Lanai
Lanai is the smallest inhabited Hawaiian island most visitors can reach. It has one town, Lanai City, built for a pineapple plantation, a few paved roads and a lot of red dirt tracks. Almost all visitor lodging is two resorts. The state's 2025 Annual Visitor Research Report counted only 32,911 air visitors on Lanai, down 27.6% on 2024; just 8,212 of them visited no other island.
The price tells you who it is for. On Kayak, the only hotel rated 3 stars or better with a rate was the Four Seasons Resort Lanai at Manele Bay: $2,642 for Wednesday, January 13, 2027 and $1,959 for Wednesday, July 14, 2027, one night for two adults, taxes and fees in. Hotel Lanai in town, rated 2 stars, was $423 on the January date. For everyone else, Lanai is a day trip: the Expeditions ferry crosses from Maalaea on Maui three times a day, in about an hour and ten minutes.

Weather month by month
Best months by our weather score: June, July, August. Daytime highs, rain and sunshine are 2016–2025 averages at Lanai Airport (Open-Meteo historical weather archive); sea temperatures are 2022–2025 averages for the nearest sea area (Open-Meteo marine archive). Months marked in the storm row fall in the Central Pacific hurricane season (June 1 to November 30); the score takes that risk into account.

Lanai has no neighbor-island inspection: the dog must clear at Honolulu (or Kahului, Kona or Lihue with a $165 permit) before the inter-island hop.

Where Lanai ranks
Who Lanai suits, and who should skip it
Lanai suits couples who want privacy and a resort that does everything, and travelers on Maui who want a calmer snorkel day than the Molokini boats. It is one of the quietest places in Hawaii to spend a few nights.
Skip it as a base if you want variety. There is one great beach for swimming and few restaurants outside the resorts. Families get more for their money on Maui or Oahu. For a honeymoon comparison across the islands, see the best Hawaiian island for a honeymoon.
Where to stay: Manele Bay or Lanai City
- Manele Bay: the Four Seasons sits above Hulopoe Bay on the south coast. At $1,959 to $2,642 a night on our dates, it was the cheapest 3-star-or-better hotel Kayak could price.
- Lanai City: the upland town has Hotel Lanai (2 stars, $423 on January 13, 2027) and a handful of rentals. Sensei Lanai, the island's second Four Seasons property, appeared on Kayak with no rate for our dates.
Lanai City is cooler and inland, so you drive down to the beach. You will want a rental, ideally a 4WD if you plan to leave the paved roads.
Beaches: one excellent bay, the rest for looking
Hulopoe Bay is the reason to come. It is a sandy crescent below the Four Seasons with clear, usually calm water and rocky points that are good for snorkeling. It is public; ferry day-trippers walk there from Manele Harbor next door. On calm days it is fine for children with supervision.
Shipwreck Beach on the north shore is a long, windswept strand with a rusting ship stuck on the reef. It is for walking, not swimming. Polihua Beach in the northwest is remote and exposed to currents. That is why we score Lanai's beaches 6 of 10: one top-quality bay, little else.
Things to do
- Keahiakawelo, the Garden of the Gods: a field of red and ochre boulders reached on a dirt road.
- Lanai City: Dole Park, the square at the center of town, with small shops and cafes.
- Snorkeling and dolphin spotting at Hulopoe and Manele.
- Whale watching in the channel toward Maui; NOAA's humpback sanctuary says whales are seen from November through April.
- Golf and spa days at the resort.
That is the list. Two or three days covers it, which is why we score things to do 5 of 10.
A day trip from Maui, step by step
The ferry timetable makes a full day easy. Take the 6:30 a.m. boat from Maalaea, the harbor between Kihei and Wailuku, and you land at Manele in time for a morning swim at Hulopoe before the wind picks up. Watch the channel on the way: in winter, this is prime whale water.
Spend the morning in the bay, then head up to Lanai City for lunch and a look at Keahiakawelo if you have arranged a vehicle or a tour in advance. Be back at Manele for the 5:30 p.m. return, or the 1 p.m. boat if the sea is building. Book both legs ahead in winter, when crossings can be rough. You need no resort booking to use the beach, which is open to the public.
When to go
Lanai sits in the rain shadow of Maui's mountains and is dry most of the year; the table on this page has the numbers. Winter is whale season and the ferry crossing can be rough. Summer seas are calmer for snorkeling, and the Four Seasons was $683 cheaper on our July date than on our January one.
The Central Pacific hurricane season runs June 1 to November 30, per NOAA's National Hurricane Center. In September 2026, storm surge from Hurricane Lowell pulled shipping containers into the sea at Kaumalapau Harbor, Lanai's only commercial harbor, and damaged its seawall. That harbor handles cargo, not the passenger ferry. See our hurricane season guide.
Getting there: plane or ferry
There are no flights from the US mainland. You connect in Honolulu or Kahului. Mokulele Airlines holds the federal Essential Air Service contract for Lanai, worth $19.4 million through August 2030, and flies 42 weekly round trips to Honolulu and 21 to Kahului. Lanai Air also flies to Honolulu.
The Expeditions ferry leaves Maalaea Harbor on Maui at 6:30 a.m., 11 a.m. and 3:30 p.m., and returns from Manele at 8:30 a.m., 1 p.m. and 5:30 p.m.; fares on the operator's site start at $30. The ferry uses Maalaea, not Lahaina. Maui County plans to take over the service with a county-run ferry from mid-2027. It is all domestic travel, so a REAL ID or passport covers the flights.
What a trip costs
Lanai is the most expensive island in our Hawaii set: $1,959 to $2,642 a night at the cheapest 3-star-or-better hotel on our dates. Since January 1, 2026, the state Transient Accommodations Tax is 11%, up from 10.25%, under the Act 96 green fee, with county tax and general excise tax on top; Kayak's totals include them. A ferry day trip from Maui costs a fraction of a night here.

Frequently asked questions
How do you get to Lanai from Maui?
By the Expeditions ferry from Maalaea Harbor, three round trips a day, about an hour and ten minutes each way, with fares from $30 on the operator's site. Mokulele Airlines also flies from Kahului.
Is Lanai worth a day trip?
Yes, on a calm day. Take the early ferry, snorkel at Hulopoe Bay next to the harbor, and either rent a vehicle or book a tour for Keahiakawelo and Lanai City before the afternoon boat.
Are there flights from the mainland to Lanai?
No. You fly to Honolulu or Kahului and connect on Mokulele Airlines or Lanai Air. Lanai Airport has no jet service from the mainland.
Can I bring my dog to Lanai?
It is hard. Lanai has no neighbor-island inspection, so a dog must first clear Hawaii's rabies rules in Honolulu, or at Kahului with a $165 permit, then fly on. Plan months ahead; see islands to visit with a dog.
Is Lanai good for a honeymoon?
If the budget allows. It is quiet, private and the resort is set on the island's best beach, but the cheapest night we found was $1,959. Maui's Wailea offers similar beach resorts for less.
