Curaçao

Southern Caribbean, Dutch Kingdom Nonstop from 6 US airports Passport plus free Dicard

Curaçao is the largest of the ABC islands and the one with the most going on. Willemstad, its capital, is a working port whose pastel waterfront is on the UNESCO World Heritage List. Around the coast sit dozens of small beaches tucked into limestone coves, many with reef a few kicks from the sand.

It is growing fast. The Curaçao Tourist Board counted a record 788,427 stay-over visitors in 2025, up 13% on 2024, plus 881,665 cruise passengers. That is about half Aruba's stay-over count on an island two and a half times the size, so outside Willemstad and the busiest coves it feels noticeably less crowded. Every visitor must fill in the free online Digital Immigration Card, or Dicard, before clearing immigration.

Weather month by month

Best months by our weather score: January, February, March. Daytime highs, rain and sunshine are 2016–2025 averages at Hato International Airport (Open-Meteo historical weather archive); sea temperatures are 2022–2025 averages for the nearest sea area (Open-Meteo marine archive). Months marked in the storm row fall in the Atlantic hurricane season (June 1 to November 30); the score takes that risk into account.

Where Curaçao ranks

Who Curaçao is for, and who should skip it

Curaçao suits couples, snorkelers and divers, and families with teens who like to explore. You get beach days, reef days and city evenings in one trip, with dry weather and a low storm risk.

Skip it if you picture a long, wide beach outside your door. Most good beaches are small coves on the west side; Grote Knip is about 27 miles (44 km) and roughly an hour by road from Willemstad, and many charge an entrance or parking fee because they are privately run. Without a rental car, you will see little beyond your hotel's beach. If walk-out sand matters most, choose Aruba. If diving is the whole point, Bonaire is next door.

Where to stay: Willemstad, Jan Thiel or Westpunt

  • Willemstad (Punda, Otrobanda and Pietermaai) has the most hotels, restaurants and nightlife. Best for a first visit and for couples.
  • Jan Thiel and the southeast coast, east of the city, have resorts, beach clubs and a few calm man-made beaches. Best for families who want a pool-and-beach base.
  • Westpunt and Banda Abou, the far west, are quiet, with cottages and dive lodges close to the best coves. Best for snorkelers who want to swim at dawn.

On Kayak, the cheapest double in a 3-star-or-better hotel in Willemstad was $62 for Wednesday, January 13, 2027, and $62 for Wednesday, July 14, 2027, for two adults with taxes and fees. Both were the same city hotel in Punda, without its own beach. Most other 3-star-plus rooms on the January search ran about $100 to $200.

Beaches: dozens of coves, a car required

Curaçao's beaches face the calm, sheltered southwest. The best known are in the west: Grote Knip (Playa Kenepa Grandi), a white cove under cliffs; Playa Lagun, a narrow inlet where turtles often feed close to shore; Playa Grandi (Playa Piskado), a fishing beach where turtles come in for scraps; and Playa Kalki near Westpunt for snorkeling. Closer to town, Cas Abao and Mambo Beach are developed beach clubs with loungers, bars and calm, shallow water for children.

Expect small beaches, some coral rubble underfoot, and fees at many of the managed ones. The north coast is wild and rocky: look, do not swim. A day trip to Klein Curaçao, an uninhabited islet with a long white beach and a lighthouse, is the classic boat excursion; the crossing can be rough.

Things to do: city, reefs and the wild west

  • Willemstad's historic area, on the UNESCO list since 1997: the Handelskade waterfront, the floating Queen Emma pontoon bridge, the Kura Hulanda museum on slavery and Afro-Caribbean history, and Mikvé Israel-Emanuel, a synagogue with a sand floor.
  • Christoffel National Park in the northwest, with a climb up Mount Christoffel, the island's highest point, best started early before the heat.
  • Shete Boka National Park, where the Atlantic surf blasts into sea caves.
  • Shore diving and snorkeling, including the Tugboat wreck near Caracasbaai, a shallow snorkel that suits beginners.
  • Hato Caves near the airport, and landhuizen, the old plantation houses, some now museums or restaurants.

With a car, that is a full week without repeating yourself, which is why Curaçao outscores its neighbors on things to do.

When to go, and the hurricane question

Like Aruba, Curaçao is dry and breezy. The trade winds blow most of the year, the driest months fall from late winter into spring, and the short rainy season runs from about October to December. The 12-month table on this page has the numbers.

The Atlantic hurricane season runs June 1 to November 30, per the NOAA National Hurricane Center. Curaçao lies south of the main track. In NOAA's HURDAT2 best-track records since 1950, only one hurricane, Felix in 2007, passed with its center within 50 nautical miles (58 miles), and six tropical storms or hurricanes in all came that close. Low risk is not no risk: a passing storm can still bring flooding rain. See our hurricane season guide.

Getting there from the US, and entry rules

Curaçao International Airport (CUR) has nonstops from Atlanta (Delta), Charlotte and Miami (American), New York JFK (JetBlue) and Newark (United) year-round, plus seasonal American flights from Chicago O'Hare, according to the airport's Wikipedia airline table read October 20, 2026. From elsewhere, connect in Miami or Charlotte.

US citizens need a passport valid for the length of the stay. The State Department says no visa is needed for 180 days or less; the tourist board defines a visitor as staying 1 to 90 nights. The Digital Immigration Card is mandatory for every visitor, is filled in online at the official Dicard site and can be completed up to one hour before arrival. Avoid look-alike sites that charge for it. Our passport rules guide has the basics.

What a trip costs

Our Kayak checks found $62 a night in mid-January and $62 in mid-July for the cheapest 3-star-plus double in Willemstad, taxes in. Budget for a rental car, since buses do not reach most beaches conveniently, and for small entry or parking fees at managed beaches. The local currency is the Caribbean guilder (Cg); US dollars are widely accepted. The Central Bank of Curaçao and Sint Maarten listed a selling rate of 1.82 Cg per dollar on October 19, 2026, so prices in guilders run a little under twice the dollar figure.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need a passport for Curaçao?

Yes. Curaçao is a country within the Kingdom of the Netherlands. US citizens need a passport valid for the whole stay and must complete the free online Digital Immigration Card before clearing immigration.

What is the Curaçao Dicard?

The Digital Immigration Card, which replaced the paper ED card, is a mandatory online form for all visitors. You fill it in at the official Dicard website and show the confirmation on arrival. The official form does not list a fee.

Is Curaçao better than Aruba?

For variety, yes: it has a UNESCO-listed capital, more reefs and more national parks. For an easy beach holiday without a car, Aruba is better, because its long beaches sit right in front of the hotels.

Do you need a car in Curaçao?

Usually. The best coves, such as Grote Knip and Playa Lagun, are on the west side, far from Willemstad. Taxis add up quickly, and bus service to the beaches is limited.

Is Curaçao outside the hurricane belt?

Mostly. NOAA's best-track data shows one hurricane center within 50 nautical miles since 1950, Felix in 2007. Tropical storms pass occasionally and can bring heavy rain.
