Grenada
Grenada is the southernmost of the Windward Islands and one of the least hurried. The main island has a long, calm beach at Grand Anse, a rainforest interior with crater lakes and waterfalls, and a working spice economy of nutmeg and cocoa. St. George's, the capital, wraps around a horseshoe harbor below an old fort.
The country also includes Carriacou and Petite Martinique, which took the worst of Hurricane Beryl on July 1, 2024. The Grenada Tourism Authority counted 186,395 stay-over visitors in 2025, down 4.4% from 2024, a dip the Eastern Caribbean Central Bank links mainly to a record first half of 2024. Early 2026 looks stronger: Caribbean Journal, citing Caribbean Tourism Organization data, reported a 12% rise in stay-overs in the first quarter.

Weather month by month
Best months by our weather score: February, March, April. Daytime highs, rain and sunshine are 2016–2025 averages at Maurice Bishop International Airport (Open-Meteo historical weather archive); sea temperatures are 2022–2025 averages for the nearest sea area (Open-Meteo marine archive). Months marked in the storm row fall in the Atlantic hurricane season (June 1 to November 30); the score takes that risk into account.

Where Grenada ranks
Who Grenada is for, and who should skip it
Grenada suits couples, divers and travelers who like to get out of the hotel: hike to a waterfall in the morning, tour a cocoa estate after lunch, eat fish at a street party at night. Most hotels are small to mid-sized, and the island rarely feels crowded.
Skip it if you want a choice of US nonstops, casinos or a long strip of big resorts. Flights are limited, and outside Grand Anse the beaches need a drive. For a busier scene with more flights, try Barbados. For the steepest scenery in the Windwards, see St. Lucia.
Where to stay: Grand Anse, Morne Rouge or the south coast
- Grand Anse has most of the hotels, on or near the island's best beach, between the airport and St. George's. Best for a first visit and for families.
- Morne Rouge (BBC Beach), just south, is a smaller, quieter bay with a few hotels. Best for couples.
- Lance aux Épines and the south coast has marinas, villas and quiet coves. Best for longer stays and sailors.
On Kayak, the cheapest double in a 3-star-or-better hotel in the southwest, around St. George's, Grand Anse and Lance aux Épines, was $96 for Wednesday, January 13, 2027, and $100 for Wednesday, July 14, 2027, for two adults with taxes and fees. A glamping site in the far north came in cheaper but is outside the area and not a hotel room.
Beaches: Grand Anse first, then the coves
Grand Anse is the reason many people pick Grenada: a long, gently curving beach of pale sand with calm, clear water that suits children and swimmers. Its public access and vendors keep it lively without feeling packed. Morne Rouge next door is even calmer, a sheltered bay that is good for floating and snorkeling.
Further afield, La Sagesse on the southeast coast is a quiet palm-backed cove, Magazine Beach near the airport is good for sunsets, and the beaches on the Atlantic side, such as Bathway in the north, are wilder, with stronger surf and currents in places. A day trip to Carriacou adds Sandy Island and Paradise Beach, but check what is open first.
Things to do: under water, in the rainforest and in the spice trade
- Underwater Sculpture Park at Moliniere Bay, north of St. George's: snorkel or dive over submerged figures.
- Diving, including the Bianca C, a cruise ship wreck off Grand Anse for experienced divers.
- Grand Etang National Park, a crater lake and rainforest in the mountains, with trails to Seven Sisters Falls; Annandale and Concord falls are easier stops.
- Belmont Estate and other cocoa estates for chocolate tours, the nutmeg processing station in Gouyave, and the River Antoine rum distillery, still driven by a water wheel.
- St. George's: the Carenage harbor, Fort George and the market, and Fish Friday in Gouyave each week.
That is a week of varied days, which puts Grenada just behind the bigger Windwards on things to do.
Hurricane Beryl: what happened and what is rebuilt in 2026
According to the NOAA National Hurricane Center's report, Beryl made landfall on Carriacou at 1520 UTC on July 1, 2024, with sustained winds near 138 mph (120 knots), a Category 4. Grenada's Meteorological Service reported that 99% of buildings on Carriacou and 70% on Petite Martinique were damaged or destroyed, and Carriacou's only hospital was destroyed. Three people died in Grenada and its dependencies, and damage was estimated at $218 million. The main island had hurricane conditions too, with sustained winds of 80 knots (92 mph) at the airport, but far less destruction.
Two years on, the main island of Grenada is fully open to visitors. The Grenada Tourism Authority says Carriacou and Petite Martinique are recovering and welcoming visitors again, with rebuilding ongoing. The Eastern Caribbean Central Bank reported higher government spending in 2025 on reconstruction, roads and water. NAWASA broke ground on new water storage on Carriacou in June 2025, and Princess Royal Hospital commissioned its first oxygen-generation plant in February 2026, per NOW Grenada. We could not find an official list of which Carriacou guesthouses have reopened, so confirm your booking directly before you plan a stay there.
When to go, and the storm season
The dry season runs from about January to May, with the driest, breeziest weather in late winter and early spring. From June the rainy season brings heavier, more frequent showers through the fall. The 12-month table on this page has the numbers.
The Atlantic hurricane season runs June 1 to November 30, peaking around September 10, per the NOAA National Hurricane Center. Grenada was long described as south of the hurricane belt, but the record says otherwise. In NOAA's HURDAT2 best-track data since 1950, six hurricanes passed with their center within 50 nautical miles (58 miles), including Ivan in 2004 and Beryl in 2024. See our hurricane season guide.
Getting there from the US, entry rules and cost
Maurice Bishop International Airport (GND) has nonstops from Miami (American, year-round), Charlotte (American, seasonal), Atlanta (Delta) and New York JFK (JetBlue), according to the airport's Wikipedia airline table read October 20, 2026. Carriacou is reached by ferry from St. George's or by a short regional flight.
US citizens need a passport; the State Department's Grenada page asks for six months' validity beyond arrival, and no visa is needed for 90 days or less. Since March 2, 2026, Grenada has used an online Embarkation/Disembarkation card in place of paper forms; officials recommend completing it the day before you travel. See our passport rules guide.
Our Kayak checks found $96 a night in mid-January and $100 in mid-July for the cheapest 3-star-plus double in the southwest, taxes in. The currency is the Eastern Caribbean dollar, pegged to the US dollar; US dollars are widely accepted. Rent a car or hire a driver for the interior.
