Aruba

Southern Caribbean, Dutch Kingdom Nonstop from 17 US airports $20 fee via the ED card

Aruba sells one thing very well: a wide, calm, sandy beach that you can reach without a ferry, a second flight or a long drive. The hotel strip runs along the sheltered west coast, from Eagle Beach to Palm Beach, and the water there is usually flat enough for small children. The island is dry, flat and windy, with cactus scrub where other islands have rainforest.

It is also one of the busiest islands in this guide. The Central Bank of Aruba counted 1,515,102 stay-over visitors in 2025, up 6.6% on 2024, plus 970,533 cruise visitors. That is a lot of people on an island of about 69 square miles (179 km²). You will not have Palm Beach to yourself, and prices reflect the demand. Before you fly, every visitor fills in the online ED card and most pay a $20 Sustainability Fee through it.

Where Aruba ranks

Who Aruba is for, and who should skip it

Aruba suits families with young children, first-time Caribbean travelers and couples who want an easy, reliable beach week. Logistics are simple: English is widely spoken, the US dollar is accepted almost everywhere, and the airport sits between the capital and the hotel strip, so transfers are short.

Skip it if you want green mountains, waterfalls or village life. Aruba's interior is arid, and the windward coast is rocky and rough. Skip it, too, if price is your main filter. Rooms near the beach rarely come cheap, and dining on the strip is priced for visitors. For a greener island with more to explore, look at St. Lucia or Martinique. For Dutch-Caribbean culture at lower prices, Curaçao is the better pick.

Where to stay: Palm Beach, Eagle Beach or Oranjestad

  • Palm Beach is the high-rise strip: big resorts, casinos, restaurants and water sports outfitters on a busy beach. Best if you want everything within walking distance.
  • Eagle Beach, just south, is lower-rise and wider, with more space between towels. Best for a quieter beach with the strip a short taxi away.
  • Oranjestad, the capital, has cheaper rooms and is closest to the airport, but its beaches are small. You will drive or take a bus to the good sand.

On Kayak, the cheapest double in a 3-star-or-better hotel in the Noord district, which covers Eagle and Palm Beach, was $203 for Wednesday, January 13, 2027, and $173 for Wednesday, July 14, 2027, both for two adults with taxes and fees. Many full-service resorts on the same search ran $450 to $800 a night. Oranjestad had a few cheaper 3-star options in January.

Beaches: calm in the west, wild in the east

Aruba's best beaches face the Caribbean on the sheltered west and south coasts. Eagle Beach is broad, soft and rarely crowded at its northern end. Palm Beach has the calmest, shallowest water on the strip and the most people. Further north, Arashi and Boca Catalina are smaller and better for snorkeling from shore. In the far south, Baby Beach near San Nicolas is a shallow, enclosed lagoon that suits toddlers, and Mangel Halto has mangroves and reef close in.

The north and east coasts are different. Waves break hard on rock and coral, currents are strong, and most spots there are for looking, not swimming. Shade is scarce everywhere, and the wind that keeps you cool also makes it easy to burn. Aruba scores well on beaches because so many swimmable ones sit near the hotels, not because any one of them is empty.

Things to do beyond the beach

  • Arikok National Park covers much of the eastern interior: cactus trails, caves with petroglyphs and the Natural Pool, reached by four-wheel drive, horse or a long hike. The park charges an entrance fee; check the current amount with the park before you go.
  • Snorkeling and diving: the Antilla, a World War II German freighter scuttled off the northwest coast, is a standard half-day boat trip for snorkelers and divers.
  • Windsurfing and kitesurfing at Fisherman's Huts, north of Palm Beach, where the steady trade wind meets flat water.
  • Oranjestad for Dutch-colonial buildings and shopping, and San Nicolas for street murals.
  • The California Lighthouse and the rugged north coast at sunset.

That adds up to several good days beyond the beach, but not a week of variety. Aruba is a beach and food island first.

When to go, and the hurricane question

Aruba is one of the driest islands in this guide. The steady northeast trade wind blows most of the year, the sunniest, driest stretch runs from late winter into spring, and the short rainy season falls from about October to December, when showers are usually brief. The 12-month table on this page has the numbers.

The Atlantic hurricane season runs June 1 to November 30, peaking around September 10, per the NOAA National Hurricane Center. Aruba sits far enough south that most storms track north of it. In NOAA's HURDAT2 best-track records since 1950, only two hurricanes passed with their center within 50 nautical miles (58 miles): Anna in 1961 and Felix in 2007. Tropical storms come closer more often, as Bret did in 2023. Aruba is not immune, but summer and fall carry less storm risk here than on most islands. Our hurricane season guide compares islands.

Winter is peak season and the most expensive. Summer is hotter and less windy, and rooms are usually cheaper; see the best Caribbean islands in July.

Getting there from the US, and entry rules

Queen Beatrix International Airport (AUA) has more US nonstops than any other island in the southern Caribbean. According to its Wikipedia airline table, read October 20, 2026, there are year-round flights from Atlanta, Baltimore, Boston, Charlotte, Chicago O'Hare, Fort Lauderdale, Houston, Miami, Newark, New York JFK, Orlando, Philadelphia and Washington Dulles, plus seasonal flights from Dallas/Fort Worth, Minneapolis/St. Paul and New York LaGuardia. Southwest's seasonal Nashville route is listed to begin March 13, 2027.

US citizens need a passport valid for the length of the stay; the State Department says no visa is needed for stays of 30 days or less. Every traveler must complete the free online Embarkation and Disembarkation (ED) card within 7 days of arrival. Most visitors aged 8 and over also pay the $20 Sustainability Fee through the ED card, by card only, before airline check-in. Aruba's tourism authority says sites charging more than $20 are not official. Our passport rules guide covers the basics.

What a trip costs

Hotel nights drive the budget. Our checks found $203 in mid-January and $173 in mid-July for the cheapest 3-star-plus double near Eagle and Palm Beach, taxes in. Add the $20 Sustainability Fee per person aged 8 and over. Many resorts list a separate daily resort fee, so read the final booking screen. Eating on the strip is expensive by Caribbean standards; supermarkets and local snack bars in Noord and Oranjestad cut costs.

You can manage without a car on Palm or Eagle Beach, using buses and taxis. Rent one for a day or two for Baby Beach, the north coast and Arikok, and use a four-wheel drive if you plan to reach the Natural Pool on your own.

Frequently asked questions

How much is the Aruba sustainability fee?

It is $20 per person for visitors arriving by air, charged through the online ED card before airline check-in. Children under 8 and residents are exempt, and cruise passengers do not pay it, per Aruba's tourism authority.

Do I need a passport for Aruba?

Yes. Aruba is part of the Kingdom of the Netherlands, not the US. US citizens need a passport valid for the whole stay and must complete the ED card online within 7 days before arrival. No visa is needed for stays of 30 days or less.

Is Aruba outside the hurricane belt?

Mostly, but not entirely. NOAA best-track data shows only two hurricanes passed within 50 nautical miles of Aruba since 1950, in 1961 and 2007. Tropical storms pass closer more often. Travel insurance still makes sense from August to October.

Which Aruba beach is best for kids?

Baby Beach, a shallow enclosed lagoon near San Nicolas, is the calmest. Palm Beach is the easiest choice if you are staying on the strip: the water is shallow and usually flat, but boats and jet skis run offshore, so watch children closely.

Is Aruba worth it in summer?

Usually, yes. It sits south of the main hurricane track, rain is light until about October, and rooms cost less than in winter. Expect more heat and less wind than in the dry, breezy late-winter months.
