January is the one month when the weather barely separates Caribbean islands. Every island in our set has a weather score of 9.3 or better except the Bahamas, Cozumel and Roatán. The trade winds blow, rain is light, and the Atlantic hurricane season is two months over. So the ranking below is really a contest of price, crowds and things to do.
That is why the top four sit within a tenth of a point of each other. Curaçao wins because it has the only perfect January weather score of the eight and its cheapest 3-star hotel room cost $62 a night with taxes on January 13, 2027. Jamaica, Puerto Rico and Martinique are close enough that your own priorities should break the tie. The sections after the list explain how.

The ranking
Score = 55% this month's weather + 45% the island's other five factors. How we score
Curaçao wins January with the only perfect weather score in this list: about 1.6 inches of rain for the month, with 84°F (29°C) days and an 81°F (27°C) sea. Its value score is close to perfect: the cheapest 3-star room in Willemstad was $62 with taxes on January 13, 2027. The catch is the beaches. They are small coves on the west side, such as Grote Knip and Playa Lagun, and you need a rental car to reach them. It suits couples, snorkelers and anyone who wants a real city in the evening.
Jamaica is second by 0.07 points. It has the cheapest room in our set, $53 in Montego Bay on January 13, 2027, the most US nonstops after Puerto Rico (24 airports) and plenty of space for 2.6 million stay-over visitors. It loses a little because our page rates it conditional after Hurricane Melissa: seven big Montego Bay resorts reopen only in 2027. Negril's Seven Mile Beach and the Ocho Rios waterfalls are open. Check your hotel on the Tourist Board's reopening list before you book.
Puerto Rico has the highest non-weather score of the eight, thanks to things to do (9 out of 10) and nonstops from 41 US airports. January is dry by its own standards, with 82°F days, and no passport is needed. It finishes third because San Juan's cheapest 3-star room was $120 and Old San Juan fills with cruise passengers in winter. Base yourself in Isla Verde for calm water, and save a day for El Morro ($10 entry) and a bio bay on a moonless night.
Martinique is less crowded than Curaçao, Puerto Rico, Barbados or Antigua, with about 572,000 staying tourists in 2024 on 436 square miles. January is warm and fairly dry at 82°F, with an 82°F sea. Rooms in Les Trois-Îlets started at $102. It slips to fourth on access: the only US nonstop is American from Miami. Come for Grande Anse des Salines, rhum agricole distilleries and the Mount Pelée hike. Bring a card without foreign-transaction fees, since prices are in euros.
Barbados has a near-perfect January weather score and calm west-coast water at Mullins Bay and Carlisle Bay. It also has nonstops from eight US airports, none marked seasonal. What holds it to fifth is the bill: the cheapest 3-star room on the south coast was $140, the highest in this top eight, and the island is busy, with 707,046 stay-overs plus a heavy cruise schedule in 2025. Go for the Oistins Friday Fish Fry, Harrison's Cave and an easy, English-speaking week.
Antigua has the best beaches in this list, 9 out of 10, and one of its driest months, with about 1.7 inches of rain. Dickenson Bay, Darkwood and Pigeon Point are calm and swimmable. It ranks sixth because the value score uses the $99 town hotel, while beach-strip rooms started at $222 in January. Things to do also score lower than on the bigger islands. Note that JetBlue's New York JFK route is listed as ending October 31, 2026; American keeps JFK.
Grenada is the quiet pick: about 186,000 stay-over visitors in 2025, the long, calm sand of Grand Anse, and rooms from $96 in the southwest. January is dry and 82°F, with an 82°F sea. It ranks seventh because only four US airports fly nonstop and its things-to-do score trails the bigger islands, though the Underwater Sculpture Park and Grand Etang rainforest are real draws. Since March 2, 2026, you fill in an online E/D card before arrival.
St. Thomas completes the list as the easy no-passport option. Its January is the driest here, about 1.3 inches, though days are cooler at 79°F. The cheapest 3-star room in Charlotte Amalie was $93 on January 13, 2027, and 16 US airports fly nonstop. It ranks last of the eight on things to do (6.5), since much of the best snorkeling is a 15-minute ferry away on St. John. Expect crowds at Magens Bay on cruise days, and carry proof of citizenship for the flight home.
Each island's January score is 55% January weather and 45% everything else. The weather part blends the daytime high, sea temperature, rainfall and sunshine for January from our climate dataset. The other part blends our editors' beach and things-to-do scores with three data scores: getting there from the US, hotel value and crowding. An island whose own page carries a "conditional" verdict gives up a little, which is why Jamaica sits second. The full method, with weights, is in how we score islands.
Because January weather scores sit between 9.6 and 10 for all eight islands here, the non-weather half did nearly all the sorting this month.
What a January night costs, island by island
Mid-January is high season, and the spread between islands is enormous. These are the cheapest double rooms in a 3-star-or-better hotel for two adults on Wednesday, January 13, 2027, taxes in, from the searches on each island page:

Read the cheapest rows with care. Jamaica's $53 was a small guesthouse-style property, and Curaçao's $62 was a city hotel in Punda with no beach. In Antigua, the cheapest room on the Dickenson Bay beach strip was $222, not $99. These are floors, not what a beachfront week costs.
Why Aruba, Grand Cayman and Turks and Caicos are not in the top eight
All three have near-perfect January weather. Aruba scores a full 10 for the month and finishes 10th, just 0.4 behind the leader. It loses on value ($203 a night) and crowding: 1.5 million stay-over visitors in 2025 on an island of 69 square miles. Grand Cayman and Turks and Caicos lose more heavily on price. If you want walk-out sand and do not mind the bill, all three remain good January choices.
The Bahamas slip for a different reason. Nassau's January weather score is 8.3 and Exuma's is 8.7, because the islands lie far enough north that January days are noticeably cooler and the sea is a few degrees below the southern Caribbean.
Which island to pick if the winner is wrong for you
Pick Puerto Rico over Curaçao if you have no passport, want the most flight choices, or want a week of variety: forts, rainforest and bioluminescent bays. Pick Martinique if food and hiking matter more than English signage. Pick Antigua or Barbados if the beach outside your room is the priority; their editors' beach scores (9 and 8.5) are the highest of the eight. Pick Jamaica for an all-inclusive with day trips outside the gate, but only once you have checked that your resort is open.
January also brings winter swell to north-facing coasts. Rincon on Puerto Rico is a surf coast in winter; families should swim on sheltered beaches such as Isla Verde or Luquillo.
Jamaica in January, after Hurricane Melissa
Melissa struck western Jamaica in late October 2025. The Jamaica Tourist Board says all three international airports and the cruise ports are operating, and most big attractions are open. Its reopening list still shows seven large Montego Bay all-inclusives returning only in 2027. Sandals South Coast is due back on November 18, 2026, Bahia Principe Grand Jamaica on December 1, 2026, and two Sandals properties in Montego Bay on December 18, 2026. For a January trip, Negril and Ocho Rios are the safer bases. Read our Jamaica page for the full list.
Passports, entry forms and flights for January
Puerto Rico and St. Thomas need no passport, but you need a REAL ID-compliant license or a passport to fly. TSA charges a $45 ConfirmID fee to travelers without acceptable ID. Every other island here needs a passport and, in most cases, an online arrival form: Curaçao's free Digital Immigration Card, Jamaica's C5, Barbados's Immigration and Customs Form, Antigua's ArriveAntigua and Grenada's online E/D card. Our passport rules guide covers the rest.
Two winter flight changes matter. Spirit Airlines shut down on May 2, 2026, so the cheapest Florida links to St. Thomas are gone. Breeze begins Tampa to Montego Bay on December 19, 2026 and Tampa to St. Thomas on December 16, 2026.
Booking through these links supports this site at no cost to you. Prices move by date, so we do not print them here; the official prices we checked are in the page above.
