Barbados
Barbados gets labeled a luxury island because of the villas and polo fields of the west coast. The island as a whole is more mixed than that. The south coast around St. Lawrence Gap has mid-range hotels, rum shops and the Friday fish fry at Oistins, and the west coast, the Platinum Coast, has the calmest water. Between them sits Bridgetown, whose historic center and garrison are on the UNESCO World Heritage List.
It is a busy island. The Barbados Statistical Service counted 707,046 stay-over arrivals in 2025, about a third of them from the US, and 738,935 cruise passengers. Barbados is also the most easterly island in this guide, out in the Atlantic beyond the main Windward chain. Before you land, fill in the online Immigration and Customs Form.

Weather month by month
Best months by our weather score: February, March, April. Daytime highs, rain and sunshine are 2016–2025 averages at Grantley Adams International Airport (Open-Meteo historical weather archive); sea temperatures are 2022–2025 averages for the nearest sea area (Open-Meteo marine archive). Months marked in the storm row fall in the Atlantic hurricane season (June 1 to November 30); the score takes that risk into account.

Where Barbados ranks
Who Barbados is for, and who should skip it
Barbados works for families, couples and solo travelers. English is the language, the public buses and route-taxi minibuses cover the south and west coasts cheaply, and the food scene runs from fish-fry stalls to fine dining. The calm leeward beaches suit children.
Skip it if you want dramatic volcanic peaks and rainforest hikes. Barbados is a coral island, green but gently rolling; its wild scenery is the Atlantic east coast. For mountains, St. Lucia is a short flight away. For lower prices and a quieter feel, look at Grenada.
With young children, base yourself on the west coast or near the calm side of Miami Beach, where the water is usually flat. Teens can take beginner surf lessons on the gentler south-coast breaks, snorkel with turtles in Carlisle Bay or watch the experienced surfers at the Soup Bowl in Bathsheba. Couples tend to split the week: a few nights on the quiet west coast, a few near the bars and restaurants of the south.
Where to stay: south coast, west coast or Bridgetown
- South coast (Christ Church): Hastings, Worthing, Dover and St. Lawrence Gap have the widest range of mid-priced hotels, bars and restaurants, and are close to the airport. Best for value, solo travelers and nightlife.
- West coast (St. James and St. Peter): Holetown, Mullins and Speightstown have the calmest water and the big luxury resorts. Best for couples and families who want flat seas.
- Bridgetown and Carlisle Bay: a few hotels on the bay, walking distance from the capital and one of the best swimming beaches.
On Kayak, the cheapest double in a 3-star-or-better hotel on the Christ Church south coast was $140 for Wednesday, January 13, 2027, and $92 for Wednesday, July 14, 2027, for two adults with taxes and fees.
Beaches: two calm coasts and one wild one
The west coast faces the Caribbean and is usually flat. Mullins Bay, Paynes Bay and Carlisle Bay near Bridgetown are good for swimming and snorkeling; Carlisle Bay has several shallow wrecks and turtles close to shore. The sand is golden, and some west-coast beaches narrow sharply at high tide.
The south coast has livelier beaches with a little more wave: Accra (Rockley), Dover and Miami Beach at Enterprise, which has a calm side for children and a wavier side. On the southeast, Crane Beach and Bottom Bay are dramatic pink-tinged coves under cliffs, with stronger surf.
The east coast, around Bathsheba, is beautiful and dangerous: big Atlantic swells and rip currents make it a place for surfers and photographers, not swimmers. Sargassum seaweed can wash up on the south and east coasts in some summers.
Things to do beyond the beach
- Historic Bridgetown and its Garrison, on the UNESCO list since 2011: Parliament, the Careenage waterfront and the Garrison Savannah, home to horse racing.
- Harrison's Cave, a limestone cave toured by tram; the official site lists the Signature Tram Tour from $69 per person.
- Oistins Friday Fish Fry on the south coast, with grilled fish, music and dancing.
- Rum: distillery and plantation visits, including St. Nicholas Abbey, a 17th-century plantation house in the north.
- Gardens and the east coast: Hunte's Gardens, Andromeda Gardens and the drive to Bathsheba.
- Cricket at Kensington Oval in Bridgetown when a match is on, and catamaran and turtle snorkel trips off the west coast.
That is a full week of varied days, though without big hikes.
When to go, and the hurricane question
The dry season runs from about December to May, when the trade winds are steady and the driest months fall in late winter. Rain increases from June and peaks in the fall, usually as heavy showers rather than all-day rain. The 12-month table on this page has the numbers.
The Atlantic hurricane season runs June 1 to November 30, peaking around September 10, per the NOAA National Hurricane Center. Barbados sits east of the main island chain and is hit less often than islands further north. In NOAA's HURDAT2 best-track records since 1950, six hurricanes passed with their center within 50 nautical miles (58 miles), most recently Elsa in 2021, and 25 storms of tropical-storm strength or more came that close. See our hurricane season guide and the best Caribbean islands in February.
Getting there from the US, and entry rules
Grantley Adams International Airport (BGI) has US nonstops from Atlanta (Delta), Boston and New York JFK (JetBlue), Charlotte, Miami and Philadelphia (American), and Newark and Washington Dulles (United), according to the airport's Wikipedia airline table read October 20, 2026. Barbados is also the main regional hub for the Eastern Caribbean, with short hops to St. Lucia, Grenada and beyond.
US citizens need a passport valid at entry; the State Department says no visa is needed for visits of six months or less. Travelers are required to complete the online Immigration and Customs Form, which opens 72 hours before arrival; save the receipt to your phone. See our passport rules guide.
What a trip costs
Our Kayak checks found $140 a night in mid-January and $92 in mid-July for the cheapest 3-star-plus double on the south coast, taxes in. We did not price the west coast, where the luxury resorts are concentrated. The Barbados dollar is pegged to the US dollar, and US dollars are widely accepted. Buses and route taxis keep transport cheap if you stay on the south or west coast; rent a car only for the east coast and the north.
