Santorini
Santorini is a volcano that collapsed into the sea. What is left is a crescent of cliffs around a flooded caldera, with Fira, Imerovigli and Oia built along the rim. That view is why you come. It is also why the island is busy: ELSTAT counted 1,571,709 arrivals in hotels and short-stay rentals in the Thira regional unit in 2025, and the Hellenic Ports Association logged 1,203,052 cruise passengers on top of that.
The beaches are the weak point. They are dark volcanic sand and pebbles, and they get hot underfoot. If you want pale sand and shallow water, Naxos is a short ferry ride away. If you want a clifftop sunset, a Bronze Age town and serious white wine, Santorini still has no rival in the Greek islands.

Where Santorini ranks
Who Santorini suits, and who should skip it
Santorini works for couples, honeymooners and first-time visitors to Greece who want one famous view and an easy trip. The airport has year-round flights from Athens, the bus network links Fira to most villages, and a short stay of three or four nights covers the main sights.
It works less well for families with small children. The caldera villages are steps, ledges and drops, and strollers are a struggle. It is also a poor pick on a budget in high summer. Compare it in our couples ranking and, if you have children, check the family ranking first.
Where to stay: Fira, the caldera villages or the beach towns
- Fira is the capital and the bus hub. It has the most rooms and the most bars. On Kayak, the cheapest room rated 3 stars or better within a mile of the center was $32 for January 13, 2027 (a 4-star listing) and $92 for July 14, 2027, taxes and fees in.
- Imerovigli and Oia sit higher on the rim with the famous sunset views. Expect to pay far more for a caldera-facing terrace, and to share Oia's lanes with tour groups at sunset.
- Kamari and Perissa on the east and south coasts are flat beach towns. They are cheaper, easier with children, and a bus ride from the caldera.
Winter is thin. Kayak listed 340 stays in the Thera area for January 13, 2027 against 1,016 for July 14, 2027, because many Cycladic hotels close from November to April. The ones that stay open are mostly in Fira.
Beaches: black sand, warm pebbles and a red cliff
Santorini's beaches are volcanic. The sand is dark grey to black, and on a sunny afternoon it is hot enough that you will want sandals to reach the water.
- Perissa and Perivolos form one long strip of black sand on the south coast, lined with sunbeds and tavernas. The water deepens gradually and is the best option for children.
- Kamari is the east coast resort beach: dark pebbles and sand, a long promenade, and the cliff of Mesa Vouno above.
- Vlychada has wind-carved pale cliffs and fewer people.
- Red Beach, near Akrotiri, is small and sits under an unstable red cliff. Look at it from the path, and respect any closure signs.
Our score is a 5 out of 10: swimmable, but nothing like the long pale bays of Milos or Naxos.
Things to do beyond the view
- Walk Fira to Oia. The path follows the caldera rim through Firostefani and Imerovigli. Start early; there is little shade.
- Akrotiri. A Bronze Age town buried by the Minoan eruption about 3,600 years ago, with multi-story houses and streets under a modern roof.
- Ancient Thera. Ruins of the later Dorian city on the ridge above Kamari, reached by a steep road or footpath.
- A caldera boat trip to the lava island of Nea Kameni, usually with a swim stop.
- Wineries and Pyrgos. The island's Assyrtiko vines grow low in baskets against the wind; several wineries offer tastings, and Pyrgos is a hilltop village with fewer crowds than Oia.
When to go
Late spring and early autumn are the sweet spot: the sea is warm enough by June, the light is clear, and the cruise crowds are smaller. July and August are the hottest, busiest and most expensive months. The Aegean's meltemi, a strong dry north wind, blows from about mid-May to mid-September and can delay fast ferries. Winter is quiet and many hotels shut. See the monthly table below for sea and air conditions, and our September ranking for the alternatives.
The 2025 earthquake swarm still shows in the numbers. A state of emergency ran from February 6 to March 3, 2025, and INSETE recorded a 13.6% drop in international air arrivals for the year. The island was operating normally in 2026.
Getting there from the US, and what you need
There is no nonstop flight from the US to Santorini (JTR). You fly to Athens and connect. US airports with nonstop Athens service include New York JFK and Newark year-round or seasonally, plus seasonal flights from Atlanta, Boston, Charlotte, Chicago, Dallas/Fort Worth, Philadelphia and Washington Dulles. Delta adds Detroit from June 8, 2027 and Alaska adds Seattle from May 12, 2027. From Athens, Aegean and Sky Express fly to Santorini.
By sea, Blue Star Ferries sails daily from Piraeus in about 6 hours 10 minutes from $52 (€46.50), and Seajets runs faster boats in about 5 hours from $101 (€89.70), per Ferryhopper.
US citizens need a passport valid at least three months beyond the date you leave the Schengen area. No visa is needed for 90 days. The EU's Entry/Exit System has been fully running since April 10, 2026, so expect fingerprints and a photo on first entry. ETIAS is not yet operating, and the EU says it will announce a start date months in advance. Our passport guide has the detail.
What a trip costs, fees included
The two Kayak nights above, $32 in January and $92 in July, are floor prices for Fira. Caldera-view rooms cost several times that. On top, Greece charges a climate resilience fee per room per night, paid at checkout: from April to October it is $5.60 (€5) at a 3-star hotel, $11.20 (€10) at a 4-star and $16.80 (€15) at a 5-star; from November to March, $1.70 (€1.50), $3.40 (€3) and $4.50 (€4).
Cruise passengers pay a separate landing fee at Santorini and Mykonos: $22 (€20) per person from June 1 to September 30, $13 (€12) in April, May and October, and $4.50 (€4) from November to March. It is usually billed by the cruise line.

Frequently asked questions
Is Santorini worth visiting?
Yes, for the caldera, the Fira to Oia walk, Akrotiri and the wineries, especially in spring or autumn. No, if you want a beach holiday or a budget trip in July and August; Naxos and Paros do both better.
Is Santorini safe after the 2025 earthquakes?
The swarm of early 2025 led to a state of emergency from February 6 to March 3, 2025. It ended, and the island operated normally through 2026. Follow local signs near cliffs and at Red Beach, where rockfall is the everyday risk.
Do you need a car on Santorini?
No. KTEL buses connect Fira with Oia, Kamari, Perissa, Akrotiri and the port. A car or ATV helps for wineries and Ancient Thera, but parking in the caldera villages is very limited in summer.
Can you swim at Santorini's beaches?
Yes. Perissa, Perivolos and Kamari have sunbeds and gradual entries. The sand is black and gets very hot, so bring water shoes or sandals.
How do you get from Athens to Santorini?
Fly from Athens with Aegean or Sky Express, or take a ferry from Piraeus: Blue Star Ferries in about 6 hours 10 minutes from $52 (€46.50), or Seajets in about 5 hours from $101 (€89.70).
