Ask most Americans for the most romantic Greek island and they will say Santorini. Our scores say Paros. It has two harbor towns built for slow evenings, Parikia and Naoussa, sandy bays on every coast, a hill village with a Byzantine footpath, and July rooms from $89, less than half the Mykonos floor.
Santorini finishes sixth. Its caldera sunsets are as good as their reputation. The island is also small, crowded and short on good beaches, and those numbers count. If the view is the one thing you want, the sections below explain how to do Santorini well. If you want a week that feels like a holiday for two, start with Paros or Corfu.
At a glance
Best for couples
Paros: Naoussa's harbor dinners, Lefkes and sandy bays, with a $89 Parikia room for July 14, 2027
Best for evenings in town
Corfu: the Venetian old town, west coast sunsets and quiet coves at Kalami and Kassiopi
Quietest
Milos: no big resorts, sunsets from Plaka and boat days to Kleftiko
The famous view
Santorini, sixth: the caldera is real, but its crowd score is 1.0 and its beaches score 5
Best value
Rhodes, eighth for couples: rooms from $36 in January and $96 in July near the Old Town
The ranking
Score = the island's overall score, with islands that suit this kind of trip ranked first. How we score
Paros wins because it gives couples most of what Santorini does at a fraction of the crowd and price. Naoussa's harbor dinners, the hill village of Lefkes and sunset bars carry the couples tag; its overall score, 7.0, is held up by a 9.2 for value. A Parikia 3-star was $89 for July 14, 2027. Beaches score 7.5: Kolymbithres is calm, but the north wind is strong in July and August. Naxos is 50 minutes away for a second stop.
Corfu is second for couples who want a real town to walk in every evening. The Venetian old town, west coast sunsets and quiet northeast coves at Kalami and Kassiopi earn its couples tag, and things to do score 8.5. It looks and feels unlike the Aegean islands: green, wooded and less windy. The catch is the beaches, 7, many of them pebbly. A 3-star near town was $130 for July 14, 2027, and a villa with a pool is the classic stay.
Crete is third without a couples tag, purely on strength: its overall score of 8.2 is the best in Greece. For two, the draw is Chania's Venetian harbor, the mountain villages and the food, and beaches such as Falassarna at sunset. The catch is that it is a road trip, 162 miles (260 km) end to end, and it needs a car and a week. A Chania 3-star was $59 for January 13, 2027 and $112 for July 14.
Milos is fourth and the quietest pick here. Sunsets from Plaka, seafood in Adamas, boat days to the sea caves of Kleftiko and no big resorts earn its couples tag, and its beaches score 8. Two numbers hold it back. Value scores 4.3, because the cheapest 3-star-or-better in Adamas was $291 for July 14, 2027, and its own page rates it worth it only from June to September. A car is close to essential.
Mykonos is fifth, for couples who want style and nightlife. Little Venice at sunset, the sheltered sand of Psarou and Ornos and a day on Delos earn its couples tag. The Delos boat is $28 (€25) return, plus $22 (€20) site entry. It is held down by crowds, a score of 2.0, and price: the July floor in town was $198. Its own page suggests three or four days in June or September.
Santorini is sixth, tied with Naxos on 7.4. Caldera-view terraces in Imerovigli and Oia, sunset walks and winery tastings make it the classic Greek honeymoon pick and earn its couples tag. But its crowd score is 1.0, its beaches score 5, and its own verdict is conditional. Fira's floor was $92 for July 14, 2027, and caldera rooms cost several times that. Two or three nights, in spring or autumn, is the way to do it.
Naxos is seventh because it is not tagged for couples: our editors see it as a family and first-trip island. It still works for two who like to drive and eat. Sunset at the Portara, the marble doorway by the harbor, dinners in the mountain villages of Halki and Apeiranthos, and long sandy beaches at Plaka make a calm week. A Naxos Town 3-star was $122 for July 14, 2027.
Rhodes is eighth, again without a couples tag. Its resort strips at Faliraki are built for families, and parts of the coast are package-holiday territory. For couples, the case is Lindos, the white village under its acropolis, and evenings in the walled Medieval City. It is the cheapest island here: $36 for January 13, 2027 and $96 for July 14 near the Old Town.
Each island starts from its overall score: weather 20%, beaches 25%, things to do 25%, access from the US 10%, hotel value 10% and crowds 10%, minus 0.4 if its own page gives a conditional verdict. Islands our editors tag as good for couples, with a written reason, get 1.5 extra points. Five of the eight carry the tag: Paros, Corfu, Milos, Mykonos and Santorini. The method is on how we score islands.
That explains the one surprise. Crete is not tagged for couples, but its overall score, 8.2, is so high that it still ranks third, above three tagged islands. Naxos and Rhodes, also untagged, finish seventh and eighth.
Why Santorini is not first, and when to pick it anyway
Santorini's score is sunk by three numbers. Its crowd score is 1.0, the floor of our scale: ELSTAT counted 1,571,709 arrivals in the Thira regional unit in 2025, and cruise ships landed 1,203,052 passengers. Its beaches score 5, because they are dark volcanic sand that gets hot underfoot. And its own page gives it a conditional verdict, worth it from April to June and in September and October.
Pick it anyway if the caldera is the trip. Book a room in Imerovigli or Oia with a caldera-facing terrace, expect it to cost several times the $92 Fira floor we found for July 14, 2027, and walk the Fira to Oia path early, before the heat. Two or three nights is enough. Then take a ferry to Naxos or Paros for the beaches. Our honeymoon ranking compares it with islands worldwide.
Two islands are better than one
The Cyclades make two-island trips easy, and couples get the most from them: one island for the view, one for the beaches. Ferry times and fares from Ferryhopper:
Paros and Naxos: about 50 minutes on Blue Star, from $6 (€5.50).
Paros and Santorini: about 3 hours 15 minutes, from $15 (€13).
Naxos and Santorini: about an hour by fast ferry.
Milos and Santorini: 1 hour 50 minutes to 5 hours 10 minutes, from $18 (€15.99).
The meltemi, the Aegean's strong north wind from about mid-May to mid-September, can delay fast ferries and cancel boat trips, so leave a spare evening at the end of the trip, not the start.
When to go as a couple
June and September give you warm sea and fewer people than July and August, and our island pages for Paros, Milos and Mykonos all name them as the best months. September has the warmest sea of the two. Compare the month-by-month scores in our September and June rankings.
What a trip for two costs
Our hotel prices are for one double room, two adults, taxes and fees in, on Kayak for July 14, 2027: $89 in Parikia, $92 in Fira, $122 in Naxos Town, $130 near Corfu Town, $198 in Mykonos Town and $291 in Adamas on Milos. On top, hotels collect Greece's climate resilience fee per room per night: from April to October, $5.60 (€5) at a 3-star, $11.20 (€10) at a 4-star and $16.80 (€15) at a 5-star. Boutique and sea-view rooms on any of these islands cost well above these floors.
No US airline flies nonstop to a Greek island; fly to Athens from New York JFK or Newark, or seasonally from seven other US airports. You need a passport valid three months beyond your Schengen departure; see the passport guide.
