October feels like the end of hurricane season, and it is not. The NOAA National Hurricane Center says most Atlantic activity runs from mid-August to mid-October, and the season formally closes on November 30. Jamaica learned this the hard way: Hurricane Melissa struck its western parishes in late October 2025, and some of Montego Bay's biggest resorts will not reopen until 2027.
The ranking reflects both the risk and the rain. Curaçao leads for the sixth month running, and Aruba is second, though both are entering their own short rainy season. Every island in the top eight has a sea temperature of 86°F (30°C), the warmest water of the year in several places.

The ranking
Score = 55% this month's weather + 45% the island's other five factors. How we score
Curaçao leads October with an 8.7 weather score: about 2.6 inches of rain as its short rainy season begins, 88°F (31°C) days and an 86°F sea. Its halved storm deduction reflects one hurricane within 50 nautical miles since 1950. The value score does the rest, with Willemstad rooms at $62 on both our dates. October is a good month for the Hato Caves and the landhuizen plantation houses on showery afternoons, and for Klein Curaçao on calm mornings.
Aruba is second and has the driest October on this list, about 2.4 inches, with 88°F days and its warmest sea of the year, 86°F. Its beaches score 9: Eagle Beach is wide and rarely crowded at its northern end. Price and density hold it below Curaçao, with the cheapest Noord room at $173 on our July check and 1.5 million stay-over visitors in 2025. Nonstops come from 17 US airports, some seasonal; add the $20 Sustainability Fee.
Grenada is third on a halved storm deduction, an 86°F sea and about 4.8 inches of rain. It is quiet in October and good value, with southwest rooms from $96 to $100 on our dates. Grand Anse and Morne Rouge stay calm in settled weather. Read its storm record before booking: six hurricanes within 50 nautical miles since 1950, including Ivan in 2004 and Beryl in 2024. Its own page advises the ABC islands from August to October for anyone storm-averse.
Bonaire is fourth, with an 8.6 weather score, about 3.0 inches of rain and an 86°F sea. Two hurricanes have passed within 50 nautical miles since 1950, and the leeward coast's dive sites stay calm unless a distant storm sends swell. Its beach score of 5 and conditional verdict keep it below the top three: the coast is mostly ironshore, and non-divers will find a few days enough. Kralendijk rooms were $95, plus the $75 entry tax and $40 nature fee.
Martinique is fifth, with about 4.8 inches of rain, 85°F days, an 86°F sea and the full storm deduction. Its year-round profile is among the strongest here, with things to do at 8.5 and light crowds. October is a quiet month for the rum distilleries, Saint-Pierre and the turtle bays at Grande Anse d'Arlet. Expect cloud and mud on Mount Pelée. Rooms in Les Trois-Îlets were $82 on our July check. The only US nonstop is American from Miami.
Barbados is sixth with the wettest October on this list, about 6.4 inches, mostly as heavy showers, and an 86°F sea. Its storm deduction is halved, though six hurricanes have passed within 50 nautical miles since 1950. Its beaches score 8.5, and west-coast bays such as Mullins and Paynes stay calm between showers. Eight US airports fly nonstop, none seasonal. South-coast rooms were $92 on our July date, among the lower summer prices here.
Puerto Rico is seventh and the only no-passport island in the top eight. October rain is about 5.5 inches and it takes the full storm deduction, giving a 6.5 weather score. Its year-round profile is the best here: things to do at 9 and nonstops from 41 US airports. Island-wide power cuts after storms are the real risk, so stay in San Juan, where flights out are most frequent. Rooms there were $114 to $120 on our dates.
Antigua is eighth, with about 4.6 inches of rain, 85°F days and the full storm deduction. Its beaches, 9 out of 10, are the best on this page, and Dickenson Bay, Darkwood and Pigeon Point are calm and swimmable in settled weather. Flights change this month: JetBlue's JFK route is listed as ending October 31, 2026, though American keeps JFK. Fill in the ArriveAntigua form and carry a passport valid 180 days beyond departure.
October weather counts for 55% of each island's score, and the island's year-round profile for 45%. The weather part blends daytime high, sea temperature, rainfall and sunshine, and in October subtracts a storm penalty of 1.8 points out of 10, down from 2.5 in September. Aruba, Bonaire, Curaçao, Barbados and Grenada take half. The year-round profile covers beaches, things to do, access, value and crowding, with 0.4 off for islands our pages rate conditional. The Melissa lesson: late October is not safe
Hurricane Melissa came ashore in western Jamaica in late October 2025. A year on, the Jamaica Tourist Board says all three international airports and the cruise ports are operating, but its reopening list still shows seven large Montego Bay all-inclusives returning only in 2027. That is a long tail for a storm in what many travelers think of as the safe end of the season.
Jamaica falls to tenth this month, on rain rather than its recovery: our dataset puts its October rain at about 6.3 inches, among the highest of any Caribbean island we score. If you book anywhere in the main storm path for October, use refundable rates and buy storm cover before a system is named. Our hurricane and cyclone seasons guide explains the timing.
The ABC islands' short rainy season
Curaçao, Aruba and Bonaire are dry for most of the year, but their island pages all describe a short rainy season from about October to December. October rain rises to about 2.6 inches on Curaçao, 2.4 on Aruba and 3.0 on Bonaire, from about 2 inches or less in September. That is still far less than the 4.6 to 6.4 inches on the Eastern Caribbean islands on this list, and Aruba's page describes its showers as usually brief. Their low storm record keeps them on top.
If you dislike heat, October is a better month than September for Aruba and Curaçao: highs ease from 89°F and 90°F to 88°F on both.
Warm water everywhere, and who it suits
Every island on this list has an October sea of 86°F, which makes it a good month for long swims, snorkeling and diving if the weather holds. Bonaire, fourth, is the specialist's pick: shore diving along the marine park. Martinique, fifth, has turtles grazing in the bays at Grande Anse d'Arlet and Anse Dufour. October is also quiet: US schools are in session, and crowds and cruise traffic are low until the winter season starts. Indigenous Peoples' Day and Columbus Day fall on Monday, October 11, 2027, for a long weekend.
No-passport options and flight changes
Puerto Rico is seventh, the only US territory in the top eight; its October rain is about 5.5 inches and it sits in the main storm path. Island-wide power cuts after storms are its biggest risk. You need a REAL ID or a passport to fly, and TSA charges a $45 ConfirmID fee without one.
For Antigua, JetBlue's New York JFK service is listed as ending October 31, 2026; American keeps JFK, and Delta, United and American fly from Atlanta, Newark and Miami. Spirit Airlines shut down on May 2, 2026, which removed some cheap Florida links to the US Virgin Islands.
