a 73°F (23°C) sea and about 0.2 inches (5 mm) of rain. It is seventh because the other half of the score is weak: beaches 5, crowds 1.0 and a conditional verdict. From June 1, cruise passengers pay $22 (€20) to land, and 1,203,052 cruise passengers landed in 2025. Walk the Fira to Oia path early.

Its own page names June as a good month, with beach clubs open and prices below July and August. The July floor in town was $198, the highest here after Milos. Ornos and Psarou on the south coast are sheltered from the north wind.

How the June ranking was made

Each island's June score is 55% June weather (daytime high, sea temperature, rainfall and sunshine for the month) and 45% everything else we score: beaches, things to do, access from the US, hotel value and crowds. A conditional verdict on the island's own page costs 0.4 points of that second half. The method is on how we score islands.

In June the weather half barely separates the islands, a single point from top to bottom. So the ranking here is close to our year-round Greek ranking, with Rhodes and Corfu nudged up by their strong June weather.

June or July?

June, if you can. The sea is 4°F to 5°F cooler than in July on every island here, but the days are almost as long and the crowds smaller. Our island pages for Naxos, Paros, Milos and Mykonos all name June and September as the best months. The meltemi, the Aegean's strong dry north wind, blows from about mid-May to mid-September, and our island pages flag July and August as the windiest stretch.

Heat is the other reason. Rhodes reaches 86°F (30°C) in June and gets hotter in July. For a climb to the Lindos acropolis or Knossos, June mornings are easier. Compare September, when the sea is warmest.

Picking a lower-ranked island in June

  • A first trip that mixes beaches and villages: Naxos at third is the safer choice than Crete if you have less than a week.
  • A couples' trip with a view: Santorini is seventh, held down by crowds, but its June weather score is 9.0. Book a caldera room well ahead.
  • Nightlife: Mykonos is last on the June list, but it is the only island here built around it.
  • Boat days and snorkeling: Milos, whose own page names June and September as the best months for Kleftiko trips.

What June costs, and what to watch

Two fees rise or apply in June. Greece's climate resilience fee is at its summer rate from April to October: $5.60 (€5) per room per night at a 3-star, $11.20 (€10) at a 4-star and $16.80 (€15) at a 5-star. The cruise landing fee on Santorini and Mykonos goes up to $22 (€20) per passenger from June 1 to September 30.

Summer is also wildfire season. In July 2023, fires on Rhodes forced the largest evacuation in Greek history. Follow alerts from Greece's 112 emergency service. On Crete, Samaria Gorge is closed until further notice, according to the park agency NECCA.

Getting there in June

No airline flies nonstop from the US to a Greek island. June is the peak of the Athens schedule: nonstops from New York JFK and Newark, seasonal flights from Atlanta, Boston, Charlotte, Chicago, Dallas/Fort Worth, Philadelphia and Washington Dulles, and in 2027, Seattle on Alaska from May 12 and Detroit on Delta from June 8. From Athens, take a short flight or a ferry from Piraeus.

You need a passport valid three months beyond your departure from the Schengen area. The EU Entry/Exit System records fingerprints and a photo; ETIAS is not yet operating. See the passport guide, and compare warm-water options worldwide in the best islands in June.

Rhodes, with June highs of 86°F (30°C). Crete reaches 84°F (29°C). Mykonos is the mildest at 78°F (26°C).

Yes. It ranges from 71°F (22°C) on Mykonos to 75°F (24°C) on Crete, about 6°F warmer than in May.
