Kauai
Kauai is the oldest and greenest of the main Hawaiian islands. It has the Na Pali Coast, a wall of fluted cliffs with no road along it, and Waimea Canyon, a red-walled gorge on the dry west side. It drew 1,407,632 air visitors in 2025, according to the state's Annual Visitor Research Report, about half of Maui's count. There are no high-rise resort strips.
The news for anyone booking now is Hurricane Lowell. It passed over Niihau and Kauai on September 7 and 8, 2026, the first direct hurricane hit on Kauai since Iniki in 1992. Storm surge damaged parts of Poipu and Kekaha, Port Allen Boat Harbor and Waimea Pier, and the governor's early damage estimate topped $400 million. On October 19, 2026, the state parks division still listed Koke'e Road as closed until further notice, all Kauai camping closed and every Kauai state park closed except Haena State Park and part of Wailua River State Park.

Weather month by month
Best months by our weather score: June, October, November. Daytime highs, rain and sunshine are 2016–2025 averages at Lihue Airport (Open-Meteo historical weather archive); sea temperatures are 2022–2025 averages for the nearest sea area (Open-Meteo marine archive). Months marked in the storm row fall in the Central Pacific hurricane season (June 1 to November 30); the score takes that risk into account.

Where Kauai ranks
Who Kauai suits, and who should wait
Kauai suits couples, hikers and repeat Hawaii visitors who want scenery over shopping. It is quieter than Oahu and less polished than Maui. You need a rental car, and the island has one main road that does not loop all the way round, because the Na Pali cliffs block it.
Wait, or pick another island, if your trip is built around Waimea Canyon, Koke'e or Polihale, all closed on October 19, 2026. First-time visitors who want an easy all-rounder are better served by Maui; budget travelers by Oahu. Our Hawaiian island ranking compares all six.
Where to stay: Kapaa, Poipu or Princeville
- Kapaa and the Coconut Coast on the east side are the central, mid-priced base, close to the airport. On Kayak, the cheapest 3-star-or-better hotel was The Iso at $233 for January 13, 2027 and Aston Islander On The Beach at $236 for July 14, 2027, one night for two adults, taxes and fees in.
- Poipu on the south shore is sunnier and has the best family beaches, but it took the storm surge. The cheapest 3-star-or-better hotel was $484 for January 13, 2027 (Sheraton Kauai Resort Villas) and $555 for July 14, 2027 (Ko'a Kea Resort). The Sheraton Kauai Resort was among the properties reported hit hardest by Lowell, so confirm your hotel is operating.
- Princeville and Hanalei on the north shore are the closest base for Haena and the Na Pali trailhead; rooms there are mostly condos and expensive.
Beaches: summer north, winter south
Kauai's beaches swap seasons. In summer, Hanalei Bay and Ke'e Beach at Haena are often calm enough to swim and snorkel; in winter, both take big surf. Anini Beach, behind a long reef, is the calmest north-shore option most of the year.
The south shore is the winter choice. Poipu Beach Park has a sandbar and a shallow, rock-sheltered area that families use, and Hawaiian monk seals sometimes rest on the sand. On the east side, Lydgate Beach Park in Wailua has rock-walled ponds where small children can paddle. Polihale, the long west-side beach, was closed after Lowell. Kauai also has strong currents at unguarded beaches; swim where there is a lifeguard tower.
Things to do, and what is closed
- Haena State Park and the Kalalau Trail: reopened October 15, 2026. Non-residents need a reservation; entry is $5 per person and parking $10.
- Na Pali Coast: seen from a boat or a helicopter. Many boat tours used Port Allen, which Lowell damaged extensively, so ask your operator where it now departs.
- Waimea Canyon and Koke'e: normally $5 per person plus $10 parking for non-residents. Koke'e Road was closed until further notice on October 19, 2026.
- Wailua River: river and landing access reopened September 21, 2026, but individual kayakers cannot go to Fern Grotto and the trail to Uluwehi (Secret) Falls stays closed.
- Whale watching: NOAA's humpback sanctuary says whales are seen from November through April.
In a normal year we score Kauai higher for things to do. With the west side shut, we score it 7 of 10 for now and will revisit when the state reopens Koke'e Road.
When to go, and the storm season
Kauai's north shore and mountains are among the wettest places in Hawaii, and showers are part of every season; the climate table on this page has the numbers. Summer is best for the north shore. Winter is whale season and the time for Poipu.
The Central Pacific hurricane season runs June 1 to November 30, per NOAA's National Hurricane Center. Kauai has now had two direct hits in living memory: Iniki in 1992 and Lowell in 2026. Buy travel insurance with hurricane cover for August to October trips. Our hurricane season guide explains the risk by month.
Getting there from the US
Lihue Airport (LIH) has nonstops from 11 US airports: Denver, Las Vegas, Los Angeles, Oakland, Phoenix, Portland, Sacramento, San Diego, San Francisco, San Jose and Seattle. From the East Coast, connect in one of those or in Honolulu, which has frequent flights to Lihue. Lihue Airport closed before Lowell and reopened on September 8, 2026.
It is a domestic flight: a REAL ID-compliant license or a passport is enough, and TSA charges $45 for its ConfirmID process if you arrive without acceptable ID.
What a trip costs
Kapaa hotels came in at $233 to $236 on our two dates; Poipu at $484 to $555. Since January 1, 2026, the state Transient Accommodations Tax is 11%, up from 10.25%, under the Act 96 green fee. County lodging tax and general excise tax come on top, and Kayak's totals include them. Add a rental car and state park fees.
Tickets and tours you can book

Kauai: Na Pali Raft Snorkel Adventure
A meal, snorkel gear and gratuities are listed as included. Rafts are bumpy and wet, which is the trade-off for getting closer to the sea caves than the big catamarans.
Rating as shown on Viator

Kauai: Secret Falls Kayak and Hike
Kayak gear and a guide are included; the listing contradicts itself on lunch, so pack your own food and closed-toe water shoes. You need reasonable fitness for the paddle plus a muddy hike.
Rating as shown on Viator

Kauai: Air Tour of Na Pali Coast, Entire Island of Kauai
Landing fee, fuel surcharge and taxes are included, tips are not. A fixed-wing plane costs well under most helicopter flights, but it cannot hover or drop into valleys the way a helicopter can.

Frequently asked questions
Is Kauai open to tourists after Hurricane Lowell?
Yes. The airport reopened on September 8, 2026, and Kayak lists bookable hotels for 2027, but on October 19, 2026 Koke'e Road and most Kauai state parks were still closed. Haena State Park reopened on October 15. Check the state parks division's notices before you go.
Can you drive to Waimea Canyon right now?
Not along Koke'e Road, which the state listed as closed until further notice on October 19, 2026. When it reopens, non-residents pay $5 each plus $10 parking.
Do I need a reservation for Haena State Park?
Yes, if you are not a Hawaii resident. Entry is $5 per person and parking $10, and daily limits apply. The park and the Kalalau trailhead reopened on October 15, 2026.
Which side of Kauai is best in winter?
The south side around Poipu. North-shore beaches such as Hanalei Bay and Ke'e get big winter surf, while Poipu is sunnier and calmer. Check that your Poipu hotel has recovered from the September 2026 storm surge.
Can I fly my dog straight to Lihue?
Only with planning. Hawaii is rabies-free, so your dog needs two rabies vaccinations, a microchip and a passing FAVN blood test at least 30 days before arrival. To be released at Lihue rather than Honolulu, you also need a $165 Neighbor Island Inspection Permit, a booked inspection with an approved Kauai vet and documents at the state's Animal Quarantine Station 30 or more days ahead. Miss a step and the dog can face up to 120 days of quarantine. See islands to visit with a dog.
How many US cities fly nonstop to Kauai?
Eleven: Denver, Las Vegas, Los Angeles, Oakland, Phoenix, Portland, Sacramento, San Diego, San Francisco, San Jose and Seattle, on Alaska, American, Delta, Hawaiian, Southwest and United.
