The best Caribbean island to visit in May

Ranked for May 24 Caribbean islands scored #1: Curaçao, 9.05 for May

May is the Caribbean's shoulder month. The winter crowds are gone, the sea is warmer than at any point since November, and the Atlantic hurricane season does not open until June 1. For travelers who can choose their dates, it is one of the best-value months of the year.

The ranking reshuffles. Curaçao takes first back from Jamaica, which drops to tenth because its May rain, about 4.0 inches in our data, is double what most islands on this list get. St. Martin, in the dry northeast Caribbean, enters at seventh. And the ABC islands start to feel hot: Curaçao's typical May high is 87°F (31°C).

Curaçao

9.1/10
87°F high 82°F sea 1.1 in rain

Curaçao returns to first in May with a perfect weather score and about 1.1 inches of rain, one of the three driest months of its year. Days are hot at 87°F (31°C), with an 82°F (28°C) sea. Its value score barely moves through the year, since the cheapest Willemstad room was $62 in both January and July. Go for the west-coast coves at Grote Knip and Playa Kalki, and start the Mount Christoffel climb at dawn. The catch is unchanged: you need a car, and the beaches are coves, not long strands.

86°F high 83°F sea 2.4 in rain

Martinique is second, with 86°F days, an 83°F sea and a weather score of 9.8 as the dry season tails off. Its year-round profile is among the strongest here: things to do score 8.5, and it is less crowded than most rivals, with about 572,000 staying tourists in 2024. Rooms in Les Trois-Îlets were $82 in our July check. It loses ground on access, with a single US nonstop from Miami. May is a good month for the rum estates and the botanical garden at Balata.

Barbados

8.9/10
85°F high 84°F sea 2.5 in rain

Barbados has the warmest sea on this list in May, 84°F, with 85°F days and about 2.5 inches of rain. Its beaches score 8.5, and the west coast stays flat for swimming and turtle snorkeling in Carlisle Bay. It ranks third because rooms are mid-priced, $92 to $140 on our two dates, and the island is busy for its size. May is shoulder season here, so south-coast rates should be closer to the July figure. Nonstops run from eight US airports, none of them seasonal.

Grenada

8.8/10
85°F high 83°F sea 2.3 in rain

Grenada climbs to fourth with a 9.9 weather score, 85°F days and about 2.3 inches of rain, before its rainy season starts in June. It has the fewest visitors in this top eight, about 186,000 stay-overs in 2025. Rooms in the southwest cost $96 to $100 on our dates. It ranks below the top three because only four US airports fly nonstop. Combine Grand Anse with a dive on the Bianca C wreck or the Underwater Sculpture Park.

Puerto Rico slips to fifth because May is its wettest month on this list, about 3.8 inches, for a weather score of 9.2. Everything else is strong: things to do score 9, San Juan has nonstops from 41 US airports, and no passport is needed. Old San Juan's cruise traffic eases after the winter peak. Plan El Yunque and the beaches for mornings. The bio bays at Fajardo, Vieques and La Parguera work in any season; book a moonless night.

Antigua

8.8/10
84°F high 83°F sea 2.6 in rain

Antigua ties Puerto Rico on 8.75, with a 9.7 weather score, 84°F days and about 2.6 inches of rain. Its beach score of 9 is still the best on the page, and May is the shoulder season our Antigua page recommends: warm sea, fewer people. It ranks sixth on things to do (7) and value: in July, its cheapest town room was $155, dearer than January's $99. Dickenson Bay and Pigeon Point are the calm beaches for children.

St. Martin enters the list in May with a 9.9 weather score and the mildest days here, 81°F, with an 83°F sea and about 2.1 inches of rain. It has nonstops from 13 US airports, and its beaches and things to do both score 8: Orient Bay, Mullet Bay, Grand Case restaurants and ferry day trips to Anguilla. It ranks seventh because its crowd score is the lowest in our Caribbean data, with about 1.6 million cruise passengers in 2025. Simpson Bay rooms were $111 in our July check.

St. Lucia

8.7/10
85°F high 83°F sea 2.8 in rain

St. Lucia holds on at eighth with a 9.6 weather score, 85°F days and about 2.8 inches of rain, the wettest of the eight after Puerto Rico. Rain falls heavier in the mountains than on the coast, so do the Gros Piton climb early in the month if you can. Its things to do, 8.5, match the best here. Its beaches, 6.5, are the weakest. Rodney Bay rooms were $99 in our July check. Couples who come for the Piton views will not mind the beaches.

How the May ranking works

Fifty-five percent of each island's score is May weather, built from the daytime high, sea temperature, rain and sunshine. The other 45% is the same for every month: our editors' scores for beaches and things to do, plus access from four US hubs, the hotel prices we checked and visitor density. A conditional verdict on the island's own page costs 0.4 points on that second part. The method is set out in how we score islands.

Why Jamaica falls from first to tenth

Jamaica led February, March and April. In May its weather score drops to 9.1, because our dataset puts Montego Bay's May rain at about 4.0 inches, against 1.1 to 2.8 inches across the eight islands here. Jamaica's other strengths do not change, so it still scores 8.65 for May, only 0.01 behind eighth place. It remains a sound May trip; just expect afternoon downpours.

Puerto Rico shows the same pattern more mildly. At about 3.8 inches it is the wettest island in the top eight, and its weather score of 9.2 keeps it fifth despite having the most to do of any island on the list.

May favors the dry corners of the Caribbean

Two areas stay driest in May. The first is the ABC islands off Venezuela: Curaçao gets about 1.1 inches and Aruba about 0.9. The second is the small northeast islands: St. Martin gets about 2.1 inches, and Anguilla and St. Barts are similar. St. Martin is the only one of those northern islands in the top eight, because Anguilla and St. Barts lose heavily on hotel prices.

Heat is the trade-off in the south. May highs reach 87°F on Curaçao and 85°F on Barbados, Grenada and St. Lucia, while St. Martin stays at 81°F. If you dislike heat, the northern islands are more comfortable this month.

Shoulder-season prices: what our data can and cannot tell you

We priced two dates per island: January 13 and July 14, 2027. May falls between them. On most islands, the July rate was lower: Barbados $92 against $140, St. Martin $111 against $134, Martinique $82 against $102 and Aruba $173 against $203. Curaçao was $62 on both dates. Antigua is the exception; its cheapest town room was $155 in July against $99 in January. Use those two figures as brackets, and expect May to land closer to July on most islands.

Memorial Day falls on May 31, 2027. The holiday weekend is the one busy patch in an otherwise quiet month, particularly on islands with many short US flights such as Puerto Rico and St. Martin.

The last month before hurricane season

The NOAA National Hurricane Center gives the Atlantic season as June 1 to November 30, with the peak on September 10. May therefore carries no storm penalty in our scores. If you are deciding between late May and June, our June ranking shows how the order changes once the season opens, and the hurricane and cyclone seasons guide explains the risk month by month.
