May is the month when Greece wakes up. The hotels that close for winter reopen, the ferries add sailings, and the hillsides are still green. It is also the month when the sea is cooler than many Americans expect. On every island we rank, the May sea sits between 65°F and 68°F (19°C and 20°C). That is swimmable, but bracing.
So the May ranking rewards warmth. Crete is first and Rhodes second, the two southernmost islands on the list and the two with the warmest May sea. The Cyclades follow, dry and pleasant for walking, but a little cool for long swims. If the beach is the whole point, wait for June.

The ranking
Score = 55% this month's weather + 45% the island's other five factors. How we score
Crete leads May on all-round strength more than weather. Its May score is 7.4, with highs of 77°F (25°C) and a sea of 68°F (20°C), tied for the warmest in Greece. Then its beaches, 9, and things to do, 9.5, carry it. May suits Crete well: Knossos and Chania's lanes are comfortable before the heat, and Elafonisi's shallow lagoon is the gentlest swim on the island. Rain is about 1.3 inches (32 mm). Samaria Gorge is closed until further notice, so plan Imbros instead.
Rhodes has the best May weather in Greece, 7.6, with highs of 78°F (26°C) and a 68°F (20°C) sea. It finishes second because its beaches score 7 against Crete's 9. May is a good month for its sights: the climb to the Lindos acropolis is hot by late morning in summer, and the Medieval City is easier to walk before the July crowds. Rooms are cheap: a 3-star near the Old Town was $36 for January 13, 2027 and $96 for July 14, 2027, the best value of the big islands.
Naxos is third, with a May weather score of 6.6: highs of 75°F (24°C), a 66°F (19°C) sea and about 0.6 inches (15 mm) of rain. The cool water is the drag. The rest of its scores keep it ahead of Paros, with beaches at 8.5 and a crowd score of 6.3. May is the best month for its interior: the marble villages of Apeiranthos and Halki, the kouroi in the old quarries and the hike up Mount Zas. Agios Georgios in town is the calmest swim.
Paros is one of the driest islands in May, at about 0.4 inches (11 mm) of rain, but also one of the coolest: highs of 73°F (23°C) and a 66°F (19°C) sea give it a May weather score of 6.2. Its value score of 9.2 keeps it fourth. May is a good time to walk the Byzantine path from Lefkes and to hop to Naxos or Antiparos before the wind builds. Shallow Kolymbithres is the best bet for a swim.
Corfu is the wettest island here in May, at about 3.0 inches (76 mm), and its May weather score of 5.8 puts it fifth. Highs reach 72°F (22°C) and the sea 67°F (19°C). In its favor, things to do score 8.5, and May is when the hills are greenest. Corfu Town, the Achilleion and a boat to Paxos all work in mixed weather. A 3-star room near town was $130 for July 14, 2027.
Milos is dry in May, at about 0.4 inches (11 mm) of rain, with highs of 73°F (23°C) and a 66°F (19°C) sea. Its beaches score 8, but value scores 4.3 because rated hotels are scarce: the cheapest 3-star-or-better in Adamas was $291 for July 14, 2027. Its own page rates it worth it from June to September, which costs 0.4 points. Boat trips to Kleftiko run, but the cool sea makes swim stops short.
Santorini's May weather score is 6.5: highs of 74°F (23°C), a 67°F (19°C) sea and about 0.4 inches (11 mm) of rain. That is fine for the Fira to Oia path and Akrotiri, which is why its own page names April to June as a good window. It stays seventh because its beaches score 5 and its crowd score is 1.0. Cruise passengers pay $13 (€12) to land in May.
Mykonos has the coolest May in our Greek list: highs of 71°F (22°C) and a 65°F (19°C) sea, for a May weather score of 5.7. That puts it last, behind Santorini. It is drier than it sounds, about 0.6 inches (14 mm) of rain. The plus is Delos, where boats run from April 1 for $28 (€25) return; go on the first boat, as the site has almost no shade. The July floor in town was $198, against $54 in January.
Each island's May score blends two things: 55% is its May weather score, built from the daytime high, sea temperature, rainfall and sunshine for May, and 45% is everything else we score: beaches, things to do, access from the US, hotel value and crowds. Islands whose own page gives a conditional verdict lose 0.4 points on the second half. The weights and sources are on how we score islands.
That is why Rhodes has the best May weather score, 7.6, but finishes second. Crete's beaches and sights score higher, and its May weather, 7.4, is close behind.
Is May warm enough for a Greek beach trip?
For sunbathing, yes. For long swims, it depends on your tolerance. Daytime highs run from 71°F (22°C) on Mykonos to 78°F (26°C) on Rhodes. The sea runs from 65°F (19°C) to 68°F (20°C). On every island here it gains 6°F to 7°F between May and June.
Rain is rarely the problem in the Aegean. Paros, Milos and Santorini each average about 0.4 inches (11 mm) for the month. Corfu, in the Ionian, is the exception at about 3.0 inches (76 mm), which is why it falls to fifth. Compare the full picture in our June ranking.
When to choose a lower-ranked island in May
You want to hike and see villages, not swim: Naxos. Its mountain interior, with Apeiranthos, Halki and the path up Mount Zas, is at its best before the summer heat.
You want the caldera without July crowds: Santorini. Its own page calls April to June the right window, and in May it is dry, at about 0.4 inches (11 mm) of rain.
You want green scenery and an old town: Corfu, if you can live with a few wet days.
You want the warmest sea in Greece: stay with Crete or Rhodes.
What changes on the ground in May
The higher summer rate of Greece's climate resilience fee applies from April to October: $5.60 (€5) per room per night at a 3-star hotel, $11.20 (€10) at a 4-star and $16.80 (€15) at a 5-star. Cruise passengers landing on Santorini or Mykonos pay $13 (€12) in May, before the $22 (€20) summer rate starts on June 1.
The meltemi, the strong dry north wind of the Aegean, starts around mid-May. Early in the month it is usually calmer. On Crete, plan around one closure: Samaria Gorge is closed until further notice, according to the park agency NECCA, so look at Imbros Gorge instead. On Mykonos, the Delos boats run from April 1.
Getting there in May
No US airline flies nonstop to a Greek island in any month. You fly to Athens, which has nonstops from New York JFK and Newark and seasonal flights from Atlanta, Boston, Charlotte, Chicago, Dallas/Fort Worth, Philadelphia and Washington Dulles. Alaska Airlines adds Seattle to Athens from May 12, 2027. Check that your seasonal route has started before you book an early-May trip.
You need a passport valid three months beyond your departure from the Schengen area. The EU Entry/Exit System takes fingerprints and a photo on first entry; ETIAS is not yet operating. Our passport guide explains both. For the whole-year view, see the best Greek island to visit, and for warm-sea alternatives elsewhere, the best islands in May.
