St. Lucia
St. Lucia's picture is the Pitons: two forested volcanic spires rising straight out of the sea near Soufrière, protected as a UNESCO World Heritage site since 2004. Around them are rainforest, waterfalls, sulphur vents and steep bays. It is one of the most dramatic islands in the Caribbean, and its hotels are built to look at the view.
Two things to know before you book. The beaches are pleasant but rarely great, and many are dark sand or small coves. And the international airport, Hewanorra (UVF), is at the island's southern tip, about 41 miles (66 km) by road from Rodney Bay, where most mid-range hotels are. St. Lucia's Central Statistical Office counted 426,676 stay-over arrivals in 2025, slightly down from 435,659 in 2024, and 668,086 cruise passengers.

Weather month by month
Best months by our weather score: February, March, April. Daytime highs, rain and sunshine are 2016–2025 averages at Hewanorra International Airport (Open-Meteo historical weather archive); sea temperatures are 2022–2025 averages for the nearest sea area (Open-Meteo marine archive). Months marked in the storm row fall in the Atlantic hurricane season (June 1 to November 30); the score takes that risk into account.

Where St. Lucia ranks
Who St. Lucia is for, and who should skip it
St. Lucia is a couples island first: hillside suites with plunge pools, Piton views and sunset dinners. It also suits active travelers and teens who want to climb Gros Piton, swim under a waterfall and snorkel off a volcanic headland.
Skip it if the beach is the main event, or if you hate long transfers. Families with small children will find calmer, sandier water in Barbados, a short flight away, or Aruba. For similar scenery with French food and lower peak prices, compare Martinique to the north.
Where to stay: Rodney Bay or Soufrière
- Rodney Bay and Gros Islet in the north have the most hotels, restaurants and the island's best everyday beach, Reduit. Best for value and families.
- Soufrière on the southwest coast is where the Pitons are, with boutique hotels and resorts on steep hillsides. Best for couples and scenery.
- Marigot Bay, between the two, is a sheltered yacht harbor with a few upscale hotels.
On Kayak, the cheapest double in a 3-star-or-better hotel in Rodney Bay was $81 for Wednesday, January 13, 2027, and $99 for Wednesday, July 14, 2027, for two adults; Kayak showed no separate tax line for that aparthotel, and the next cheapest, Bay Gardens Hotel, was $128 and $127 with taxes. We did not price Soufrière, where most hotels are small hillside view properties.
Beaches: pleasant, not the reason to come
Reduit Beach in Rodney Bay is the island's most popular: a long stretch of golden sand with calm water and water sports. Pigeon Island, at the end of the causeway, has two small beaches inside a national park. Near Soufrière, Anse Chastanet has dark sand and some of the best snorkeling from shore, and Sugar Beach (Anse des Pitons) sits between the two peaks, with imported pale sand and calm water.
Anse Cochon and Marigot Bay are best reached by boat. The Atlantic east coast is rough, and beaches there are for walking. St. Lucia scores lower on beaches than its neighbors because there are few long, swimmable, pale-sand beaches near the hotels, not because the water is poor.
Things to do: the Pitons, volcano and rainforest
- Climb Gros Piton, the taller of the two spires and the one most visitors hike with a required local guide. It is steep and takes most of a morning.
- Sulphur Springs near Soufrière, billed as a drive-in volcano, with steaming vents and mud baths.
- Diamond Falls and Botanical Gardens, and the Toraille waterfall, both near Soufrière.
- Rainforest: trails, zip lines and aerial trams in the forest reserve inland.
- Pigeon Island National Landmark, with fort ruins and views over Rodney Bay, and the Gros Islet Friday street party.
- Boat days down the west coast from Rodney Bay or Marigot to Soufrière, with snorkel stops.
That is a full and varied week, which is why St. Lucia scores high on things to do. Plan the Soufrière sights as one or two long days if you stay in the north: the coast road south from Castries is slow and winding, and a boat down the west coast is often the more pleasant way to reach the Pitons.
Getting there: Hewanorra or George F. L. Charles?
Every US nonstop lands at Hewanorra International (UVF) near Vieux Fort. According to the airport's Wikipedia airline table, read October 20, 2026, flights run year-round from Atlanta (Delta), Charlotte and Miami (American) and New York JFK (JetBlue), with seasonal service from Boston (JetBlue), Chicago O'Hare and Newark (United) and Philadelphia (American).
George F. L. Charles Airport (SLU), on the edge of Castries, is close to the north-coast hotels but has no scheduled jet service: only regional turboprops from Barbados, Martinique, Antigua, St. Vincent and other nearby islands. Flying via Barbados to SLU can save the drive, at the cost of a second flight.
From UVF, the road to Rodney Bay is about 41 miles (66 km) on winding roads through Castries; OSRM routing puts it at about 76 minutes before traffic, and Castries traffic often adds more. To Soufrière it is about 20 miles (32 km), roughly 48 minutes. Plan for a long first evening if you stay in the north. Many resorts arrange transfers, and some travelers pay for a helicopter hop to skip the road; agree any taxi fare before you set off.
When to go, entry rules and cost
The dry season runs from about December to May; rain increases from June and peaks in the fall, and the mountains are wetter than the coast all year. The 12-month table on this page has the numbers. The Atlantic hurricane season runs June 1 to November 30, per the NOAA National Hurricane Center. In NOAA's HURDAT2 best-track records since 1950, six hurricanes passed with their center within 50 nautical miles (58 miles) of St. Lucia, including Allen in 1980, Tomas in 2010 and Elsa in 2021. See our hurricane season guide.
US citizens need a passport valid for the stay and no visa, but you must show an onward ticket and complete the mandatory online entry form, submitted no more than three days before travel; you receive a QR code to show on arrival. See our passport rules guide. Departure tax is included in airfares.
Our Kayak checks found $81 a night in mid-January and $99 in mid-July for the cheapest 3-star-plus double in Rodney Bay; confirm taxes at booking. Add the airport transfer; the currency is the Eastern Caribbean dollar, pegged to the US dollar, and US dollars are widely accepted.
